To sign out of an Xbox Series X or Series S, press the Xbox button, open Profile & system, and select Sign out. This ends the active session but keeps the profile on the console for a later sign-in. If you are selling, gifting, or recycling the Xbox, do not stop at sign-out: back up what you need, reset the console to factory defaults, and remove the device from your Microsoft account.
How do I sign out of an Xbox Series X or Series S?
The normal sign-out takes only a few menu selections and works on both current Xbox Series consoles.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Sign out.
Your current profile session ends immediately. The profile is not deleted from the Xbox, so it remains available to sign in again later. This is the correct choice when you are finished playing on a shared console but still expect to use that profile on the same machine.
What if another person is using the console?
If another profile is active and you need to sign out your own profile, switch to it first.

- Press the Xbox button again, open Profile & system, and choose Sign out.
The second pass through the guide matters: selecting a profile only changes which account is active; it does not sign that account out by itself.
What is the difference between signing out and removing an account?
Sign out ends a session while leaving the profile stored on that Xbox. Remove accounts deletes that profile’s local entry from the console, but it does not close or delete the Microsoft account.

| Action | What it changes | When to use it | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sign out | Ends the current profile session. | You have finished using a shared Xbox and may sign in again later. | It does not remove the profile from the console. |
| Remove accounts | Removes the selected profile from that Xbox. | You want the profile absent from a particular console. | It does not delete the Microsoft account or remove it from other devices. |
| Reset and remove device | Returns the console to factory defaults and lets you remove it from your Microsoft account. | You are selling, gifting, or recycling the Xbox. | It is not merely a quicker sign-out; it is a data-clearing ownership transfer. |
| Sign out everywhere | Signs the Microsoft account out of supported browsers and apps across devices. | You need to end web and app sessions after a security concern. | Microsoft says Xbox consoles are excluded from this account-wide action. |
How do I remove my profile from an Xbox Series X|S without deleting my Microsoft account?
Use the console’s Remove accounts command when you want your profile gone from one Xbox but want to keep the Microsoft account itself active.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings.
- Choose Account > Remove accounts.
- Select the profile you want to remove.
- Confirm with Remove.
This is a local-console action. Microsoft moderator guidance dated September 3, 2026, distinguishes it from closing a Microsoft account, which can affect other Microsoft services and purchases. Removing the profile from this Xbox therefore should not be treated as an account-closure request.
When should I remove a profile instead of merely signing out?
- Choose Sign out if the console is still yours and you want the profile available for the next session.
- Choose Remove accounts if the profile should no longer appear as an account option on that particular Xbox.
- Choose a factory reset workflow if somebody else will own the hardware.
Removing a profile is narrower than resetting the console: it targets the selected account entry rather than preparing the entire device for a new owner.
Can I sign out of an Xbox Series X|S remotely?
Not through Microsoft’s account-wide Sign out everywhere command. Microsoft states that this action signs the account out of browsers, apps, and other supported sign-in locations within up to 24 hours, but specifically excludes an Xbox console.

If you can reach the console, use the controller procedure above. That is the direct way to end the Xbox session. If you cannot reach it because the console has been sold, given away, or left somewhere insecure, treat the situation as a device-transfer problem rather than relying on the web sign-out control.
What does “Sign out everywhere” actually cover?
The account-security action is useful for sessions in browsers and apps. Microsoft’s stated maximum is 24 hours, so it is not an instant guarantee for every non-Xbox session. Its Xbox exclusion means you should not interpret a successful web confirmation as proof that a Series X|S has been signed out.
For an Xbox that remains in someone else’s possession, use Microsoft’s disposal and device-management guidance: reset the console to factory defaults when possible, then remove the device from your Microsoft account. This addresses both the console’s local data and its association with your account.
What should I do before selling, gifting, or recycling an Xbox?
A simple sign-out is not sufficient when ownership is changing. Microsoft’s disposal guidance calls for three separate actions: preserve anything you need, reset the Xbox, and remove the device from your Microsoft account.
1. Back up settings or other information you need
Before resetting, check that any settings or information you want to keep has been backed up or recorded. A factory reset is intended to return the Xbox to its initial state, so do this preparation before confirming the reset.
2. Reset the console to factory defaults
Open the Xbox settings and use the available reset option, following the on-screen confirmation prompts. Read the warning before accepting it: the reset is the step that clears the console for the next owner. Signing out alone leaves the device in its existing setup and is not an equivalent privacy measure.

3. Remove the device from your Microsoft account
After the reset, use Microsoft’s account device-management controls to remove the Xbox from your account. Microsoft also describes Unlink as a way to stop that device from counting toward the Microsoft Store device limit. Removing the device association is separate from deleting your Microsoft account and should be completed after the hardware has been reset.
Why is a reset required for a handoff?
Sign-out changes the active session; it does not put the console into a new-owner state. A reset removes the existing console setup, while device removal breaks the account’s association with the hardware. Skipping either step can leave personal information or an unwanted account connection on a console that someone else controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich sign-out option should I choose?
Use the outcome you need, not the wording that sounds most forceful. The following decision guide keeps the actions separate.
| Your situation | Use this action | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| I am finished playing for now. | Profile & system > Sign out | The active session ends; the profile remains on the Xbox. |
| I want one profile absent from this console. | Settings > Account > Remove accounts | The selected local profile entry is removed; the Microsoft account remains active. |
| The Xbox is being sold, gifted, or recycled. | Back up, factory-reset, then remove the device from the Microsoft account. | The console is cleared for its next owner and no longer associated with your account. |
| I need to end web or app sessions on other devices. | Microsoft account Sign out everywhere | Supported browsers and apps are signed out within Microsoft’s stated window of up to 24 hours; Xbox consoles are excluded. |
What should I check if sign-out does not seem to work?
Most apparent failures come from selecting the wrong profile or using an action that is designed for a different purpose. Work through these checks in order.
The wrong account is active
Open Profile & system > Add or switch, select the intended profile, and then repeat Profile & system > Sign out. The guide acts on the profile currently selected, so switching first prevents you from ending another person’s session by mistake.
You removed the profile when you meant to sign out
Remove accounts is a local deletion of the profile entry, not a normal session sign-out. The Microsoft account itself is not deleted by that command; to use the profile on that Xbox again, you will need to add or sign in to it again.

You used “Sign out everywhere” but the Xbox still appears signed in
This is expected for an Xbox console. Microsoft’s account-wide control expressly excludes Xbox, so use the physical console menu when you have access. If the console is changing owners, use the reset-and-device-removal workflow instead of waiting for the web action.
The controller is not responding
The documented sign-out operation is performed through the Xbox guide with a controller. If the controller cannot open the guide, restore a working controller connection before attempting the menu sequence. A replacement controller is not otherwise required for this task; the operation is built into the console software.
You are preparing the console for another owner
Do not stop after seeing a signed-out screen. Sign-out only ends the current profile session. Continue with the factory reset and Microsoft-account device removal so the console is actually prepared for transfer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does signing out change on a shared Xbox?
Signing out changes who is currently authenticated; it does not make the console forget the profile. That distinction is useful in households, gaming rooms, and any setup where multiple people take turns using one Series X|S.

Does signing out delete the Microsoft account?
No. Ordinary sign-out ends a console session, and Remove accounts removes only the selected profile from that Xbox. Neither command closes the Microsoft account.
Closing a Microsoft account is a separate, much broader decision that can affect other Microsoft services and purchases. Do not use account closure as a substitute for signing out or preparing one console for another owner.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs a replacement accessory or paid service needed?
No product or subscription is required. The action uses the built-in Xbox guide and an existing working controller.
A replacement controller is relevant only if you do not have a functioning way to operate the console. It does not add a different sign-out capability, and a USB keyboard or a printed manual does not replace the on-console account commands. The documented operation is a free menu action already included with the Xbox Series X|S.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is signing out enough when I give my Xbox to a family member?
No. A normal sign-out leaves the console configured with its existing profiles and settings. For a permanent handoff, use the factory-reset process and remove the device from your Microsoft account so the recipient starts with a cleared console.
Can I remove one profile without affecting another person’s profile?
Yes. In Remove accounts, select the specific profile you want to remove and confirm that selection. The command is applied to that local profile entry, not to every account on the Xbox.
How quickly does Microsoft’s account-wide sign-out take?
Microsoft says the action can take up to 24 hours for supported browsers, apps, and other sign-in locations. It does not sign an Xbox console out, so waiting for that window will not replace using the console menu or the transfer workflow.
Do I need to buy a new controller just to sign out?
No. Sign-out is a built-in guide command and needs only a working controller already paired with the console. Buy or borrow another controller only when the original cannot operate the Xbox at all.
