To sync Xbox game progress, sign in with the same Xbox/Microsoft account on both devices, connect each device to the internet, launch the same supported game, and let its “syncing data” process finish before playing. Xbox compares the local and cloud save timestamps: it uploads the newer local save, downloads a newer cloud save, does nothing when both match, or asks you to choose when both copies changed. Close the game while connected so it has a chance to upload at the end of the session. Offline play remains on the original device until that device reconnects and synchronizes.
What do Xbox cloud saves actually synchronize?
Xbox connected storage keeps a title’s saved-game data on the device and synchronizes it with Xbox services when the title is online. After synchronization, that save can be downloaded by another device running the same supported title under the same account. The system is designed for roaming progress, not for creating a separate, user-managed backup file.

A shutdown, lost network connection, suspended game, or a game’s own implementation can delay either attempt.
The save system considers the device that currently owns the active save session. Two devices trying to use the same save at once can trigger an ownership lock or prevent a clean update. For the most reliable handoff, finish on one device, reconnect it, close the game, and only then start the title elsewhere.

How do I set up Xbox cloud saves on a new console, PC, or handheld?
The setup is mostly automatic, but the order matters. Complete these checks before you start a new session on the destination device.
- Use one profile everywhere. Sign in to the exact Xbox/Microsoft profile that owns the game progress on every console, Windows PC, handheld, or supported cloud-gaming client. Each profile has a separate save namespace, so a different account can appear to have no progress even when the game is installed correctly.
- Connect the source device first. Put the device containing your latest progress online and make sure it can reach Xbox services. If you played offline, do not switch devices yet; the local save must reconnect before it can be uploaded.
- End the source session cleanly. Save in the game if it has a manual save command, then quit or suspend it while connected. Microsoft documents an upload attempt at session end when connectivity is available.
- Prepare the destination device. Install the same game and the same edition or platform version that supports the save system. Sign in with the same profile and remain online before launching.
- Launch and wait. At startup, the game initializes its save provider and checks Xbox services. Leave any “syncing data” message or conflict dialog open until it completes; starting gameplay during this stage can create a second, competing local state.
- Verify the loaded progress. Check the in-game profile, chapter, world, or most recent save slot before making new changes. If the expected progress is missing, stop playing and use the troubleshooting steps below rather than allowing a new session to overwrite the local state.
What does the sync indicator show on PC and handhelds?
Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator for PC and handheld experiences on January 21, 2026. Where the feature has reached your device and title, it provides a visible indication of cloud-save status so you can check whether recent progress is synchronized. Its presence, wording, and rollout can vary by platform, account, and game, so the absence of an indicator does not by itself prove that a save failed.

When a title starts online, Xbox compares the local and cloud copies and their timestamps. The supported Game Saves flow can take one of four actions:

Microsoft describes the title—not a universal Xbox rule—as determining whether to upload, download, do nothing, or resolve a conflict. Menu labels and the amount of information shown can therefore differ between games.
Can I play Xbox games offline and upload the save later?
Yes. A game can continue using local Game Saves storage while the device is offline, but those changes cannot reach the cloud until the original device reconnects. If you start the game on another device before that upload occurs, the second device may download older cloud progress.

To protect an offline session, reconnect the original device before opening the title anywhere else. Launch it while online, let synchronization complete, and close it cleanly. If the device was shut down or the game was suspended without a connection, give it time online at the next launch and exit before moving to another screen.
What happens if I played offline on two devices?
Each device can now contain a different local timeline. When one of them reconnects, Xbox may upload that device’s copy; when the other reconnects, the service can detect that both local and cloud data changed and present a conflict. Decide which session contains the progress you want, preserve any unique information manually if the game allows it, and choose only after reading the dialog carefully.
How do I force an Xbox cloud-save sync?
There is no universal “upload now” command inside every game. You can encourage a fresh synchronization by making the connection and session state unambiguous.
- Connect the device to a reliable internet connection and confirm you are signed in to the intended Xbox profile.
- Close the game completely on every other console, PC, or handheld using that profile. Two active sessions can contend for save ownership.
- Start the game on the device containing the desired progress and wait at the title screen for any synchronization message to disappear.
- Load the intended save, allow the game to finish its own saving process, and exit to the dashboard or launcher while still online.
- Wait briefly, then launch the game on the destination device. Do not bypass a download or conflict prompt.
The documented periodic attempt—about every 30 minutes during gameplay for supported APIs—is not a guarantee that every title uploads on that exact schedule. Ending a connected session gives the service an additional documented opportunity to send the latest data.
Why is my Xbox game progress not showing on my PC or handheld?
The usual causes are an account mismatch, an unsupported save implementation, an offline source session, or a game/version mismatch. Check these in order before deleting anything.

- Different account: Compare the gamer tag or Microsoft account identity shown on both devices. Signing into the correct account is required; purchases or a shared console setting do not merge save namespaces.
- Source never uploaded: Return to the original device, connect it, launch the game, and close it cleanly. A recent offline session remains local until this happens.
- Game support differs: A console edition and a Windows PC edition can be separate products with separate save systems. Cloud roaming works only where the same title and Xbox connected-storage implementation support it.
- Wrong edition or version: Confirm that the destination has the same title family, edition, and compatible update. A different release can legitimately show no shared progress.
- Another device still has the session: Fully quit or suspend the game elsewhere, then retry the destination launch. An ownership lock can block synchronization while two sessions are active.
- Sync is still running: Leave the title at startup until the data check completes. Powering off or choosing a new game during that window can leave the destination with an incomplete local state.
What should I do when the destination shows older progress?
Do not continue playing on the destination if it has loaded an old checkpoint. Go back to the device where the newer progress was created, reconnect it, and close the game while online so that local copy gets a chance to upload. Then launch the title on the destination and wait for the cloud download.
If the original device is unavailable, the older cloud copy may be the only version that synchronized. Avoid deleting data while investigating; first identify the device and timestamp associated with the progress you want to preserve.
How do I resolve an Xbox save conflict safely?
A conflict means Xbox detected changes in both the local and cloud copies. The dialog may show timestamps, device names, or descriptions of the saves. Read those details rather than selecting the first option.
- Pause at the conflict screen and note which copy contains the latest meaningful progress.
- Choose the local version only when the device’s progress is the one you want to upload and keep.
- Choose the cloud version only when the cloud copy is the version you want downloaded to this device.
- After the choice is applied, load the game and verify the expected chapter, character, world, or save slot.
Choosing one version can overwrite the other. If the game offers an in-game export, manual backup, or multiple save slots, use that option before resolving a conflict; Xbox’s generic sync flow does not provide a reversible archive of every discarded state.

Work from the least destructive checks to the most targeted reset. Do not delete cloud data as a first response.

- Check that the device is online and that Xbox services are reachable. A brief network interruption can leave a pending synchronization waiting for a retry.
- Confirm the same profile is signed in and that the game is closed on other devices.
- Restart the game and allow the startup synchronization to run again. If the title was suspended for a long time, a full close and relaunch can clear the stale session.
- Restart the device if the game repeatedly returns to the same pending state, then retry while connected.
- Use the game’s own saved-data management screen only after you have identified which copy is stale. Remove the local copy—not the cloud copy—when your goal is to force a fresh cloud download.
Labels and recovery controls vary by platform and title. A failed sync does not establish that the cloud copy is gone; it can simply indicate a connection, ownership, or compatibility problem.
How do I restore a newer cloud save by deleting only the stale local copy?
Removing a local copy can make the next launch download the cloud version, but the operation is potentially destructive if the local copy is actually the one you need. Confirm that the desired progress is present in the cloud or on another synchronized device first.
Exact Minecraft path
Microsoft’s official Xbox instructions for Minecraft use this console path:
- Open Home > My games & apps > See all.
- Highlight Minecraft and press the Menu button.
- Select Manage game.
- Open Saved data, choose the relevant profile, and select Delete from console.
- Launch Minecraft while online and wait for the cloud data to synchronize.
Delete from console removes the local copy on that console; it is different from an option that deletes the saved data everywhere or from the cloud. Other games can use different menu names and may not expose the same controls, so apply this exact path only to Minecraft.

Cloud saves roam only where the same title and save system are supported. Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, handheld experiences, and Xbox Cloud Gaming can participate when the game uses the relevant Xbox service layer, but support is title- and platform-specific. A game that has separate console and PC releases may not share saves even when both versions are sold under a similar name. Check the title’s platform support before assuming that a console save will appear on PC.
How can I avoid losing progress during a device switch?
- Finish important objectives and create an in-game save before changing devices.
- Keep the source device online through the save and exit process.
- Close the title rather than leaving two active sessions running under one profile.
- On the destination, wait for synchronization before entering a new game or overwriting a slot.
- When a conflict appears, compare the displayed times and progress, and never choose blindly.
- Delete only a stale local copy when restoring from the cloud; deleting a cloud copy is a separate, potentially destructive action.
