The quickest way to see frames per second on a Windows 10 gaming PC is to press Windows logo key + G and open Xbox Game Bar. Microsoft describes Game Bar as built into Windows and compatible with most PC games, but its current help pages do not confirm that the FPS tab and permission process work on every Windows 10 installation. If the FPS control is missing, use the overlay already supplied by your graphics software: NVIDIA supports an FPS and performance overlay on GeForce RTX and GTX 600-series-and-newer hardware, while Steam and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition offer launcher or GPU-specific alternatives.
This guide gives the exact setup paths, explains the Windows 10 caveat, and shows how to choose an overlay without claiming that one is universally more accurate or faster. No monitor, GPU, or other physical purchase is required just to display the number.

What does an FPS counter show, and why use one?
FPS means frames per second: the number of rendered images a game presents over one second. An on-screen counter lets you watch that value while playing instead of leaving the game to inspect a benchmark afterward. It is useful for checking whether a setting change affects rendering, finding moments when performance falls, and distinguishing a steady experience from one with frequent fluctuations.
The number is not a complete diagnosis. A counter can show FPS, while separate telemetry may show GPU temperature, clock speed, CPU use, memory use, or latency. Those readings explain why a game slows down; the FPS value tells you what the game is delivering. For a simple check, choose the least-cluttered display offered by the overlay you already have.

How do I try the Xbox Game Bar FPS counter on Windows 10?
Start with Game Bar because it is a Windows overlay and requires no separate monitoring utility.
Open Game Bar in the game
- Launch the game and wait until you are at the point where you want to observe performance.
- Press Windows logo key + G. Game Bar should appear over the game.
- Open the Performance widget. If an FPS section is available, select its FPS tab and pin the widget so it remains visible after the rest of Game Bar closes.
Microsoft describes Game Bar as built into Windows and says it works with most PC games. The current Microsoft consumer page reviewed for this guide is framed around Windows 11 help, however, so that page establishes the shortcut and the general overlay, not a universal Windows 10 FPS workflow.
What does “Request access” mean?
Older Microsoft community guidance from 2020 and newer secondary guides describe an FPS-tab flow in which you select Request access, approve the prompt, and restart the PC. On some Windows 10 builds this may be the route that makes the counter appear; on others the tab, permission button, or wording can be different. Treat it as version-dependent rather than a guaranteed Windows 10 procedure.
- In the Performance widget, look for the FPS tab and select Request access if it is shown.
- Approve the Windows prompt, then restart the computer when asked.
- Reopen the game, press Windows logo key + G, and check the Performance widget again.
If there is no FPS tab or no permission control, check that Xbox Game Bar is updated through the Microsoft Store and note the installed Game Bar version. The absence of the control does not prove that your game is unsupported; it may reflect the Windows 10 build or the Game Bar version. In that situation, move to a GPU or launcher overlay instead of repeatedly reinstalling Windows components.
What Windows 10 recording support does—and does not—prove
Microsoft has support material showing that Game Bar recording instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Recording support is a separate feature, so it should not be used as proof that the FPS tab is available on every Windows 10 installation.

How do I enable the NVIDIA FPS overlay?
NVIDIA provides the clearest documented alternative when the PC uses supported GeForce hardware. NVIDIA says desktop and laptop GeForce RTX and GeForce GTX 600 Series-and-newer users can enable in-game performance-monitoring metrics.
Turn on the overlay
- Open the NVIDIA App.
- Open Settings, then Features.
- Enable In-Game Overlay.
- Launch the game and press Alt + R, the default shortcut for toggling the statistics overlay.
The overlay can show frame rate as well as additional readings such as clock speeds and GPU temperatures. If you want to cycle through different metric sets while playing, NVIDIA documents Alt + Shift + R as the default shortcut.
Change the hotkey, metrics, or appearance
- Press Alt + Z to open the NVIDIA overlay.
- Select the Settings cog, then Shortcuts to change the keyboard combinations.
- For the information shown and its visual treatment, open Statistics, then Configure heads up display.
- Choose a compact FPS-only presentation if you only need a number, or enable the extra sensor readings when troubleshooting a slowdown.
NVIDIA’s support article, updated August 4, 2025, is the authority for these menu names and supported GeForce generations. A laptop with an integrated GPU but no supported GeForce adapter will not meet that prerequisite; use Game Bar, Steam, or the graphics software that actually drives the game.
How can I display FPS through Steam?
Steam is a practical choice for games launched through Steam, but the setup details below come from recent secondary guides rather than an official Valve setup page. Steam’s labels can change, so use the wording in the client installed on your PC as the final reference.
- Open the Steam client and choose Steam > Settings.
- Open the In Game section.
- Find the performance-monitoring or FPS-overlay control and enable it.
- Select an on-screen position and a detail level, then start a game through Steam to test the overlay.
Recent guides describe levels ranging from a single FPS value to expanded CPU, GPU, and RAM statistics. If your client presents fewer choices, select the basic FPS display first; additional telemetry is optional and is not required to count frames. A menu that differs from those descriptions is not necessarily an error—Steam updates can rename or relocate controls.

How do I use AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition for an FPS counter?
AMD’s route is intended for systems running AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. The setup and shortcut described here are reported by recent secondary guides, not verified against an official AMD setup page in the available material, so confirm the labels in your installed release.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open the performance or metrics settings and enable the Metrics Overlay.
- Start the game and use the default shortcut reported by recent guides, Ctrl + Shift + O, to show or hide the overlay.
- Adjust which readings appear and where they are placed in the application’s metrics settings.
If the shortcut does nothing, open the current AMD Software hotkey settings rather than assuming the combination is still assigned. Driver packages and application releases can change both the shortcut and the path to metrics controls.
Which FPS-counter method should I choose?
Choose the overlay that is already installed, supports the way you launch the game, and exposes the amount of information you need. The available sources do not provide controlled tests comparing accuracy, frame-rate impact, or resource overhead, so there is no evidence-based universal winner.
| Method | Best fit | First-use setup | Readout and controls | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Bar | Windows 10 users who want a built-in entry point | Press Windows logo key + G; the FPS tab may require Request access and a restart | Performance widget; pin it for an in-game display | Microsoft’s current page confirms Game Bar and the shortcut, but does not settle the present Windows 10 FPS-tab workflow |
| NVIDIA App | Desktop or laptop GeForce RTX and GTX 600-series-and-newer systems | Settings > Features > In-Game Overlay, then Alt + R | FPS, clock speeds, temperatures, configurable metrics and appearance; Alt + Shift + R cycles views | Use only when the supported GeForce hardware and NVIDIA overlay are present |
| Steam | Games launched through Steam | Steam > Settings > In Game; enable the performance monitor | Guides describe single-FPS through expanded CPU/GPU/RAM levels | Menu details are from secondary guides and may vary by client version |
| AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Systems using AMD’s graphics software | Enable Metrics Overlay in AMD Software; guides report Ctrl + Shift + O | Configurable performance metrics | Shortcut and labels can change; the route is supported here by secondary guides |
There is no need to install every overlay. Using the launcher or GPU software that is already active usually minimizes setup work. If you only want a number, select the smallest display mode instead of enabling every available sensor.
What should I do if the FPS counter does not appear?
Game Bar opens, but there is no FPS option
- Open the Performance widget and verify that you are looking for an FPS tab, not only CPU, GPU, or memory graphs.
- Check Microsoft Store updates for Xbox Game Bar and record the installed version.
- Restart after any Request access prompt.
- If the tab remains absent, use NVIDIA, Steam, or AMD software rather than treating an older community procedure as a guaranteed Windows 10 fix.
NVIDIA’s Alt + R shortcut does nothing
- Open the NVIDIA App and confirm Settings > Features > In-Game Overlay is enabled.
- Press Alt + Z, open the settings cog, and inspect Shortcuts for the current assignment.
- Use the Statistics configuration screen to ensure a heads-up display is selected, then test again in a running game.
Steam or AMD controls are in a different place
Open the installed client’s current In Game, Performance, or Metrics settings and search for an overlay toggle. The Steam and AMD paths described above come from secondary guides, so a changed label or shortcut is more likely an interface revision than a hardware failure.

The overlay works in one game but not another
Test the same overlay in a second game and check whether the game uses a mode that blocks third-party overlays. Keep the diagnosis narrow: first confirm that the overlay appears on the desktop or in another title, then inspect that game’s display mode and launcher settings. Do not infer a measured performance penalty from a missing overlay; the available sources do not provide controlled overhead tests.
The displayed number jumps around
Short-term changes are normal when a game loads a new area, adds effects, or changes its workload. Watch the pattern over the same scene and settings rather than treating one momentary value as a complete performance assessment. If the overlay includes GPU temperature, clocks, CPU use, or memory use, those extra readings can help identify which component changes at the same time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I read the FPS number once it is visible?
Use the counter as an observation tool. Compare like with like: the same game scene, resolution, graphics preset, and background workload. A stable reading is generally more informative than a brief peak, while repeated drops during the same action point to a repeatable workload that deserves further investigation.

Frequently asked questions
Does an FPS counter work in every Windows 10 game?
No overlay is established as universal. Game Bar is described as working with most PC games, while Steam and GPU overlays depend on the launcher, graphics hardware, game mode, and whether that title permits the overlay to hook into it.

Can I show GPU temperature and FPS at the same time?
Yes, when the selected overlay exposes both metrics. NVIDIA explicitly documents frame rates, clock speeds, GPU temperatures, and other readings; Steam and AMD displays may offer broader telemetry depending on the client or driver release.
Is FPS the same thing as monitor refresh rate?
No. FPS is the rate at which the game renders frames, whereas refresh rate is how often the display can refresh. They can differ, so an FPS counter alone does not tell you the display’s refresh setting or whether every rendered frame is being shown.

Does recording with Game Bar guarantee that its FPS counter is available?
No. Microsoft documents recording support for Windows 10 and Windows 11 separately from the FPS feature. A PC can support Game Bar recording while still lacking the FPS tab or its permission flow in the installed Windows 10/Game Bar combination.
