To sort files by size in Windows, open the location in File Explorer, choose View > Details, then select Sort by > Size or click the Size column. Click the column again to reverse the order. Windows does not normally calculate the combined size of every file inside each parent folder, so a standard File Explorer window cannot reliably rank folders by total contents. For month-based organization, sort or filter by Date modified (or Date created when that is the date you need), and use Group by > Date modified where your Windows build offers it.
The labels and grouping choices can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases, folder templates, and open/save dialogs. The instructions below use the built-in File Explorer controls and explain what to do when a folder’s size is blank or when a month view is unavailable.

How do I sort files by size in File Explorer?
Details view exposes a Size column that File Explorer can sort without scanning the contents of other folders. This is the dependable built-in method for putting the largest individual files first.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the folder or drive you want to examine.
- Select View > Details. The file list changes to columns such as Name, Date modified, Type, and Size.
- Right-click an empty area of the file list and choose Sort by > Size, or click the Size column heading.
- Click Size again to switch between smallest-first and largest-first order. The direction indicator on the heading shows which order is active.
This operation ranks files whose sizes are recorded by Windows. A parent folder can still show a blank or unavailable Size value; that is normal and does not mean the folder is empty.

How do I show the largest files first?
After selecting Sort by > Size, click the Size heading until the largest values appear at the top. Microsoft’s storage guidance uses this Details-view workflow when locating files that can be moved to external storage, such as a USB drive or SD card, during a space cleanup.
Can I sort by size without changing to Details view?
You can open the context menu and choose Sort by > Size in other layouts, but Details view makes the values and direction visible. If the Size command is missing, switch to Details first; the available commands also depend on whether the location is a normal folder, a search result, or a special library.
Why can’t File Explorer sort parent folders by their total size?
File Explorer normally does not calculate a recursive total for every folder shown in a directory. To produce that value, Windows would have to walk through every nested file and subfolder, which can consume processor and disk resources in large trees. Microsoft’s Ask the Performance Team describes this behavior as intentional: “The simple answer is that the behavior is by design.”
As a result, the built-in Size sort is reliable for individual files but not for ranking parent folders by the sum of their descendants. A folder containing many gigabytes may have no number in the Size column.

How can I check one folder’s total?
- Right-click the folder whose contents you want to measure.
- Choose Properties.
- Wait while Windows calculates the folder’s size and the number of files and subfolders.
Properties measures that folder separately; it does not create a sortable total for all neighboring folders. For a large directory tree, calculation may take time because Windows must enumerate the contents.
What if I need a ranked list of folder totals?
A file manager that explicitly calculates folder sizes can provide that view, but it is an optional alternative rather than a File Explorer feature. Check that any third-party utility supports your current Windows release and understand that calculating many totals can still require substantial disk activity. Do not assume a blank Size cell is an error or install a tool solely to repair it.

Windows has no single universal “sort by month” command. Use a date property, then optionally filter or group the results into month-oriented buckets.
- Open the target location in File Explorer.
- Choose View > Details if you want the date columns visible.
- Select Sort by > Date modified. If the question concerns when an item was created, choose Date created instead.
- Click the date column again to reverse ascending and descending order. Ascending places older dates first; descending places more recent dates first.
- Open the date filter arrow, when it is shown, and choose a preset, Select a date, or a date range that covers the month or period you need.
- On Windows builds that expose the command, use Group by > Date modified. The resulting buckets can be displayed as month-oriented groups rather than one uninterrupted list.
Filter availability depends on the current view and location. If a date arrow or grouping command is absent, sorting by the date column still provides chronological order, and a search can narrow the period.

How do I isolate a particular calendar month?
Use the date filter’s Select a date or date-range option and enter the first and last day of the month. A range is more precise than relying on a visual group heading, especially when the folder contains items from several years with the same month name. After filtering, you can sort the remaining results by Name, Size, or Date modified.
What does “Date modified” actually mean?
Date modified is the last content or metadata change recorded by Windows. It is not necessarily the date an item was first created, downloaded, photographed, or moved into the folder. A file copied or edited later can therefore appear in a newer month even if its original content is older.

How do I make a size or month sort persist?
File Explorer can apply a view and its sort order to folders that use the same folder template. It cannot guarantee one setting for every specialized folder or every open/save dialog.

- Open a representative folder and set the layout, columns, sort, and grouping you want.
- Open Folder Options from File Explorer’s View controls.
- Open the View tab.
- Select Apply to Folders, then confirm the change.
Windows uses templates such as Documents, Pictures, Music, Video, and General Items. Applying a Details-and-Size view in one template does not necessarily change a folder assigned to another template. Check the actual location where your work occurs, including any application’s open or save dialog, because those specialized views may retain their own settings.
How can Search find large files or files from a month?
Search is useful when the files are spread across subfolders or when sorting one directory is not enough. In File Explorer, open the drive or parent location, click the search box, and use the available Date modified and Size filters. You can then sort the result list by Size or Date modified.
What size ranges does the Size filter provide?
| Filter label | Reported range | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Empty | 0 bytes | Finding zero-byte files |
| Tiny | 0–16 KB | Very small configuration or text files |
| Small | 16 KB–1 MB | Documents and small assets |
| Medium | 1–128 MB | Typical photos, installers, or project files |
| Large | 128 MB–1 GB | Large media and application packages |
| Huge | 1–4 GB | High-resolution media, disk images, or archives |
| Gigantic | More than 4 GB | Very large archives, videos, and virtual disks |
The displayed boundaries can overlap at their endpoints in the menu, so treat the labels as practical bands rather than laboratory-grade categories. Search results can include files from nested folders; inspect the full path before moving or deleting anything.
How do I combine a date and size search?
First narrow the location with Date modified or a date range, then add a Size filter such as Large, Huge, or Gigantic. Sort the resulting list by Size to see the biggest qualifying files, or by Date modified to review the newest changes first. This avoids manually opening every subfolder when your goal is to find space-consuming files from a particular period.

Which Windows method should I use?
| Your goal | Built-in method | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Rank individual files by bytes | Details view, then Sort by > Size | Does not total the contents of parent folders |
| Measure one folder | Folder Properties | Each folder must be measured separately |
| See the newest or oldest changes | Sort by Date modified | The timestamp is not necessarily the creation date |
| Group items into month-like buckets | Group by > Date modified, where available | Not exposed in every Windows build or location |
| Find large files across subfolders | Search with Size filters | Verify paths before moving or removing results |
What should I check when the commands are missing?
- No Size column: switch to View > Details; some special locations expose a reduced set of columns.
- Sort direction looks wrong: click the active column heading a second time. The first click may place the smallest or oldest item at the top, depending on the previous state.
- Folders have blank sizes: use Properties for an individual total. This is expected behavior, not evidence of corrupted metadata.
- No month grouping: use Date modified sorting and a date-range filter. Grouping is dependent on the Windows release, view, and folder template.
- Settings revert elsewhere: repeat the view setup for the relevant template and use Apply to Folders; specialized dialogs may keep separate preferences.
How should I use the results for storage cleanup?
Sorting is an inspection step, not a deletion command. Open a file or confirm its path and purpose before removing it. For personal files that are no longer needed on the internal drive, Microsoft specifically points to external storage such as a USB drive or SD card as a way to free space; verify the copy before deleting the original and keep an additional backup for irreplaceable data.
Do not delete operating-system, application, or unknown files merely because they are large or old. A month filter can reveal stale downloads or project exports, but the date alone does not establish that an item is safe to remove.

Does Windows 10 work differently from Windows 11 for these tasks?
The core controls—Details view, Size or date sorting, Search filters, and Folder Options—exist in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Their placement, context-menu wording, and availability of date grouping can vary by release and by the type of folder. When a documented label is absent, use the equivalent column heading or the right-click Sort by menu rather than assuming the feature has been removed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will sorting by Size or Date modified change my files?
No. Sorting, filtering, and grouping only change how File Explorer presents the items. They do not rewrite file contents, timestamps, names, or locations.
Why do two copies of the same file show different dates?
Windows records metadata for each copy in its current location. Copying, extracting, editing, or synchronizing an item can produce a different creation or modified timestamp, so compare the full path and both date columns.
Can a network or cloud folder show the same size and date controls?
Often, but the provider, connection state, and folder type can limit which columns or filters appear. If values are unavailable, download or open the item’s Properties and check the service’s own metadata.
Is a large file always the best one to move off the drive?
Not necessarily. Check whether an application depends on it, whether it is already backed up, and whether moving it will break a project or library path. Size is a way to prioritize inspection, not a safety judgment.
