How to Build a Gaming PC for Upcoming Open-World Games

Choose a gaming PC by target resolution, frame rate, settings, and budget. Published Cyberpunk 2077 and Starfield requirements offer useful reference points—but not a guaranteed spec for future games.

Start with the games, resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, and budget you actually want—not a rumored specification for an unreleased port. Then choose a graphics card and processor that suit that target, check the games’ published requirements, and verify that every part fits and works with the rest of the system. Requirements for released games are useful reference points, but they cannot guarantee how an upcoming game will run.

Decide what your PC should do before choosing parts

“A gaming PC” is not a specific performance target. Write down the games you plan to play, the resolution of your monitor, the frame rate you want, whether ray tracing or high graphics presets matter, and your total budget. Those choices affect the graphics card, processor, memory, storage, power supply, and cooling you should consider.

  • Resolution: Plan around the display you own or intend to buy. A target at 2160p (4K) is not equivalent to one at 1080p; the Cyberpunk 2077 requirements, for example, distinguish 1080p and 2160p targets.
  • Frame rate and settings: Decide whether you value a higher frame rate, more visual detail, ray tracing, or a balance. A game’s requirements for one preset do not establish performance at another.
  • Budget: Include the whole computer, not just the graphics card. Leave room for a suitable power supply, storage, case, cooling, and any other parts the build needs.
  • Games: Use current official requirements for released games you care about as reference points. Do not treat one game’s requirement as a specification for every open-world game.

For example, CD PROJEKT RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 requirements distinguish low 1080p at 30 FPS, high 1080p at 60 FPS, ultra 2160p at 60 FPS, and separate ray-tracing targets. The hardware requirements vary across those targets; “Cyberpunk-ready” without a resolution and settings target is not a precise build specification.

Use released games as reference points, not forecasts

Official requirements show what a publisher lists for a particular game and target. They do not promise that a similarly demanding game will need the same hardware, or that a listed PC will deliver the same result in another title.

Game and source Published reference points What to take from them
Cyberpunk 2077, including Phantom Liberty from Update 2.0; CD PROJEKT RED Support requirements page, accessed October 7, 2026 Separate targets include low 1080p/30 FPS, high 1080p/60 FPS, ultra 2160p/60 FPS, and ray-tracing targets. Across the listed targets, requirements span 12–24 GB RAM and 6–16 GB VRAM; storage is SSD or NVMe according to target. The target matters: the publisher’s requirements differ by resolution and graphics mode, including ray tracing. The ranges are specific to this game and are not a universal threshold for future releases.
Starfield; Bethesda Support’s French-language PC requirements page, accessed October 7, 2026 Minimum: Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K, 16 GB RAM, Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, DirectX 12, and 125 GB disk space with an SSD required. Recommended: Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K, 16 GB RAM, Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 2080, DirectX 12, and the same capacity and SSD requirement. These are Starfield-specific minimum and recommended tiers. They are useful context for that game, not a promise about performance in other games or a prescription for every open-world PC.

CD PROJEKT RED’s 2023 explanation says its revised Cyberpunk 2077 requirements represented specific 1080p or 4K presets, with the minimum tier intended for 1080p at low settings and an average 30 FPS. It also notes that its FPS figures came from internal testing and that performance varies with hardware, software, settings, and output resolution. Read a publisher’s listed target in that context rather than treating it as an independent benchmark.

Choose the graphics card around your target

The GPU is usually the part that most directly determines which resolution and graphics settings are practical. Compare candidate cards using measured performance in the games and at the resolution and settings you care about. Also check VRAM, ray-tracing performance, relevant upscaling or frame-generation support, power draw, connectors, card dimensions, price, warranty, and availability. No performance ranking or current street-price comparison is established here, so do not infer that a named example is the best value.

The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is one concrete example for understanding specifications, not a required build choice. NVIDIA lists 16 GB GDDR7 and 300 W total graphics power for the reference card. Its page lists 750 W required system power for a reference PC configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X. That 750 W figure is NVIDIA’s guidance for the stated reference configuration, not a universal power-supply rule or a requirement that applies unchanged to every add-in-board card and complete PC. Check the exact retail card’s dimensions, connectors, and power guidance before buying.

Pair the GPU with a suitable CPU

Do not spend so heavily on the processor that the graphics card no longer matches your target. But do not assume the GPU is the only constraint: CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as both graphics- and processor-intensive. Compare CPUs using gaming performance in relevant titles, platform and memory compatibility, price, power and cooling needs, and the upgrade path—not core count alone.

AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as an eight-core, 16-thread AM5 processor with DDR5 support. AMD’s June 2026 blog says support for Socket AM5 is planned through 2029. Those details can help when checking platform compatibility and AMD’s stated upgrade-support plan; they do not establish that this processor is necessary for upcoming games or the best-value choice for your budget.

Plan memory and storage from actual requirements

Memory

Check the requirements for your chosen games and consider what you run alongside them. The cited Starfield tiers list 16 GB RAM, while Cyberpunk 2077’s listed targets span 12–24 GB. These are game-specific figures; capacity beyond them is a practical decision based on your multitasking and installed games, not a proven minimum for all future releases. Confirm that the memory type is supported by your chosen motherboard and processor.

Storage

Both cited Starfield tiers require an SSD, and Cyberpunk 2077’s listed storage requirement varies by target between SSD and NVMe. CD PROJEKT RED wrote in its June 11, 2023 requirements update: “SSDs offer faster loading times, improved streaming, and better overall performance when compared to HDDs.” Choose capacity for the games you expect to keep installed, and check the game’s current requirement rather than assuming every title has the same storage needs.

Do not buy a speculative GTA VI PC specification

As of Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page reviewed on October 7, 2026, the listed release date is November 19, 2026, and the listed platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That page shows no PC platform or PC system requirements. It therefore does not support a specific PC release date, minimum or recommended PC build, or target benchmark for GTA VI.

If GTA VI is the main reason you are planning a PC, do not pay a premium for a parts list presented as its required specification. Build around games and display targets with published PC requirements, or wait for official PC information before making a purchase based on that game. Rockstar’s platform details may change, so check its official announcements when making a later decision.

A practical order for choosing your parts

  1. Set the target: Record your budget, monitor resolution, desired frame rate, preferred settings, and the games you will play.
  2. Collect game-specific requirements: Start with official pages for released games. Note the target and any separate ray-tracing requirements rather than copying a single component name out of context.
  3. Select a GPU tier: Use relevant measured game performance, VRAM, features, power, dimensions, price, and availability to narrow choices. Do not assign a performance claim to an unreleased game.
  4. Choose a compatible CPU platform: Balance processor performance and cost against the GPU and your games; then confirm socket, motherboard, memory generation, and cooling compatibility.
  5. Set memory and storage: Meet the requirements of the games you intend to play, allow for your own multitasking and library, and verify motherboard support.
  6. Validate the complete parts list: Check the exact GPU connectors and dimensions, case clearances, cooler fit, power-supply suitability for the whole system, and all platform compatibility before ordering.
  7. Revisit uncertain future-game needs: If a key game still has no official PC requirements, avoid treating rumor as a specification and make the decision when reliable information is available.
