You can play Xbox on a compatible handheld in three distinct ways: run supported games on the handheld itself, stream a game from Xbox Cloud Gaming, or stream a game installed on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S with Remote Play. Cloud Gaming runs the title on Microsoft’s Xbox servers; Remote Play runs it on your own console and sends the picture and controls to the handheld. The right setup therefore depends on whether you own a console, whether the game is in the current cloud catalog, your Game Pass access, and whether your device and region are supported.

This guide explains the requirements, exact setup paths, Windows 11 Xbox mode, the differences between cloud streaming and Remote Play, and the checks that resolve the most common connection failures. Product availability, supported regions, subscription entitlements and catalog contents change, so verify those items for your market immediately before setup.

What are the three ways to play Xbox on a handheld?

A compatible handheld can expose Xbox games through local installation, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Xbox Remote Play. These are separate delivery methods even when they appear together in the Xbox app.

Local play

Local play installs a compatible PC or console version on the handheld and uses the device’s own processor, storage and graphics hardware. It does not require a home Xbox console, but the title must have a version that runs on the handheld’s operating system and hardware.

Xbox Cloud Gaming

Cloud Gaming runs the game on Xbox server infrastructure in an Azure datacenter. The handheld receives a live video stream and sends controller input back to the service. You do not install the streamed title on the handheld, but you do need a supported device, a supported region, a compatible Xbox app or browser path, and the Game Pass access required for the selected game.

Xbox Remote Play

Remote Play runs a game on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. The console must have Remote features enabled, contain or otherwise provide access to the game, and remain powered on or in Sleep mode. The handheld acts as the remote screen and controller connection; it is not replacing the console’s hardware.

What do I need before setting up Xbox Remote Play?

Remote Play has a short but strict checklist. If any required item is missing, the console will not appear as an available streaming source.

  • An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console.
  • Remote features enabled in the console’s settings.
  • The console powered on or set to Sleep mode, rather than fully shut down.
  • Internet access for both the console connection and the handheld.
  • A supported handheld device.
  • The game installed or otherwise available through the console’s library.
  • The same Microsoft/Xbox account used on the console and in the handheld’s Xbox app.

Xbox lists internet access, a supported device, games, enabled Remote features and a console that is on or in Sleep mode as the core requirements. ASUS gives the same device-level requirements for its ROG Xbox Ally hardware. Because supported-device lists and software labels can change, use the current Xbox and device support pages for your territory when a menu does not match the wording below.

How do I set up Xbox Remote Play on a handheld?

The setup is completed in two places: the Xbox console and the handheld. Complete the console configuration first so the app can discover it.

1. Sign in on the handheld

  1. Connect the handheld to the internet.
  2. Install or open the Xbox app, or use the supported Xbox remote-play web path offered for your device.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account associated with the console. A different account can prevent the console or its games from appearing.

2. Enable Remote features on the console

  1. Turn on the Xbox One or Series X|S.
  2. Open the console’s Settings and locate the Remote features section under the device or system options.
  3. Enable Remote features and complete any availability or power-mode confirmation shown by the console.
  4. Leave the console powered on or in Sleep mode. A full shutdown removes it as a Remote Play target.

3. Confirm the game is available

Remote Play can stream games available from the console. Confirm that the title is installed or otherwise accessible in the console’s library and that the account signed in on the handheld has permission to play it.

4. Start the session

  1. In the handheld’s Xbox app, open the Remote Play entry. If your device uses the supported web path instead, open that path after signing in.
  2. Select the discovered Xbox console.
  3. Wait for the connection test or startup screen to finish, then choose the game and begin playing.

The first connection can take longer while the app wakes the console from Sleep mode. If the console is not listed, check the account, internet connection, Remote features setting and power mode before changing anything else.

How do I use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a handheld?

Cloud Gaming does not need a separate Xbox console, but it does require a supported handheld, region, access plan and cloud-playable title. The game runs remotely, so the handheld is decoding a stream rather than executing the full game locally.

  1. On the handheld, open the Xbox app or navigate to xbox.com/play through a supported browser.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the required Game Pass access.
  3. Browse the games marked as playable in the cloud. Catalog access depends on plan, region, device and date.
  4. Select a title and choose Play. The service starts the game on Xbox server infrastructure and streams it to the handheld.
  5. When you finish, exit the game through its normal menu so the cloud session closes cleanly.

Microsoft’s cloud-device list, browser and app support, catalog and regional availability are changeable. Check those current lists before troubleshooting a title that does not show a Play option. A game can be available for local installation or console Remote Play without being available in the cloud catalog.

Do I need Game Pass for Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Yes, cloud streaming requires the Game Pass access specified for the title and service in your region. The exact plan rules and catalog are not universal: they vary by territory, device, time and subscription tier, so confirm the entitlement shown on the current Xbox service page rather than relying on an old plan name.

Xbox UK described Game Pass Ultimate as offering more than 400 games in 2025, but that figure is a dated, regional catalog description, not a permanent guarantee. A game may leave the catalog, be restricted in a territory, or require a different entitlement. Sign in before subscribing when possible and verify that the specific title displays cloud-play availability for your account.

What is the difference between Xbox Remote Play and Xbox Cloud Gaming?

The decisive difference is where the game executes. Remote Play uses your home Xbox console; Cloud Gaming uses an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter. That difference affects hardware ownership, catalog access, setup and failure diagnosis.

Question Xbox Remote Play Xbox Cloud Gaming
Where does the game run? Your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S at home. An Xbox server in an Azure datacenter.
Do you need a separate console? Yes. It must be configured for Remote Play and on or in Sleep mode. No separate console is required.
What games can you access? Games installed or otherwise available through your own console and account. Titles currently marked cloud-playable for your plan, account, device and region.
Is a Game Pass cloud entitlement required? Not for the Remote Play connection itself; you still need the normal license or access to play the game on your console. Yes, the required Game Pass access for the title and region.
What must be configured? Console Remote features, console power mode, internet and account sign-in. Supported device and region, compatible app or browser, internet and Game Pass access.
What happens if the home console is unavailable? The session cannot start or continue. The session can still start if the cloud service, account, device and region are supported.
What determines the available library? Your console’s installed or accessible games and their licenses. The changing cloud catalog and your subscription entitlement.

Neither method has one universal latency or bandwidth number that applies to every handheld, home network and location. The official requirements establish internet access and regional support, but actual responsiveness depends on the route between your device and the console or datacenter, congestion and the quality of both connections.

Can an ROG Xbox Ally use both Remote Play and Cloud Gaming?

Yes. Xbox presents the ROG Xbox Ally family as an Xbox handheld capable of native play, cloud streaming and Remote Play, while ASUS describes streaming from Xbox Cloud Gaming and access to an Xbox console through Remote Play. The two streaming methods still retain their different requirements: Remote Play needs your configured console, while Cloud Gaming needs the supported service, plan and region.

Xbox Wire’s Roanne Sones, CVP Gaming Devices and Ecosystem, said both devices allow players to play natively, via the cloud or remotely with an Xbox console in another room. The same Xbox Wire announcement referred to support for more than 1,000 games through Xbox Play Anywhere in 2025. That figure describes the cited Play Anywhere statement at that time; it is not a promise that every game is cloud-playable or that the catalog remains unchanged.

How do I enable Xbox mode on a Windows 11 handheld?

Windows 11 handhelds with the required software can use Xbox mode as a controller-friendly gaming home. Microsoft documents Xbox mode for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in supported markets.

  1. Open Settings on the handheld.
  2. Choose Gaming.
  3. Open Xbox mode.
  4. Select a supported gaming home app.
  5. Optionally enable Enter Xbox mode on startup if you want the handheld to launch directly into that interface.

Xbox mode changes the Windows gaming entry point; it does not itself provide a Game Pass entitlement, add a console, or turn every Windows handheld into a cloud-supported device. If the Xbox mode page is missing, check that Windows is version 24H2 or later and that your market is supported.

How should I choose between Remote Play and Cloud Gaming?

Choose based on the library and hardware you need rather than assuming one stream is always better.

Choose Remote Play when:

  • You own an Xbox One or Series X|S and want to use its installed library.
  • You want to access games that are not in the current cloud catalog.
  • Your console can remain on or in Sleep mode and has a reliable internet connection.
  • You want the console’s storage, licenses and installed content available from another room.

Choose Cloud Gaming when:

  • You do not have an Xbox console available.
  • You want to try a cloud-catalog title without installing it on the handheld.
  • You are away from home and cannot leave your console configured for Remote Play.
  • Your Game Pass access, device and region show the title as cloud-playable.

Use local installation when:

  • The handheld has a compatible native version and you want to avoid streaming dependence.
  • The title is not available in the cloud and you do not need your home console’s copy.
  • You need play to continue when internet access is unavailable, subject to the game’s own licensing and offline rules.

What should I check when Remote Play fails?

Work through the requirements in the order that the connection uses them. This avoids changing unrelated settings.

The console does not appear

  • Confirm the handheld and console use the same Microsoft/Xbox account.
  • Verify that Remote features are enabled on the console.
  • Wake the console or set it to Sleep mode; a fully shut-down console cannot be selected.
  • Confirm both devices have internet access, then reopen the Xbox app or supported web path.

The console appears but the game will not start

  • Check that the game is installed or otherwise available on the console.
  • Confirm the signed-in account has the required game license or access.
  • Close any existing session on the console and try the Remote Play entry again.

The stream disconnects

  • Check whether the handheld has lost internet access.
  • Confirm the console remains powered on or in Sleep mode.
  • Move the handheld to a location with a more stable connection and retry before changing account settings.

Xbox’s published requirements do not establish one bandwidth or latency threshold that works for every location. Treat a connection that starts but repeatedly drops as a network-path problem first, while remembering that a supported device, account and console configuration are still mandatory.

What should I check when Cloud Gaming is unavailable?

  • Open the current Xbox cloud-play page or Xbox app and verify that the title has a cloud Play option.
  • Confirm the account has the Game Pass access required in your region.
  • Check that the handheld, browser or app is on the current supported-device list.
  • Confirm cloud gaming is offered in your country or market.
  • Sign out and back in if the account’s plan or catalog status changed recently.

A missing title does not necessarily indicate a hardware fault. Cloud availability can change with catalog rotations, plan rules, regional licensing and device support. Remote Play is a separate route and may still work for a title available on your own console.

What changes most often, and when should I recheck it?

Recheck volatile details immediately before publishing or buying hardware: product availability, specifications, pricing, Game Pass plan names, cloud catalog entries, supported regions, compatible browsers and Windows Xbox mode support. Xbox and ASUS may update device instructions or app labels without changing the underlying distinction between local play, Cloud Gaming and Remote Play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a reliable setup, verify the handheld model, update Windows and the Xbox app, sign in with the console account, enable Remote features, leave the console on or in Sleep mode, and then choose the correct streaming path for the game you want to play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Xbox Remote Play when my console is completely turned off?

No. Remote Play requires the Xbox One or Series X|S to be powered on or in Sleep mode with Remote features enabled. A full shutdown removes the console from the available Remote Play targets until you start it again.

Why is a game playable on my Xbox but missing from Cloud Gaming?

Remote Play uses the games available through your own console, whereas Cloud Gaming uses a separate, changing catalog. A title can therefore work through Remote Play without being included in your current plan, region or cloud-device catalog.

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming install games on the handheld?

No. The game executes on Xbox server infrastructure and the handheld receives a stream. The handheld still needs a supported app or browser, internet access and the required Game Pass entitlement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Windows version supports Xbox mode on a handheld?

Microsoft documents Xbox mode for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in supported markets. If the Xbox mode setting is absent, check both the Windows version and regional availability before troubleshooting the Xbox app.
