You can check a Pokémon card without damaging it: compare it with the exact printing, inspect its back and printed details, check whether its texture and holographic finish match, and use a bright-light test as one clue. No single quick check proves a card is genuine. If the evidence is mixed—or the card may be valuable—ask a trading-card specialist to assess it rather than ripping it.
Start by identifying the exact card
Before judging a card, identify its language, set, collector number, rarity, and finish. Compare it with an official product image or a trusted reference for that specific printing. A card from a different era, language, or card type may legitimately look different, so a loosely similar card is a poor control.
Pokémon Support points readers to official product images and recommends having a local shop that specializes in trading cards evaluate a card when needed. Pokémon Support’s counterfeit-card guidance was updated May 26, 2026.
Compare the back and overall print
Place the card beside a trusted image or known genuine copy. Check the back’s colors, design placement, borders, and fine details, then look at the front’s alignment and print clarity. A mismatch is a reason to investigate further, not a verdict by itself; lighting, image quality, and printing differences can complicate a visual comparison.

Read the text and card details
- Check spelling, accent marks, and whether the font’s shape and weight look consistent with the reference.
- Compare the attack names and values, evolution information, set symbol, collector number, and copyright line.
- Make sure the details correspond to the same language and printing. A detail that differs from a card in another language or release is not enough on its own to establish counterfeiting.

Check the expected texture and holographic finish
Look at the card under angled light and compare its surface with the correct reference. Some modern full-art cards have distinct texture or holographic patterns; a finish that looks flat when the genuine version should have texture may be suspicious. Handle the card gently—do not scratch it or press hard to test the surface.

A smooth surface is not proof of a fake. Genuine cards vary by era, rarity, and card type, and many do not have the textured finish found on some modern cards. Try the bright-light check carefully
Hold the card toward a bright light without bending it. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through this way and calls the check useful. Treat it as a screening clue, not a standalone authentication test: a light result cannot settle every case, so weigh it alongside the print, details, and finish.

Do not use the rip test on a card you want to keep
Ripping a card is destructive and unnecessary for a first-pass check. Beckett discusses light and edge inspection as non-destructive alternatives; compare the card with a suitable genuine reference instead of tearing it. If you remain unsure, take it to a trading-card shop that offers evaluation.
Consider where the card came from
Purchase circumstances can raise or lower suspicion, but they do not authenticate an individual card. Pokémon Support warns that sealed packs offered dramatically below suggested retail price are a major red flag and says its highest reported instances of counterfeit sales originate from flea markets. The page gives no rate or count, so these warnings should be treated as qualitative risk signals—not proof about a particular card.

When to ask for expert help
If several checks conflict, or a mistaken decision could be costly, ask a local trading-card specialist to inspect the card. For more advanced work, PSA’s Certification Verification page and app can scan the barcode on an item already bearing PSA certification. That checks a certified item and its holder; it is not a service for authenticating an ungraded raw card. PSA’s 2025 Fraud Report also lists methods such as microscopic pattern alignment, which is beyond what a quick household check can establish.
