Short answer: you cannot prove that a game asset was AI-generated by looking at it once or running a single detector. Treat visual anomalies as triage. For a defensible answer, preserve the original file, inspect signed provenance such as C2PA Content Credentials, check supported watermark signals, compare production evidence, read the developer or platform disclosure, and obtain qualified human review when the consequences matter.
Why visual inspection is not proof
Generative models can produce convincing concept art, textures, icons, character portraits, 3D references and promotional screenshots. At the same time, ordinary game production creates many of the defects people associate with AI: a texture may be tiled deliberately, a screenshot may be compressed, a shader may distort lettering, and a human artist may make an inconsistent hand or shadow. Stock art, procedural generation, photogrammetry, kitbashing and aggressive post-processing can look similar to generated imagery.

That is why a detector result or a suspicious detail should be treated as one signal in an investigation, not as an authorship verdict. A negative result means only that the particular tool did not find a supported signal. It does not establish human authorship. There is no authoritative percentage showing how much released video-game art is AI-generated, so broad claims about industry prevalence are not justified.

When signals conflict, compare their strength, coverage, tamper resistance, recency, context and review quality. A signed manifest from the original export generally deserves more weight than a visual suspicion raised by a recompressed screenshot.

A defensible checking workflow
1. Preserve the original asset
Start with the file as exported by the developer or captured before a social network, messaging app or image host recompresses it. Save the download without opening it in an editor, calculate a hash if you need to document the evidence, and record where and when you obtained it. Keep a separate working copy for zooming and annotation.
Cropping, resizing, sharpening, format conversion and screenshotting can remove metadata and weaken invisible watermark signals. If all you have is a reposted JPEG, label it as a lower-quality copy before drawing conclusions. A screenshot of a game is evidence about what was displayed, not necessarily the original texture, model or promotional render.
2. Inspect Content Credentials and C2PA data
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) standard allows a file to carry a signed manifest. Microsoft Learn explains that a manifest can contain information about the “Content creator; Generation tools; Edit history; Creation timestamps.” Because the record is cryptographically signed, later tampering is easier to detect than with ordinary metadata.

Check whether the signature validates, which file bytes it covers, who signed it, what generation or editing tools are declared, and whether the chain ends at the original export or at a later copy. Record the manifest and validation result alongside the asset.

A valid manifest is strong provenance evidence, not a pixel-by-pixel authorship test. It can show that a declared tool participated in a workflow without proving that the entire image was generated from a prompt. Conversely, a missing manifest proves little: many applications do not create one, and routine publishing steps can remove it.
3. Check supported invisible watermarks
Some generators embed a signal intended to survive ordinary use. OpenAI documents Content Credentials together with SynthID for supported OpenAI image outputs. Its help documentation warns: “A watermark was degraded by compression, cropping, noise, edits, format conversion, or other transformations.” Run a vendor checker only when the asset and suspected generator fall within that checker’s supported scope.
A positive match can support a claim that a particular vendor’s output signal is present. It does not identify every possible generator, and it does not show whether a human substantially repainted, composited or animated the result. A “not detected” result is simply inconclusive, especially on a small, edited or recompressed image.
4. Examine the image at native resolution
Zooming far beyond the source resolution creates interpolation artifacts, so inspect at 100 percent first and then at a modest enlargement. Compare suspicious areas with the unaltered file and with other assets from the same game. The following clues justify follow-up questions:

- Lettering and symbols: inspect signage, UI text, logos, runes and serial numbers for malformed characters, inconsistent spacing or symbols that change within one word.
- Hands, faces and anatomy: look for fused fingers, impossible joints, asymmetrical pupils, earrings that merge into skin, or clothing that enters the body. These can also result from a tiny texture, a stylized design or a human mistake.
- Object joins: check where straps meet armor, handles meet tools, hair meets collars and cables enter machines. A plausible silhouette can hide impossible connections.
- Perspective and geometry: follow parallel edges, repeated windows and floor lines. A perspective error may be a deliberate surreal effect, a camera or shader issue, or a generated-image artifact.
- Shadows and lighting: trace each cast shadow back to a light source and compare highlights with the material. Multiple inconsistent light directions are a clue, not proof.
- Repeated texture motifs: look for identical faces, stones, scratches or foliage copied at suspicious intervals. Tiling is common in game textures, so compare the pattern with the UV layout before treating it as generation evidence.
- Material consistency: ask whether metal, glass, skin, cloth and rough surfaces respond consistently to light. A mismatch may come from a bad texture bake, a post-process effect or an AI-assisted image.
Save crops with their coordinates and keep your observations descriptive. “The third letter in the sign changes shape” is more useful than “this feels AI.”
5. Compare production evidence
For a consequential claim, request or examine the evidence that a normal production pipeline leaves behind. Depending on the project, that can include layered source files, revision history, work-in-progress exports, recorded creation sessions, concept sheets, texture atlases, UV layouts, model topology and in-game variants at different resolutions.
Compare the final asset with the concept and implementation. A 2D texture should make sense in its UV placement; a 3D model should have topology that supports the visible forms; an in-game variant should explain changes caused by level-of-detail systems or color grading. Consistent intermediate files strengthen a human-authored account, but they do not rule out AI assistance at one stage.

A developer or artist may be unable to share files because of contracts, security or trade secrets. Refusal, missing history or an inconsistent explanation is a reason to seek corroboration, not proof that AI was used.

6. Check disclosures and platform records
Read the game’s store page, credits, terms and public statements, then check the relevant platform policy. Disclosures can tell you how a platform defines and moderates AI content, but they are not a complete forensic history.
Epic said in 2025 that a creator uploaded “over 41,000+ AI-generated assets in a short timeframe” to Fab. Epic also said that misidentified Fab content violated its terms and announced a mandatory “Created with AI” selection together with plans for automated detection. That figure describes one reported upload episode, not the share of all game assets or all marketplace content.
Steam has an AI-content disclosure process. Roblox requires disclosure when players interact with generative AI and makes developers responsible for outputs from third-party systems. A missing disclosure can indicate a policy issue, an incomplete listing or a different definition of AI content; it is not, by itself, proof about a particular texture or model.
7. Escalate disputed cases to qualified human review
If the allegation could affect a person’s reputation, a game’s release, a contract or a moderation decision, preserve the evidence and ask for an independent review by someone familiar with game art pipelines. Provide the original file, manifest results, watermark checks, visual notes, production comparisons and a timeline. Ask the reviewer to state confidence, alternatives considered and what additional evidence would change the conclusion.

Wizards of the Coast says it keeps a “human in the loop” and may rerun tools, re-review art and contact the artist. Its published guidance also says, “We’re regularly evaluating resources we could use to help us detect generative AI.” Human review is not infallible either; the company notes that “Human beings are fallible, whether it’s a conglomerate of human beings or a single human being.” The appropriate conclusion may therefore be “evidence is insufficient,” rather than a forced yes or no.

Signed provenance versus ordinary EXIF
EXIF fields such as software, camera model or creation date are ordinary text values. They can be deleted or changed without cryptographic verification. Treat them as clues about a file’s handling, not proof of authorship.
C2PA manifests are different because signatures can reveal whether the covered record was altered. Still, a manifest describes the claims made by the signer and the operations recorded in that chain. It may start after an earlier unrecorded step, omit an intermediate tool or cover a derivative rather than the asset originally used in the game.

What a missing record means
Metadata can disappear when a developer exports a texture atlas, a build pipeline packs files, a platform creates a thumbnail or a social site recompresses a screenshot. A clean metadata panel is therefore not evidence that an asset was made by hand. Record the transformation history before interpreting the absence.
Common mistakes and better alternatives
- Mistake: treating one malformed finger as a verdict. Better: document the anomaly, compare the native file and seek provenance.
- Mistake: using a detector outside its supported model range. Better: identify which generators and signals the tool actually covers.
- Mistake: assuming a watermark survives every edit. Better: check for compression, cropping, noise, format conversion and repainting before relying on a negative result.
- Mistake: equating disclosure with complete history. Better: use platform statements as context and corroborate with production evidence.
- Mistake: publicly accusing an artist from a screenshot. Better: preserve the original, seek a qualified review and describe uncertainty precisely.
A practical decision rule
You can describe an asset as documented as AI-assisted or AI-generated when a valid provenance record, credible disclosure or reliable production testimony supports that description. You can describe it as suspected when visual or technical clues justify investigation but corroboration is missing. You should describe it as undetermined when the file is a derivative, signals conflict or the available tools do not cover the suspected generator.
Do not claim “human-made” merely because no detector found AI, and do not claim “AI-made” merely because an image contains familiar artifacts. The strongest answer combines original-file integrity, signed provenance, appropriately scoped watermark checks, production records, disclosure context and careful human judgment.
