They use separate systems. The clearest overwrite warning applies to Rockstar’s GTA Online profile-migration flow: choosing a new character there overwrites the existing Online character slot. Story Mode save options vary by platform and edition, so check your version’s save menu before replacing or deleting anything.
Story Mode and GTA Online are different
In Story Mode, you play as Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, switching between the three protagonists. GTA Online instead uses a custom character. An Online character or profile migration is not a fresh Story Mode save. The distinction is also reflected in the legacy Xbox-hosted GTA V manual, which describes the Story Mode protagonists and Online character separately.

Starting another Story Mode playthrough
There is no verified, universal set of save-slot steps for every current GTA V platform and edition in the official guidance covered here. Menu labels and save behavior can vary, so do not assume a sequence from another console or version is safe for your existing save.
- Open your version’s in-game save/load menu and inspect the available save slots before starting or saving over progress.
- Read any confirmation prompt carefully. Cancel if it says the selected save will be overwritten or deleted and you do not want that.
- Do not delete console or cloud save data as a workaround; the available guidance does not establish that as a safe way to create an independent playthrough.
If you need exact button-by-button steps, use a current official manual or support page for your platform and edition. Without that detail, a more specific sequence could put the existing save at risk.

Migrating GTA Online from PS4 or Xbox One to a newer console
Rockstar supports migration from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S through the documented profile-migration flow. Its guidance does not support switching between console families or migrating a console profile to PC. Follow the prompts on the destination console:
- Choose Online from the landing page and follow the Migrate Profile screen. If you have already entered the game, open Pause Menu > Online > Migrate Profile.
- At Review Character, select your existing character if you want to continue with that character. Rockstar’s migration page, last updated February 24, 2026, warns: “Choosing to continue with a new character will overwrite the existing character slot.”
- Review the migration details and confirm only when the displayed profile and character are the ones you intend to move.
This flow is for migrating a GTA Online profile, not for making a separate Story Mode save or keeping two generations’ Online progress synchronized. Saving GTA Online progress before you exit
To help save progress since the last autosave, Rockstar advises pausing and choosing Return to Single Player when leaving GTA Online. Its progress-loss article, last updated May 2, 2024, says to pause the game and choose to return to Single Player. Avoid immediately powering off or quitting through the console’s system menus after purchases; those changes may not have saved yet. If progress appears missing, consult Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance for lost GTA Online progress.

In its March 4, 2022 PS5 launch guidance, PlayStation Blog said one uploaded Story Mode save could be stored per platform at a time and that uploaded saves remained downloadable for 90 days. Those statements described the upload service at that time; they should not be treated as current, universal rules for local saves on all platforms.
