You usually cannot prove an indie game demo used AI by looking at its art, listening to its voices, or reading its dialogue alone. Start with the developer’s disclosure and credits, then check original files for supported provenance signals such as C2PA Content Credentials or a provider watermark. Treat stylistic clues as prompts to investigate—not as proof—and remember that a missing signal does not establish human authorship.
What is the most reliable way to check a demo?
Use several kinds of evidence together: what the developer says, what the credits show, what supported provenance tools report about original files, and whether those details fit the content in the demo. No single clue establishes the complete history of an asset or how much AI contributed.

Check the game’s store page, developer FAQ, credits, and relevant developer posts. Record what types of content the statement covers and whether it describes content generated before release or while the game runs.
- Identify the specific asset. Note the demo build, scene, character, image, voice line, or passage that prompted your question. A broad impression about a whole game is harder to verify than a claim about a particular file or piece of content.
- Preserve the best available source. Use the original exported image or audio file, or the original text if available. A screenshot, screen recording, or compressed clip may have lost information that could help with provenance.
- Check for supported provenance. Use a C2PA-aware reader for an image or the relevant provider’s verifier for supported media. Record what the tool actually reports, including validation state and any issuer, model, or time shown.
- Compare independent context. Check whether the disclosure, credits, behind-the-scenes material, and available file evidence are consistent. If they are not, describe the discrepancy rather than choosing an unsupported explanation.
- State the result narrowly. For example: “The original file contains a valid credential identifying a supported tool,” or “The verifier found no supported signal.” Avoid turning either result into a claim about the entire game.
This approach reflects the way the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s 2024 overview treats transparency measures: provenance, labeling, watermarking, detection, testing, and auditing are complementary approaches, not one decisive test.
Where is the AI disclosure on a Steam game page?
Open the demo’s Steam store page and look for its AI-generated content disclosure or an equivalent developer statement. Steam’s Content Survey asks developers about generative AI used to create content that ships with a game and is consumed by players; Valve says much of that disclosure is shown on the store page so customers can understand the game’s AI use.

Read the description rather than treating the presence of a disclosure as a complete inventory. Steam distinguishes between:
- Pre-Generated content: content made during development and included in the game.
- Live-Generated content: content made while the game runs. Steam asks developers to describe the guardrails for this use.
Check whether the statement mentions artwork, sound, voices, music, narrative, dialogue, localization, store art, or only development assistance. Those distinctions matter: a statement about one category does not establish AI use in every other category. A developer might disclose generated concept art while saying nothing about voice lines, or describe live-generated dialogue without claiming that the game’s promotional images were generated. Compare the statement with the demo’s visible credits and content, but remember that the store-page entry is the developer’s claim, not an independent audit.
Save the wording and the date you saw it. Store pages can change as a demo is updated, and a disclosure for one build may not describe later content. Note whether the statement concerns assets shipped to players or merely tools used privately for brainstorming, coding, or other development assistance; Steam’s wording focuses on generative AI content that ships with the game and is consumed by players.
How can I tell if an indie game used AI art?
For an image, a valid provenance credential or a detected supported watermark is stronger evidence than an unusual visual style. If all you have is a screenshot or an image that has been resized, cropped, converted, or compressed, a missing signal tells you little.
Start with the best available image file
Prefer the original exported PNG, JPEG, or WebP over a screenshot taken from the game. OpenAI documents two distinct kinds of image signals: C2PA Content Credentials, which are signed metadata, and SynthID, an embedded watermark. Microsoft describes C2PA manifests as records that can include information such as creator, generation tools, edit history, and timestamps. A C2PA-aware reader or the relevant provider verifier may reveal information present in a supported file.
Keep the file unchanged while checking it, and retain a copy of the exact file you submitted. If an artist supplies several versions, check the earliest export as well as the final in-game asset. A valid credential can show that a named provider or tool generated or processed a file, but an editing step after that event may mean the shipped image is not identical to the original. Record the issuer, validation status, listed tool or model, and any generation or edit time instead of copying only a yes-or-no label.

Interpret a result according to what it actually identifies. A trusted, valid credential or detected supported watermark is evidence of a supported generation or processing event. It does not, by itself, tell you who supplied the prompt, who owns the resulting work, whether the game’s final image is unchanged from the file, or what share of the creative process involved AI.
Use visual details as leads, not verdicts
Mismatched lettering, inconsistent hands or reflections, repeated motifs, and broken perspective can justify a closer look. Other useful prompts include a background object that changes shape between frames, a costume detail that varies without a story reason, or texture patterns that repeat exactly where an artist would normally vary them. These observations are still only prompts. They can appear in human-made work, deliberate stylization, rushed production, or heavily edited images.

Compare several images from the same scene and from different parts of the demo. Look for file-level evidence where possible rather than treating a single odd hand or badly rendered sign as a verdict. A pattern across a set of assets may be a reason to ask a developer for clarification, but visual consistency or inconsistency still cannot establish the production method on its own. Do not infer that every asset came from the same workflow: a studio can combine hand-drawn sprites, licensed packs, procedural effects, and generated concept material.
Is this game’s voice acting AI-generated?
Listen to the original audio export if you can get it; a recording of a speaker playing the demo is weaker evidence. Supported audio can carry SynthID, according to OpenAI’s provenance documentation, and its verifier checks supported audio formats. The OpenAI Help Center says original files are preferable and that clips between 10 and 60 seconds generally produce the best results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen making a clip for checking, preserve the original encoding and note whether it came from a standalone voice file, a dialogue bundle, or a microphone recording of gameplay. A short excerpt may be useful for a verifier, but cutting a line can remove metadata or make it impossible to tell which file was used in the build. Keep the untrimmed original as well as any 10-to-60-second sample you submit.
Possible listening prompts include unusually uniform breath timing, unstable pronunciation of names, abrupt transitions between phonemes, or different lines sharing an identical emotional contour. You might also notice timing that never responds to punctuation or scene action. These observations can help you choose what to investigate, but they do not prove synthetic speech. Human performance, voice processing, looping, editing, and compression can produce similar effects, and a human actor can intentionally use a flat or highly controlled delivery.
When checking a line, compare it with the game’s credits, any casting notes, and the developer’s disclosure. Be precise about what you heard and in which scene. Do not claim that every voice in a demo is generated based on one suspicious line, or treat a natural-sounding performance as proof that a human actor recorded it. If the credits name a performer, that is contextual evidence of the developer’s claim, not a substitute for checking the audio’s provenance or understanding how much processing was applied.
Can you detect AI-written dialogue in a demo?
There is no dependable style test in this evidence that can prove a passage was written by an AI system. Look for a disclosure or provenance trail first, then use writing patterns only as prompts to compare passages and check the credits.
Repetitive sentence shapes, generic scene transitions, sudden shifts in character voice, continuity errors, and literal or culturally odd localization may be worth reviewing. Other prompts include a character explaining information that another character just established, idioms that sound translated word-for-word, or a choice of terminology that changes between menus and dialogue. They can also result from human drafting, translation tools, editing, rushed localization, or other parts of the writing process. One awkward line—or even several—is not a reliable basis for attributing authorship.
Read multiple passages from the same character and compare them with the script, subtitles, item descriptions, and localization in another scene. A detector label without a documented provenance trail does not identify a model or establish who wrote the text. OpenAI says text verification is restricted to approved organizations. It also warns that substantial rewriting, paraphrasing, translation, or short passages can make watermark detection unreliable. A prose detector’s label should therefore not be presented as proof about a game’s dialogue.

If the developer provides a statement, report what it says and which content it covers rather than extending the claim to unmentioned text. “AI-assisted writing” can describe many different workflows, from brainstorming to a generated draft that a writer substantially rewrote. Unless the developer or a supported record specifies the role, do not convert that broad phrase into a claim that the final script was written entirely by a model.
What should I record when checking a particular asset?
A short evidence log helps keep a later report tied to the right file and build. Capture the following before making a conclusion:

- The demo’s version or build number and the scene or asset in question.
- The relevant credits or developer statement, with enough context to show what content it covers.
- Whether you examined an original file, an in-game capture, or a re-encoded copy.
- The name of the provenance reader or verifier, its result, and any issuer, validation state, model, or generation time it displayed.
- Any mismatch between the file result and the developer’s description, stated as a mismatch rather than a conclusion about intent.
Also note the file format and whether it was cropped, resized, exported again, or stripped of metadata before checking. For audio, record the clip length and whether it is an original export or a recording of playback. For text, preserve the exact passage, language, and translation status. These details explain why two people might obtain different results from what they believe is the same asset.
Do not infer a person, prompt, ownership, or percentage of AI involvement from provenance fields unless the evidence explicitly establishes that fact. A credential may describe a supported event; it is not necessarily a complete record of every edit or decision that followed. Avoid publishing private files or personal information merely to demonstrate a result; ask the developer for a suitable original when the asset is not publicly available.
What does a positive or negative provenance result actually mean?
A positive result can support a limited claim about a supported provider or workflow. A negative result means only that the checker did not find the supported signal it looks for in the file submitted.
OpenAI’s documentation defines a not_detected result as the tool not finding supported signals in the uploaded file. It does not rule out generation by another company’s model, or a signal that was removed. OpenAI and Microsoft both describe limits that can affect what survives or can be checked: screenshots, cropping, resizing, format conversion, compression, and metadata stripping may remove evidence, while unsupported models and older outputs may never have included it.
A credential can also describe processing rather than initial generation. For example, a manifest might identify an editing tool or an edit history without proving that every visual element originated there. Conversely, a file with no manifest may have been generated by a tool that does not support C2PA or an embedded watermark. Treat the result as one layer in an evidence chain, not as a universal scanner for all models.
Nor does provenance settle broader questions. Microsoft says provenance does not determine whether content is true or false, and does not establish authorship, ownership, or trustworthiness. The OpenAI Help Center likewise says watermarks do not determine authorship, ownership, or legal responsibility. A detected mark is evidence about a supported generation or processing event—not a complete account of who made an asset or how much AI contributed.

How should I compare AI disclosures between two demos?
Compare the quality and specificity of the evidence, not just whether one page contains a disclosure and the other does not. A useful comparison separates four questions:
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Disclosure specificity | Does the statement name the affected content types and distinguish pre-generated content from live-generated content? |
| Provenance quality | Are original files available, and do supported readers report valid credentials or watermarks? |
| Corroboration | Do the credits and developer statements fit the available file evidence and the content in the demo? |
| Handling of uncertainty | Does the comparison distinguish a positive supported signal from an inconclusive absence of one? |
Ask the same questions of each demo. One developer may name art, voices, music, and localization separately, while another may use a broad “generative AI” label. That difference affects how much you can conclude, but it does not by itself prove that one project used more AI. Likewise, a credential available for one character portrait cannot be generalized to every portrait in the game unless the files and workflow support that conclusion.
Recommended Free Tools
A missing disclosure is not proof that a demo used no AI, just as a disclosure is not a third-party audit. A clear comparison says what each developer disclosed, what files or signals were actually checked, and what remains unknown. There is no authoritative, directly relevant prevalence figure established for AI-generated art, voices, or writing in indie game demos; avoid turning isolated examples into a percentage for the wider scene.
How should I phrase a report without overstating the evidence?
Describe the observation and its limits in the same sentence. That lets readers distinguish what a tool found from what you infer about the game.
- Supported positive signal: “The original image file contains a valid credential identifying a supported tool.”
- No supported signal: “The verifier did not detect a supported signal in the file I submitted.”
- Stylistic concern: “The image has inconsistent reflections; that prompted a closer check, but does not establish how it was made.”
- Developer statement: “The store-page disclosure says the game uses live-generated dialogue,” followed by the category and scope the statement actually names.
- Limited material: “This assessment used a screenshot rather than the original export, so metadata and watermark evidence may be unavailable.”
Avoid categorical wording such as “definitely AI” when the evidence is a visual quirk, vocal impression, detector label, or missing disclosure. If you cannot obtain original files, say that the check was limited to the material you could access. If the developer changes the disclosure or replaces an asset, date your observation and identify the build so readers can understand what was actually reviewed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What common mistakes undermine an AI-use check?
- Calling a missing mark proof of human work. Signals can be stripped, degraded, unsupported, or absent from older outputs.
- Checking a screenshot instead of the source. A screenshot, crop, re-encode, or compressed social-media copy may no longer carry the original credential or watermark.
- Expanding a narrow disclosure. A statement about concept art does not establish anything about voices, music, dialogue, or localization.
- Confusing generation with processing. A credential may identify an edit or transformation rather than every earlier step.
- Treating a provider result as a complete history. Provenance does not establish authorship, ownership, truth, legal responsibility, or the percentage of AI involvement.
- Generalizing from one asset. Indie teams often mix hand-made, licensed, procedural, and generated material in the same demo.
- Presenting style as detection. Odd hands, flat delivery, or repetitive prose are review prompts that can also arise from human work and production constraints.
What should a careful conclusion say?
A careful conclusion identifies the asset, the build, the material checked, and the strongest supported claim. It might say that a named original file carried a valid credential, that a verifier returned not_detected on a particular upload, or that a store-page disclosure covered pre-generated art but did not mention audio. It should also state what could not be checked.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This wording is more useful than a binary “AI” or “not AI” verdict. It gives players a reproducible trail, leaves room for mixed workflows, and avoids accusing a developer on the basis of evidence that cannot support that accusation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI-generated content mean the whole game was made by AI?
No. A disclosure can cover a specific type of shipped content, and its scope should not be expanded to the whole project. Report the categories the developer actually names.

Can an AI detector identify which model made a game asset?
Only a supported provenance signal that explicitly identifies a provider or tool can support that limited attribution. A generic detector result or a stylistic judgment does not identify a model.
Can I use a detected watermark to make a copyright claim?
A watermark does not establish authorship, ownership, or legal responsibility. It is not, by itself, a conclusion about whether a particular use was lawful.
Is there a reliable statistic for how many indie demos use AI content?
No authoritative, directly relevant prevalence statistic is established here. The NIST 2024 overview concerns technical approaches to transparency, not a survey of indie game demos.
Where can I find the AI information for a Steam demo?
Start on the demo’s Steam store page, then check the developer’s FAQ, credits, and posts. Steam’s disclosure may distinguish pre-generated content from live-generated content and may identify categories such as art, sound, narrative, or localization.
What does “not_detected” mean in a provenance checker?
It means the checker did not find a supported signal in the uploaded file. It does not rule out another provider, an unsupported model, or a signal removed by cropping, conversion, compression, or metadata stripping.
Can odd hands or robotic voices prove AI use?
No. Those are useful prompts for closer inspection, but human art, intentional stylization, processing, looping, compression, and rushed production can create similar effects.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does the original file matter so much?
Screenshots, recordings, crops, resizing, format conversion, compression, and metadata stripping can remove C2PA credentials or embedded watermarks. Original PNG, JPEG, WebP, or audio exports preserve the best chance of finding supported evidence.
The Bottom Line
Check the developer’s disclosure and credits, preserve the original asset, and use a supported C2PA or provider verifier where applicable. Treat a valid credential as limited evidence of a supported event, and treat a missing signal as inconclusive. Visual quirks, vocal impressions, and prose patterns can guide questions, but only a layered, build-specific record supports a responsible conclusion.
