You cannot reliably authenticate a MIG Switch or check whether one is “unbanned” from its listing, packaging, or seller claims. Nintendo identifies MIG Switch and MIG Flash as circumvention devices, not authorized Nintendo accessories, and the official materials reviewed provide no MIG-specific serial lookup or ban-status checker. If you want genuine Switch games, use Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s website.
First, distinguish a counterfeit from an unauthorized device
“Counterfeit” and “unauthorized” are not interchangeable. Nintendo UK calls MIG Switch and MIG Flash “piracy cartridges” and classifies them as circumvention devices. That classification does not establish whether a particular MIG listing is counterfeit, nor does it mean every MIG device is a counterfeit Nintendo product. Nintendo’s UK legal information and Americas support FAQ do not provide a MIG-specific authentication method.

So if a seller advertises a MIG Switch, MIG Flash, or MIG Dumper as “official,” “Nintendo-approved,” or guaranteed safe, treat that as an unsupported seller claim—not proof of authorization. A claim that the device is for personal backups does not change Nintendo’s stated classification. Nintendo’s 2024 complaint alleges that MIG Switch can play unauthorized game copies stored on microSD and that MIG Dumper copies data from genuine cartridges; those are allegations in a complaint, not a court finding. What warning signs can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo’s general counterfeit guidance points to warning signs for Nintendo products: a price far below usual or recommended levels, missing packaging or manuals, and blurred, discolored, faded, or poor-quality packaging print. These are reasons for caution, not a definitive test—and Nintendo does not present them as a MIG authentication checklist. Nintendo of America support FAQ

- Price: An unusually low price can be a warning sign for a Nintendo product, but price alone cannot prove that a MIG device is counterfeit or safe.
- Packaging and print: Missing materials or poor printing may warrant caution about a product listing. Good-looking packaging does not establish that a MIG device is authorized or that it will avoid console restrictions.
- Seller assurances: A warranty, successful boot, online listing, or lack of reported problems does not establish a device’s ban status.
- Photos and returns: Ask for clear photos of the item and packaging, the seller’s identity, and the applicable return terms. These are prudent buying checks, not Nintendo-certified verification steps.
Can you check whether a MIG Switch is banned?
No MIG-specific status checker is described in the official Nintendo materials reviewed. They provide no MIG serial-number lookup, authorized MIG reseller list, or procedure to determine whether an individual unit—or a console—is banned. Do not treat a seller’s “unbanned” label or a device that appears to work as confirmation.
Risks and legal context depend on where you are
Nintendo UK says unauthorized devices may damage products without warranty coverage, reduce functionality such as online play, or leave a console unable to work after network updates. These are possible risks Nintendo identifies, not guaranteed outcomes for every device or console. Its statement that importing, marketing, selling, or distributing circumvention products is illegal is Nintendo’s description on its UK legal page; it should not be read as a universal legal ruling for every country.

Enforcement reporting is also geographically specific. GamesRadar+ reported on September 11, 2026, citing a Nintendo statement, that the District Court of The Hague ordered one retailer to stop offering MIG Switch cards and dumpers in the Netherlands. That report concerns one retailer and one Dutch case; it does not establish that MIG Switch is banned everywhere. GamesRadar+ report, September 11, 2026

Nintendo’s Americas FAQ identifies Nintendo eShop and Nintendo’s website as channels for genuine Nintendo games. If your goal is to buy Switch games, choose those official channels rather than relying on an unauthenticated MIG listing.
