Group Words How they connect
Ornate, as prose EXCESSIVE, FLOWERY, MELODRAMATIC, PURPLE Each can describe writing that is overly elaborate or embellished.
Create COIN, FASHION, HATCH, MAKE UP Each can mean to make or devise something.
Things with stems CHERRY, FLOWER, MUSICAL NOTE, WINE GLASS Each has a stem.
Comprised of solfège (Do-Re-Mi) LAREDO, MIRE, RETIRE, SOLTI Each contains syllables from the solfège sequence.

Why the solfège group works

The trickiest connection is the word-pattern group. Solfège is the familiar sequence of sung note syllables: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti. The four answers contain combinations of those syllables: LAREDO has la, re, and do; MIRE has mi and re; RETIRE has re, ti, and re; and SOLTI has sol and ti. The words need not be musical terms themselves—the shared feature is the syllables embedded in their spelling.

How to distinguish the other groups

“Ornate, as prose” points to an overdone or embellished style: purple prose, flowery language, and melodramatic or excessive writing. “Create” groups verbs that mean to make or devise: coin, fashion, hatch, and make up. The stem category is literal, bringing together a cherry, a flower, a musical note, and a wine glass.
