What a Steam review score can—and cannot—tell you
Steam describes its Review Score as a categorization based on the percentage of positive reviews. That compresses many different experiences into one label; it does not explain why players recommend or reject the game, or whether their concerns apply to you. Read the reasons behind the recommendations and compare them with what you care about.
Steam’s review overview says, “Purchase is not required.” A player can review a product registered with a key obtained elsewhere or a free game, so a review need not come from a direct Steam purchase. That fact alone is not evidence of dishonesty. Steam’s review overview explains the review system and eligibility.
How to inspect a game’s reviews
- Check what score you’re looking at. Note whether the page shows an overall score, a recent score, or—if available—a score for your primary language. Steam’s 18 August 2025 announcement says qualifying games may show a language-specific score and a language breakdown. It describes thresholds of more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews overall and at least 200 in one language for a language-specific score; it also says 10 reviews are required to calculate an Overall Review Score. These are thresholds described in that announcement, not features or thresholds to assume for every game. You can restore the overall score through Store preferences. See Steam’s language-score announcement.
- Read concrete positive and negative reviews. Look for accounts of actual play—what worked, what failed, and under what circumstances. A review that explains performance, controls, content, or multiplayer experience is more useful to a buyer than a one-word reaction. Helpful sorting can surface informative posts, but a helpful vote does not certify a review’s accuracy or representativeness.
- Compare recent reviews with older ones. This matters especially for Early Access, live-service, or frequently updated games. A review may describe an earlier version rather than the one you would play now, so compare the review date with the game’s update history and look for current player reports. Steam has described recent reviews and a recent score as ways to reflect games that change over time. Valve’s 2016 announcement specified a recent score based on reviews from the preceding 30 days when enough reviews existed, and only after a game had been on Steam at least 45 days; treat those figures as the announcement’s historical system description, not a verified statement of current thresholds. See Valve’s 2016 explanation of review scores.
- Investigate abrupt timeline changes. A sharp rise in negative reviews or review volume is a reason to open reviews from that period, not to conclude that they are fake. Check what writers are discussing: gameplay, bugs, performance, pricing, monetization, a publisher decision, DRM, or another controversy. Decide whether the issue affects your own purchase. Valve defines review bombing as many reviews posted in a compressed period to lower a score, and says it may identify off-topic periods and exclude them from score calculations. The reviews themselves remain available to read, and users can choose settings that include those periods. See Valve’s explanation of review bombing and score changes and its account of how to understand review bombing.
- Use available filters to test the sample. Compare language and positive/negative slices, and inspect purchase-source options if the page provides them. If the displayed score is language-specific, use the breakdown to understand how sentiment differs. Valve’s 2017 documentation describes purchase-source filtering and historical differences in how some reviews counted toward scores. Those rules may change, so rely on the filters and scoring explanation currently shown on the game’s page rather than treating old policy as current. See Valve’s 2017 review-filtering announcement.
- Turn the evidence into your own decision. Ask whether the reports answer the questions that determine your purchase: Does the current version run acceptably on your hardware? Is it stable? Is the multiplayer population adequate in your region? Do monetization or DRM concerns affect you? Reviews can help investigate these trade-offs; a headline score cannot settle them automatically.
How to read suspicious-looking reviews without jumping to conclusions
Many reviews arrive in a short period
First identify the topic and timing of the posts. A surge may concern an external controversy rather than the game’s play experience, but it may also raise a genuine issue relevant to buyers. Valve’s off-topic handling is a platform judgment about whether a period should affect the score; it does not establish that every review in that period is fabricated or irrelevant.

The most-helpful reviews are jokes, memes, or one-liners
Helpfulness is a sorting signal, not a truth check. In its 14 August 2024 update, Valve said one-word reviews, ASCII art, playful memes, and in-jokes can be unhelpful to prospective buyers and may be sorted behind more informative reviews. Their presence does not prove manipulation; it means you may need to look further for reviews that explain the game. Valve stated that the system’s primary goal is to help potential players make informed decisions by understanding what other players like or dislike. Read the 2024 Steam helpfulness update.
A review is from someone who did not buy the game directly on Steam
That alone does not make the review untrustworthy: Steam allows reviews from people who registered a key acquired elsewhere and from players of free games. Consider what the review says and whether it describes a relevant experience. Purchase-source filters and scoring rules are platform context, not a verdict on an individual reviewer.

Reviews in different languages disagree
Language and region can shape players’ experiences, including translation, cultural references, and network conditions. If Steam offers a language breakdown or language-specific score, compare it with the overall picture rather than assuming either one applies equally to everyone.
A quick framework for weighing the evidence
| Compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Time | Recent reviews against older ones; reviews before, during, and after a sudden change | The game or the subject of discussion may have changed. |
| Language | Your language’s reviews and any language-specific score or breakdown Steam displays | Experiences and displayed sentiment can differ across languages or regions. |
| Relevance | Specific play experiences versus jokes, memes, one-word posts, or discussion of an external issue | A review can be real but still tell you little about whether you will enjoy or be able to play the game. |
| Source | Available purchase-source filters and Steam’s explanation of which reviews count toward a score | Acquisition route is context, not proof of credibility; check the current page because policies can change. |
| Text versus score | Whether the written reasons for recommendations align with the aggregate label—and with your priorities | The score summarizes sentiment; the text helps explain it. |
Use reviews as evidence, not a verdict
A useful review check is not a hunt for one suspicious signal. It is a comparison: read specific positive and negative accounts, check whether they describe the current game, investigate abrupt shifts, and see whether language or purchase-source slices change the picture. Then weigh the reported issues against the way you plan to play. No single score, review length, helpful-vote count, timeline spike, or purchase source can establish that a review is misleading by itself.
