There is no single Xbox button combination that works for every War Thunder control preset. In Controls, check the button currently assigned to the missile action you need: for air-to-air missiles, use Weapon lock (air-to-air) to acquire or clear a lock and Fire air-to-air missile to launch. For aircraft air-to-ground missiles, select the missile as your active secondary weapon before firing.
Set up the missile controls on Xbox
Open the aircraft controls in the hangar or Controls menu and search for the action names below. The button shown beside each action in your current bindings is the one to use; controller assignments can differ by preset or custom layout.

- Find Weapon lock (air-to-air) and assign it to a reachable input if it is unbound.
- Find Fire air-to-air missile and assign it separately from the lock action.
- For air-to-ground missiles, check the bindings for Switch secondary weapons and Fire secondary weapon, as well as any vehicle-specific missile, seeker, or guidance controls.
Community advice recommends keeping air-to-air lock and fire on separate inputs, but does not establish an authoritative Xbox default combination. A console player’s button-chord example is a personal layout, not a universal mapping. War Thunder forum discussions

- In battle, point toward an eligible aircraft target and press your bound Weapon lock (air-to-air) control.
- Check the in-game seeker or lock indication. For an infrared missile, the seeker tracks an infrared source; whether it can acquire a useful lock depends on the missile and situation.
- When the desired lock is indicated, press your bound Fire air-to-air missile control.
Missiles do not all use the same guidance method, so follow the seeker display and in-game prompts rather than assuming every missile has identical lock conditions. The indexed air-to-air reference describes weapon behavior, but its listed keyboard combinations are not Xbox button mappings. War Thunder Wiki: Air-to-air missiles

Fire an air-to-ground missile
- Check that your aircraft loadout carries the missile you intend to use.
- Use Switch secondary weapons to cycle to that missile, then confirm it is selected.
- Fire with your bound Fire secondary weapon control or the applicable air-to-ground missile control shown in your bindings.
- If the weapon requires target acquisition or steering, use its seeker cues and the relevant guidance inputs shown in Controls. Some guided weapons need actions after launch; they are not all fire-and-forget.
War Thunder’s indexed air-to-ground reference describes multiple guidance methods, but its PC key labels should not be treated as Xbox assignments. War Thunder Wiki: Air-to-ground missiles
Aircraft missiles and SPAA use different control paths
Aircraft use their weapon bindings and, for air-to-ground missiles, secondary-weapon selection. Supported SPAA have a separate option: the Radar Control Screen offers target selection and fire-control actions, including missile launch and seeker toggling. The official description notes that its target-list fire control is useful with a controller or on console. War Thunder official forum: Radar Control Screen

If the missile will not fire
- Confirm the selected vehicle and its equipped loadout actually include missiles.
- For an air-to-air missile, check that both Weapon lock (air-to-air) and Fire air-to-air missile have usable bindings.
- For an aircraft air-to-ground missile, check that the missile is selected and that the secondary-weapon fire control is bound.
- If weapons selector mode is active, use Switch secondary weapons to select the missile and Fire secondary weapon to launch it. Selector mode can disable other weapon-type controls until you exit it. War Thunder Wiki: Weapons selector
- Check the seeker display and prompts for a valid acquisition or guidance step; a launch may require more than pressing fire.
- For supported SPAA, use the Radar Control Screen’s fire-control panel and target list rather than the aircraft missile bindings.
