To compare WoW racials fairly, make one SimulationCraft profile for your character, clone it once per race, and change only the race value and the active-racial actions that belong to that race. Keep specialization, talents, gear, encounter, fight style, player skill, fight length, patch, and iteration count identical. Read DPS and healing as separate outputs, and measure utility as encounter events rather than inventing a universal “DPS equivalent.” If two results’ error intervals overlap substantially, treat them as effectively tied for that scenario.

What a racial simulation can—and cannot—tell you

SimulationCraft is an event-driven World of Warcraft combat simulator. It models spell events, cooldowns, procs, resources, raid damage, and other interactions that closed-form calculators cannot represent reliably. As its project documentation explains, increasing class synergy and the prevalence of proc-based combat modifiers have eroded the accuracy of traditional calculators that rely on closed-form approximations.

A report is a sample profile for the assumptions you supplied, not a permanent ranking of races. The SimulationCraft reports documentation also cautions that the tool is not intended to compare different classes. A racial test is valid when the class, specialization, encounter, and all other inputs are held constant.

  • DPS: compare mean damage per second and the error interval.
  • Healing: compare HPS, effective healing, overhealing, resource pressure, and deaths prevented when the profile produces those fields.
  • Utility: count encounter-specific events such as dispels, crowd-control successes, movement or stealth skips, defensive uptime, damage avoided, and deaths.

A racial that produces little sustained damage can still be the better choice on a fight where its defensive or control effect prevents a death. Conversely, a movement or stealth tool may have no value on a stationary target dummy. Always state the encounter assumptions beside the result.

Freeze the test conditions before changing races

Write down the test envelope first. A result without its patch, encounter, and iteration context is difficult to reproduce and easy to misread.

Record the version ledger

  • Expansion and patch or build.
  • Region, if race availability or tuning differs.
  • SimulationCraft release or commit.
  • Date the character profile was imported.
  • Encounter style, number of targets, and fight length.
  • Player skill, raid-buff assumptions, and iteration count.
  • The confidence setting used for the error interval.

Blizzard’s Midnight expansion is live as of March 3, 2026 and introduced the Haranir allied race. Race availability and racial tuning are therefore version-sensitive. A result from an earlier expansion should not be presented as a Midnight ranking without rerunning it on the current build.

Choose one encounter, not a vague average

Decide whether the question concerns sustained single-target damage, a burst window, cleave, healing throughput, or a particular utility check. Fix target count, movement, downtime, incoming damage, fight duration, and cooldown timing. A racial that aligns with a two-minute burn phase can look different from the same racial on a continuous six-minute fight.

Build the baseline profile

Start with the character and specialization you actually want to compare. Import the character, select the intended talents and gear, and verify the generated profile before editing it. The configuration supports an explicit race field and role values of dps, heal, and tank.

race=your_current_race
role=dps

For a healer, use role=heal when that matches the specialization. The report can still display a DPS-style label even when it contains healing statistics; inspect the HPS, effective healing, overhealing, resource, and death fields rather than assuming the headline label describes the test.

Validate the baseline before cloning

  1. Confirm the specialization, talents, equipment, embellishments, and consumables.
  2. Confirm the encounter and fight style, including target count and movement.
  3. Set the same fight duration and variance for every run.
  4. Choose an iteration count large enough for a stable mean; increase it when racial differences are close to the error interval.
  5. Run the baseline once and save the profile and report.

Do not change gear or talents between races. If you want to test a different build, create a separate comparison set rather than mixing the builds in one table.

Clone the profile for every race

Duplicate the baseline profile for each candidate race. In each copy, change only the race and the actions for active racials. Keep the role, class, specialization, talents, gear, encounter, fight style, duration, player skill, and iteration count unchanged.

# Baseline
race=your_current_race
role=dps

# Candidate copy
race=candidate_race
role=dps

Use the same naming convention for every copy, such as spec_race_encounter_patch. This prevents a later report from being mistaken for a different fight or build.

Model active and passive racials correctly

Active racials are actions

The official action-list documentation identifies arcane_torrent, berserking, blood_fury, and stoneform as racial actions. Include the relevant action in the candidate profile and then check the report to make sure it actually executed.

actions+=/blood_fury

An action line alone is not proof that the racial affected the result. Verify casts, cooldown use, buffs, gains, and the spell breakdown. If the action never appears, inspect its availability, target requirements, cooldown conditions, and placement in the action list.

Passive racials come from the race implementation

Passive effects should be supplied by SimulationCraft’s race implementation rather than recreated as an invented spell. After the run, verify the passive in the report’s buffs, gains, or spell breakdown. If it is absent, stop and fix the profile instead of comparing a race with a missing effect.

Use Blizzard’s values as dated examples

Blizzard’s documented examples illustrate why the timing and axis of a racial matter:

Racial example Documented effect How to treat it
Blood Fury Increases Attack Power and Spell Power by 10% for 15 seconds. Version-specific burst window; verify the current build before applying the value.
Berserking Increases casting and attack speed by 10% for 10 seconds. Version-specific haste window; check when the simulator schedules it.
Stoneform Immunity to Bleeds, Poisons, and Diseases and reduced Physical damage taken for 8 seconds. Primarily defensive and encounter-dependent, not a universal DPS number.
Shadowmeld Gain Stealth while immobile. Potential movement, skip, or threat utility; value depends on encounter scripting.
Eureka! Reduced cost and 10% increased damage or healing on the next 3 spells or abilities. Short sequence effect; inspect both damage and healing profiles where applicable.

These are documented examples, not timeless promises. Racial tuning can change with a patch, and the active action shown in an older profile may no longer match the current implementation.

Measure DPS without hiding the uncertainty

Run a sustained-damage test

  1. Choose one target count and one fight style, such as a fixed single-target encounter.
  2. Use the same fight length, movement, cooldown settings, raid buffs, and iterations for every race.
  3. Run the baseline and all cloned profiles.
  4. Record mean DPS, the error interval, and the racial action’s casts, uptime, and contribution.
  5. Repeat the run when the difference is small relative to the interval or when the action timing appears unstable.

Report the result as “race A produced X mean DPS versus race B at Y, with the stated intervals,” not as a timeless ranking. Include whether the racial aligns with a planned burst window, because a 10-second or 15-second effect can be more valuable when it overlaps the encounter’s highest-value phase.

Separate sustained and burst questions

Run separate scenarios for sustained single-target damage and burst-window alignment. Do not average them into one score. A profile can show a small mean-DPS gain while providing a large advantage during a required burn, or the reverse if the cooldown is delayed by movement or downtime.

Measure healing as healing, not DPS

Use the healer role and preserve the encounter’s incoming-damage model. Compare HPS, effective healing, overhealing, mana or other resource pressure, and deaths prevented when the profile supports those outputs.

  1. Set role=heal for a healing specialization.
  2. Define the same damage pattern, target health, raid size, and fight length for every race.
  3. Run each profile with the same healing priorities and cooldown policy.
  4. Read effective healing and overhealing together; raw HPS alone can reward healing that did not prevent damage.
  5. Record resource usage and whether the profile runs out of mana or another resource.
  6. Count deaths prevented when the encounter model exposes that outcome.

Do not merge HPS with DPS. A racial that increases the next three healing spells, for example, may improve survival during a scripted hit without producing the largest full-fight HPS number.

Model utility with encounter events

SimulationCraft can quantify utility only when the encounter and profile expose a measurable event. Define the event before running the comparison.

Useful event counters

  • Dispels: number of harmful effects removed and the timing of each removal.
  • Crowd control: successful interrupts, stuns, roots, or other controls that the encounter accepts.
  • Movement and stealth: skips, forced repositioning avoided, or downtime removed by a movement or stealth effect.
  • Defensive value: defensive-cooldown uptime, damage avoided, immunity windows, and health remaining after a hit.
  • Deaths: deaths prevented or survival through a lethal mechanic.

For each event, write the encounter assumption: which ability was dispelled, which add was controlled, how much damage was avoidable, or which route was skipped. Without that context, “utility” becomes an unsupported conversion into DPS.

When the simulator cannot represent the value

If the profile cannot model a route, coordination requirement, threat interaction, or player decision, say so and keep the result qualitative. A defensive racial can be raid-saving even when its damage contribution is zero, but the simulator should not be credited with a death prevented unless the encounter model actually records it.

Understand scale factors, deltas, and confidence

SimulationCraft scale factors compare output by adding a controlled delta and measuring the change. The documentation warns that fighting variance can obscure small differences. Use a sufficiently large delta, paired conditions, more iterations, and repeat runs when the result is close.

Set and report the confidence interval

The confidence option controls the error interval. With confidence=0.97, the true DPS is expected to lie within the reported interval with 97% probability. Record that setting beside the result; an interval without its confidence level is incomplete.

Decide whether a difference is real

  • If one race’s interval is clearly above the other’s, describe the size and conditions of the advantage.
  • If the intervals overlap substantially, call the result effectively tied for that scenario.
  • If the means differ but repeated runs move the order around, increase iterations or use paired conditions.
  • If a utility event changes the outcome, report that event separately rather than forcing it into the DPS interval.

Use a comparison table that preserves the scenario

Place the exact patch and encounter above every result table. A useful report separates the axes readers commonly confuse:

Axis Output to record Decision question
Sustained single-target DPS Mean DPS and error interval Is the difference larger than simulation noise?
Burst-window alignment Damage during the defined window, casts, and cooldown overlap Does the racial land during the mechanic that matters?
Healing throughput HPS, effective healing, overhealing, and resource use Does it increase useful healing without creating unsustainable cost?
Defensive value Uptime, damage avoided, health after the hit, and deaths Does it prevent or soften a defined mechanic?
Control or dispel utility Successful events and timing Does it remove a failure point in this encounter?
Movement or encounter fit Downtime, skips, repositioning, and route assumptions Does the effect change how the fight is executed?
Result size versus error Difference between means compared with both intervals Is the apparent winner distinguishable?

What the sim does not capture by itself

A profile cannot automatically know how cleanly a player executes a mechanic, how a raid coordinates an immunity, whether a group chooses a different route, or whether a crowd-control opportunity is worth more than damage in a specific progression pull. It also cannot turn an unmodeled social or strategic benefit into a defensible number.

  • Player reaction time and movement mistakes.
  • Raid-leader assignments and coordination quality.
  • Routing choices, skips, and pulls not represented in the encounter script.
  • Whether a group has enough other interrupts, dispels, or defensive cooldowns.
  • Progression value from learning a mechanic versus farm value from faster damage.

Use the report for modeled output and an encounter explanation for everything outside the model.

Common failure modes and fixes

The racial action never appears

Check the action name, race implementation, cooldown condition, and action-list order. Re-run and confirm the cast in the report. An unexecuted action means the profile did not test the intended racial.

The healer report looks like a DPS report

Verify role=heal, then inspect HPS, effective healing, overhealing, resources, and deaths. The headline label can remain DPS-oriented even when the profile produced healing statistics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A tiny DPS lead changes between runs

Increase iterations, use paired conditions, apply a larger controlled delta for scale-factor work, and repeat the runs. Treat overlapping intervals as an effective tie rather than publishing a precise ranking.

A defensive racial has no DPS value

That may be correct. Test the defined defensive event—damage avoided, uptime, or deaths—under an encounter that actually contains the relevant bleed, poison, disease, or physical hit. Do not assign a universal DPS conversion.

Two profiles are not truly comparable

Compare the profile text line by line. Differences in talents, gear, target count, fight length, player skill, patch, or iteration count invalidate the racial comparison. Recreate both from one frozen baseline.

A publication-ready reporting checklist

  1. State expansion, patch or build, region, simulator release or commit, and profile-import date.
  2. Name the encounter, target count, fight style, duration, movement, and iteration count.
  3. Show the role and verify that the generated profile matches the specialization.
  4. List the race field and every active racial action tested.
  5. Confirm passive effects in buffs, gains, or spell breakdowns.
  6. Report DPS and HPS separately, with effective healing and overhealing where relevant.
  7. Give the confidence setting and error intervals.
  8. Mark overlapping results as effectively tied.
  9. Describe utility through concrete events and encounter assumptions.
  10. Add a short note naming player execution, routing, coordination, and unmodeled utility that remain outside the profile.

Bottom line for choosing a race

Run the same controlled profile for every candidate race, verify that active and passive effects actually execute, and judge the result on the axis that matters to your encounter. Use DPS for damage, HPS and survival outcomes for healing, and event counts or deaths for utility. A statistically indistinguishable damage result is not a reason to ignore a defensive or control advantage, and a simulated damage lead is not a guarantee of better performance when the fight rewards a different tool.
