The safest setup depends on what is providing WebDAV. For a plain file repository, run Apache with mod_dav and mod_dav_fs, authenticate every DAV location, and give Apache’s configured User/Group write access to a dedicated directory. For Nextcloud, do the opposite: leave Apache’s WebDAV module disabled for the Nextcloud tree because Nextcloud serves WebDAV through its built-in SabreDAV service. In both designs, use HTTPS, restrict each account to its intended folder, protect credentials, and test uploads, renames, downloads, and deletes before allowing internet access.

Choose the right WebDAV design
WebDAV is an extension to HTTP that adds remote file operations such as listing, creating, moving, renaming, and deleting files. It is a protocol, not a special disk or hardware appliance. A Linux VPS can expose a directory directly through Apache, or an application such as Nextcloud can provide WebDAV together with accounts, sharing, and synchronization.

| Decision point | Standalone Apache repository | Nextcloud |
|---|---|---|
| Authorization owner | Apache authentication and authorization rules, such as an htpasswd file, Digest Authentication, or another configured provider |
Nextcloud accounts, shares, groups, and application passwords |
| Filesystem identity | Apache’s configured runtime User and Group |
Nextcloud’s application and data-directory ownership model |
| Client URL | A path chosen by the Apache administrator | https://cloud.example.com/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/, with the installation subdirectory included when applicable |
| Operational scope | Small, focused file repository with few moving parts | File sync, sharing, account controls, and application-level administration |
| Maintenance | Apache modules, TLS, authentication files, and filesystem permissions | Nextcloud updates, PHP runtime, database, web-server configuration, and application settings |
Use the Apache path when you need a narrow repository and are comfortable administering web-server authorization. Use Nextcloud when users need an account-based file service rather than a single HTTP directory. Do not layer Apache WebDAV on top of a Nextcloud data directory.
Prerequisites and an access plan
- A Linux VPS with administrative access. A public DNS name is needed if clients will connect from the internet.
- Apache HTTP Server for a standalone repository, or an already installed Nextcloud instance for the application path.
- A dedicated DAV directory that is separate from executable application code and, for Nextcloud, separate from the Nextcloud data tree.
- A written mapping of users to folders, for example
aliceto/srv/webdav/aliceandbobto/srv/webdav/bob. - HTTPS before sending passwords across an untrusted network. Apache documents Digest Authentication as an option and Basic Authentication over SSL as an alternative.
- A test account and a client:
davfs2, a desktop file manager, a script using cURL, or the official Nextcloud client where appropriate.
Decide first whether authorization is enforced by Apache or by Nextcloud. Do not create a second, conflicting authentication layer without checking how it interacts with the DAV service. In particular, Nextcloud warns that parent-directory authentication rules can interfere with its own Basic authentication.

Standalone Apache WebDAV: complete setup
1. Install and enable the required modules
Package names and module commands differ between distributions. Enable Apache’s DAV core and filesystem provider, plus the authentication and TLS modules required by your policy. On Debian- or Ubuntu-style systems, administrators commonly use the distribution’s Apache module helper to enable dav, dav_fs, the selected authentication modules, and TLS; other distributions use their package manager and configuration layout. Verify the active module list instead of assuming a command succeeded.
Do not enable DAV globally when only one repository needs it. A narrowly scoped location reduces the chance that an unrelated directory becomes writable over HTTP.

2. Create a dedicated repository
Create a path intended solely for DAV content, such as /srv/webdav. Keep it outside the document root when possible, and never place application source, shell scripts, private keys, or configuration files beneath a writable DAV location.
Apache describes a DAV repository as private to Apache’s runtime process. Editing files inside it manually as another account can leave ownership, locks, or metadata inconsistent with the service. If administrators must manipulate content outside DAV, define a controlled operational procedure and preserve the ownership and group permissions Apache requires.
3. Plan service-account ownership
Find the Apache service identity in the active configuration’s User and Group directives. Depending on the distribution, the names may be different. Grant that identity only the read, write, and directory-traverse permissions needed for the repository:

- The repository directory must be traversable by Apache.
- Directories and files managed by DAV must be writable by Apache when clients create, rename, replace, or delete them.
- Parent directories should not be broadly writable by unrelated system users.
- Backups and administrator tools must account for files created with Apache’s identity.
Every file created through DAV inherits the Apache runtime identity rather than the authenticated username. Apache authentication answers “which web user is allowed?”; it does not make the kernel see that person as the owner of each file. This distinction is central to a workable per-user design.

For separate private folders, create one filesystem directory and one URL location per user, then authorize the matching account in that location. A conceptual Apache configuration looks like this:
Alias /dav/alice /srv/webdav/alice
<Directory /srv/webdav/alice>
Dav On
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Private WebDAV"
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/webdav-users
Require user alice
</Directory>
Alias /dav/bob /srv/webdav/bob
<Directory /srv/webdav/bob>
Dav On
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Private WebDAV"
AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/webdav-users
Require user bob
</Directory>
The exact directives and file paths depend on the distribution and the rest of the virtual-host configuration. The important properties are that Dav On applies only to the intended directory, authentication is mandatory, and Require user (or an equivalent authorization rule) prevents one account from entering another account’s location. Put these directives in the TLS virtual host or otherwise ensure that Basic credentials are sent only over HTTPS.
If several users intentionally share a repository, authorize a group instead of individual names and document that the folder is shared. Do not assume filesystem ownership will provide per-user isolation: Apache still performs all writes as its service account, so the authorization boundary is the web-server policy.
5. Create and protect the authentication database
Use the authentication mechanism supported by your policy. With a password-file design, create the file outside the served tree and add users with the platform’s Apache password utility. Keep it readable by Apache but not downloadable by clients. Digest Authentication is another documented option. Whichever method you choose, do not publish an unauthenticated DAV endpoint: Apache explicitly warns that enabling WebDAV before securing the server allows everyone to distribute files on it.

Limit accounts to the locations they need. A maintenance account that can reach every repository should be treated as an administrative credential, not handed to ordinary users.
6. Require HTTPS and restrict the attack surface
Obtain and configure a certificate for the VPS hostname, redirect accidental HTTP requests to HTTPS, and ensure the DAV location is present only in the TLS virtual host. Basic Authentication is acceptable only when protected by TLS; otherwise the password is exposed to network observers.
DAV methods can consume significant resources. Apache documentation calls out denial-of-service risks from very large PROPFIND requests and from exhausting disk space. Apply request-depth and body-size limits appropriate to your clients, monitor free space and inode availability, and rate-limit or firewall access when the service is not intended for the entire internet. Keep the repository on a filesystem with enough capacity for the largest permitted upload and leave headroom for temporary files.
7. Test the configuration before production use
- Run the distribution’s Apache configuration syntax test and inspect the enabled-module list.
- Reload or restart Apache using the service manager, then check the service status and error log.
- From a client, perform an authenticated
PROPFINDagainst the user’s URL and confirm that the expected directory listing is returned. - Upload a harmless test file, download it, rename it, and delete it. Repeat with a second test account.
- Confirm that the created file is owned by the expected Apache service identity and that administrators can back it up.
- Attempt to access another user’s URL and a path above the assigned repository. Both attempts should be rejected.
- Repeat the checks without authentication and over plain HTTP to verify that the server does not disclose or modify DAV content.
These checks validate the authorization and ownership model that matters most: a user can perform the operations intended for that folder, while the Apache process cannot be used to browse unrelated parts of the VPS.

Do not enable Apache WebDAV for Nextcloud
Nextcloud’s administration documentation states that the application already includes a WebDAV server, SabreDAV. Apache’s mod_webdav is not required for the Nextcloud directory and must be disabled there if it is enabled. Turning both on can make Apache handle requests that Nextcloud expects to authenticate and authorize itself.

Leave DAV off in the Nextcloud directory, enable the web-server modules Nextcloud requires (including URL rewriting and, when applicable, proxy support for PHP-FPM), enable the site, and restart Apache as documented for your installation. Do not point Apache DAV at the Nextcloud data directory.
Use the correct endpoint and an application password
Third-party clients should connect to:
https://cloud.example.com/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/
If Nextcloud is installed under a subdirectory, include that directory in the URL. Replace USERNAME with the Nextcloud account name; it is not necessarily the Linux login name.
Nextcloud recommends creating an application password under Personal settings → Security and entering that password in the DAV client. It can be revoked independently of the main account password, which makes it safer for a single workstation or script. Never place the main password in a world-readable mount or script.
Resolve parent-authentication conflicts
A password rule on a parent virtual host or directory must not intercept Nextcloud’s DAV requests. Nextcloud’s Apache example uses Dav off in the Nextcloud directory and documents Satisfy Any when a parent authentication rule would otherwise conflict. Adapt that example to your existing configuration, then test a login with an application password. A 401 response caused by the outer rule is different from a rejected Nextcloud account, so inspect the Apache and Nextcloud logs together.
Mount Nextcloud on Linux with davfs2
Nextcloud documents a per-user mount flow for Debian and Ubuntu. It does not require root for a correctly configured user mount after the one-time administrative setup.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Install the client:
apt-get install davfs2. - Add the Linux user to the DAV group:
usermod -aG davfs2 <username>. Start a new login session so the group membership is applied. - Create the mount point and per-user configuration directory:
mkdir ~/nextcloudandmkdir ~/.davfs2. - Copy the system secrets template:
cp /etc/davfs2/secrets ~/.davfs2/secrets. - Make the secrets file belong to the Linux user and readable only by that user:
chown <linux_username>:<linux_username> ~/.davfs2/secrets, followed bychmod 600 ~/.davfs2/secrets. - Add the Nextcloud DAV URL, the Nextcloud username, and its application password to the secrets file using the format expected by your installed
davfs2version. - Add an
/etc/fstabentry. For example:
https://example.com/nextcloud/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/ /home/<linux_username>/nextcloud davfs user,rw,auto 0 0
- Mount and unmount as the Linux user:
mount ~/nextcloudandumount ~/nextcloud. - After mounting, create a small file, list it from the web interface, rename it, and remove it. Check that a failed password does not leave the mount appearing usable.
Change auto to noauto when you want manual mounting rather than mounting during the normal filesystem pass. Keep the secrets file at mode 600; a mount that works but exposes that file to other local users is not a secure result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to give each WebDAV user only their own folder
With standalone Apache
Use separate physical directories, separate URL locations, and explicit authorization rules. For example, map /dav/alice to Alice’s directory and require only alice; map /dav/bob to Bob’s directory and require only bob. Do not expose the parent /dav location with a broad rule that lets either account enumerate every child.
Because Apache writes as one service identity, operating-system ownership cannot distinguish Alice’s new file from Bob’s new file. If a user needs to administer files directly over SSH, design a group and umask policy deliberately, or keep all administration inside DAV and backups. Avoid ad-hoc chmod changes that make the repository writable by every local account.
With Nextcloud
Use Nextcloud accounts, groups, shares, and application passwords. The DAV endpoint is rooted at the authenticated account’s file area, and access decisions are made by Nextcloud rather than by Apache filesystem aliases. Do not bypass those decisions by granting the web server a separate DAV path into the data directory.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 401 Unauthorized | Wrong credentials, wrong endpoint, or a parent authentication rule | Use the exact URL, try the Nextcloud application password, inspect both web-server and application logs, and remove conflicting parent authentication. |
| 403 Forbidden | The authenticated account is not authorized for that location, or Apache cannot traverse the filesystem path | Check the location’s Require rule, directory execute permissions, and Apache’s configured User/Group. |
| 405 or DAV methods rejected | DAV is not enabled at the intended location, or Apache DAV was incorrectly placed in front of Nextcloud | Verify the active module list and Dav On scope for standalone Apache; verify Dav off for Nextcloud. |
| Uploads fail with permission errors | Apache can read but cannot write, or the directory is owned by an incompatible account | Test directory traversal and write access as the Apache service identity. Correct ownership and minimum permissions on the dedicated repository. |
| Files appear with unexpected owners | DAV-created files inherit Apache’s runtime identity | Do not expect the authenticated web username to become the Unix owner. Adjust the administration and backup plan. |
davfs2 reports a temporary resource problem while creating files |
Lock handling can conflict with the server or client | Nextcloud documents trying use_locks 0 in /etc/davfs2/davfs2.conf. Apply it only after checking logs and understanding the concurrency trade-off. |
| Certificate validation fails | The certificate is self-signed or the client does not trust its issuer | For a self-signed certificate, import it into davfs2’s certificate directory and configure servercert. Prefer a certificate trusted by the client fleet for public services. |
| Requests work briefly, then stop | Disk or inode exhaustion, oversized requests, or a resource limit | Check free space, inode use, request limits, and logs. Monitor capacity before clients receive write failures. |
Security and maintenance checklist
- Expose DAV only through HTTPS and verify certificate validation from every client type.
- Authenticate every DAV location; never rely on an obscure URL as protection.
- Use separate accounts and explicit folder authorization rather than a shared administrator password.
- Keep the DAV root separate from executable code, web configuration, and Nextcloud’s data directory.
- Grant Apache only the filesystem permissions it needs and remember that its service identity owns new files.
- Protect password files and
davfs2secrets with owner-only permissions. - Set sensible request-depth and upload-size limits, and monitor disk space and inodes.
- Back up the repository and test restoring a file. A backup process must be able to read files created by Apache or by the Nextcloud application.
- Review accounts and revoke unused credentials. For Nextcloud clients, revoke an application password rather than changing the account’s primary password when only one device is lost.
- After every Apache, PHP, or Nextcloud update, repeat an authenticated listing and a complete create/rename/delete test.
Which approach should you deploy?
Choose standalone Apache when the requirement is a small, predictable repository and you want the web server to be the authorization boundary. It has fewer application dependencies, but you must design URL-to-folder mappings, authentication, service-account permissions, backups, and resource limits yourself.
Choose Nextcloud when users need application-managed accounts, sharing, synchronization, and revocable app passwords. Its WebDAV endpoint is already part of the application, so adding Apache’s DAV module to the same tree is unnecessary and unsafe. In either case, the reliable pattern is the same: isolate the storage, authenticate every request, use TLS, give the serving process only the permissions it requires, and verify both allowed and denied operations with test accounts.
