Godlike.Host offers hosted Assetto Corsa servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To start a race on an Assetto Corsa server, prepare the server’s car, track, and entry-list files, configure the session order and race length, make the host reachable on the required ports, then launch the race from either a self-hosted server or a managed panel. Drivers must install the same car, track, skin and required Content Manager Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) versions or checksum protection can remove them. The official dedicated server uses server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini; Content Manager can create and launch those settings, while a hosted panel exposes equivalent controls through a web interface.
What do you need before starting an Assetto Corsa race?
You need four things: a server route, matching content, a valid session configuration, and a reachable network connection. Decide first whether the event will run on the official acServer, through Content Manager, with AssettoServer, or on a managed hosting panel. The official executable is included in the game’s server folder. Content Manager is usually the simplest desktop path because it can build presets, pack the required configuration and launch the server. AssettoServer is a separate implementation aimed at freeroam communities, and hosted panels provide remote controls rather than requiring local port forwarding.

The official server and Content Manager workflows are described in the Assetto Corsa server overview. AssettoServer’s current documentation identifies version 0.0.55 in its introduction.
Which server route should you choose?
| Route | Best for | Main control | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
Official acServer |
Owners who want direct file and network control | server_cfg.ini, entry_list.ini, ports and rules |
Local networking, firewall and configuration troubleshooting are your responsibility |
| Content Manager | Beginners and desktop hosts | Visual preset creation, packing, launching and joining | Some server-management features may require the paid edition; check the current licence terms |
| AssettoServer 0.0.55 | Freeroam, AI traffic and dynamic-weather communities | Alternative executable and extra_cfg.yml features |
The project says race and qualifying sessions are experimental |
| Managed hosting panel | Communities that want remote starts and a web UI | Uploaded content, presets and Start controls | Recurring cost and provider-specific controls or terms |
Choose the official server when complete control and a local machine matter more than convenience. Choose Content Manager when the host is operating the server from a Windows desktop and wants visual setup. Choose AssettoServer for features built around freeroam; do not assume its race implementation has the same maturity as the official executable. A managed panel is practical when the host should not configure a home router or keep a personal PC online.

How do you prepare cars, tracks and the entry list?
Select one track layout and the cars
Pick one track layout and a defined car list before creating the event. The server must have every car and track file that clients will use, including the exact layout rather than merely another layout from the same circuit. Keep the maximum player count at or below the number of usable pit slots on that layout. A server that advertises more places than the track provides can fail to start or leave drivers unable to receive a grid position.

Keep server and client files identical
Checksum protection compares the content a driver presents with the content loaded by the server. A different mod revision, skin package, track build or required CSP version can produce a checksum kick even when the visible car and circuit names look correct. Distribute the same files and versions to every driver, and state any CSP requirement in the event instructions.
Build the entry list
The official server stores driver slots in entry_list.ini. Add the desired number of entries, assign the cars and, where appropriate, reserve specific slots for league drivers. The general server rules and session settings belong in server_cfg.ini. Content Manager can generate and pack these files from a server preset, reducing manual editing; hosts using the executable directly should validate both files before launch.
How do you configure the server name, passwords and capacity?
Set a recognisable server name, a player capacity that does not exceed the available pit slots, and the visibility mode required by the event. Public races normally leave lobby registration enabled; private leagues can use a driver password or another access restriction. Keep an administrator password even on a private event so server commands and configuration are not left unprotected.
AssettoServer’s beginner guide uses an eight-character administrator-password example. That example is a security baseline for the guide, not a universal password policy. Use a unique password rather than reusing an account password, and share a driver password only with the intended participants.
Set the capacity before inviting drivers. If you later add cars or switch to a layout with fewer pits, reduce the advertised capacity and regenerate the entry list instead of relying on drivers to discover the limit at join time.
How do you configure practice, qualifying and race sessions?
A conventional event enables Practice, Qualification and Race in that order. Each phase needs its own duration or limit, plus the transitions that determine when the next phase opens and when late joining stops. The session guide at Assetto Servers covers these controls and their interaction.
Practice
Use Practice when drivers need time to load the circuit, check setups or resolve missing-content problems before qualifying. Set a finite duration long enough for a driver to join and complete an installation check. If the event is intentionally short, disable Practice rather than leaving a phase that delays the race.

Qualification
Set the qualifying duration and decide whether drivers may join during that phase. A qualifying session gives the server a grid order; if the grid is random or fixed, configure that behavior in the server rules instead of assuming the client’s menu choice will override it.
Race
Choose either a lap-based race or a time-based race. A lap limit gives a predictable number of laps but can produce different elapsed times when cars are widely spaced. A time limit ends the event after the configured period and is useful for mixed classes or freeroam-style events. Set any initial delay, pit-lane or grid options, and the rule that determines when joining closes.
Joining and transitions
Decide whether drivers can join Practice only, Practice and Qualification, or the Race session as well. Closing entry at the start of the race prevents late arrivals from appearing on the grid, while allowing race-session joining can help a casual server but complicates scoring. State the policy in the event announcement so a driver does not interpret a closed join window as a server failure.
Which ports and firewall rules are required?
The default official-server ports documented by HolyMod are UDP 9600, TCP 9600 and HTTP 8081. Forward the same port numbers from the router to the computer running the server, allow the server executable through the operating-system firewall, and make sure another application is not already using those ports.
| Purpose | Default port | Protocol | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game traffic | 9600 | UDP | Router forwarding and firewall rule point to the server PC |
| Server communication | 9600 | TCP | The same port is permitted and not occupied by another service |
| HTTP service | 8081 | HTTP/TCP | Forward only if the selected server features require it |
These are defaults, not mandatory values. If a host changes a port in the configuration, the router rule, firewall rule and client connection must use the matching value. Restart the server after changing ports or replacing track and car content. Leave lobby registration enabled when the event should appear in the public browser; a newly started server can take a minute or two to appear.

A hosted panel’s Quick Race flow is the shortest route when the provider already has the server online and the required content uploaded. The labels differ slightly by provider, but the controls described in the BisectHosting Quick Race guide follow this sequence.
- Open the server’s control panel and choose Quick Race rather than a multi-session event template.
- Select the track and the exact layout that the uploaded server content provides.
- Select the available cars or car pack. Confirm that every invited driver has the same versions installed.
- Enter the qualifying time. Quick Race does not provide a Practice session before qualifying, so drivers must be ready to join as soon as the race cycle begins.
- Choose a race length based on laps or time, then set any delay or grid options exposed by the panel.
- Click Start Race. Wait for the panel to apply the preset and show the server as running before sending the join instructions.
- Have drivers select Join in Content Manager or find the server in the in-game browser. Give them the server name and password exactly as configured.
If the panel requires a restart after content or configuration changes, perform that restart before selecting Quick Race. Starting a preset against stale files is a common reason for a missing track, an invalid entry list or a checksum rejection.
How do you start a self-hosted race with acServer or Content Manager?
Using the official executable
- Place the selected track, layout and cars on the host PC and verify that their folders match the names referenced by the configuration.
- Edit
server_cfg.inifor the server name, passwords, capacity, lobby registration and session sequence. - Edit
entry_list.inifor the number of slots and the car assigned to each slot. - Confirm that the configured capacity does not exceed the track’s pit slots and that all session values are valid.
- Apply the router forwarding and firewall rules for the configured ports.
- Run the official server executable from the game’s
serverfolder and watch its console or log for configuration errors. - Search for the server from a separate client connection before announcing the event.
Using Content Manager
- Create a dedicated-server preset and choose the track, layout and car list.
- Set the server name, password, capacity and Practice, Qualification and Race values in the preset’s server controls.
- Use Content Manager’s packing or export function to generate the server files, then review the resulting entry list.
- Launch the preset and use the same Content Manager installation to join as a driver, or provide the server name to other participants.
- When changing content, stop the running server, update the preset, repack if required and launch it again.
The visual workflow does not remove the network requirements: a Content Manager preset still needs a reachable host, an allowed executable and matching client content.

How do drivers join without being kicked?
Drivers should install the exact car, track, skin and required CSP versions before clicking Join. They should close any older server session, restart Content Manager if it has cached a different mod version, and select the server’s supplied car rather than a similarly named local copy. A checksum kick is normally a content mismatch, not an indication that the password is wrong.

Do not enable Steam-ID administrator login while Steam Auth is disabled; the security settings must be internally consistent. The project’s beginner guide explains these requirements in its current setup sequence.
Send drivers the server name, password, track layout, car list, required mod versions and the expected session start time. For a Quick Race, emphasise that there is no Practice phase, so a driver who waits for a practice countdown can miss qualifying entirely.
How should you verify the race before inviting everyone?
Run a short rotation with one test driver or a second machine after applying the configuration. The goal is to verify the event path, not to measure performance.
- Confirm that the server appears in the browser after startup and remains listed for a minute or two.
- Join with the same car and track files intended for the event.
- Check that the password accepts the intended value and rejects an incorrect one.
- Observe Practice-to-Qualification and Qualification-to-Race transitions.
- Confirm that the configured lap or time limit ends the race and produces a results screen.
- Check that the advertised capacity matches the actual usable pit slots.
- Review the server console or log for invalid sections, missing files or port-binding errors.
Fix problems while the server is still empty. Changing a track, car or port after drivers have joined can leave some clients with stale content and produce avoidable checksum failures.

Port forwarding or firewall is blocking it
Verify UDP 9600, TCP 9600 and, where needed, HTTP 8081 on both the router and host firewall. The forwarding target must be the host computer’s current local IP address; a DHCP change can silently send traffic to the wrong machine.
Lobby registration is disabled
Public listings require the registration setting to remain enabled. Check the corresponding option in the server configuration or panel, save it, restart the server and allow a minute or two for the listing to propagate.
The server did not restart after a change
Stop and relaunch after port, track, car or entry-list changes. A panel can show the new values while the running process still uses its previous configuration until a restart is completed.

Why do drivers get a checksum kick?
The usual cause is a different file or version: a car update, track layout, skin, physics package or required CSP build. Compare the client’s installed folders with the host’s files, remove duplicate older versions, and reinstall the exact package distributed by the server owner. If the server uses a content patch, every driver must use the required patch version rather than merely enabling CSP in general.
Why will the server not start or accept connections?
Invalid configuration files
Read the server log or console for a malformed value, missing section or unknown car and track name. Rebuild the preset or compare the files with a known-good configuration, then start again with one track and one car before adding complexity.
Capacity exceeds available pits
Lower the player count or choose a layout with enough pit slots. The entry list and the advertised capacity must agree; otherwise the process can fail during startup or clients can be refused when all valid slots are occupied.
A port is already in use
Check whether another Assetto Corsa instance or unrelated service has bound the configured port. Stop the conflicting process or assign a different port, then update every forwarding, firewall and connection setting to match.

Is AssettoServer suitable for a conventional league race?
AssettoServer is useful when the community prioritises freeroam features, AI traffic or dynamic weather. Its maintainers describe it as a custom Assetto Corsa game server developed with freeroam in mind, and the current documentation lists version 0.0.55. The same documentation warns that Race and Qualification sessions are experimental and may need more testing.
For a points league that depends on predictable qualifying and race transitions, use the official server or a panel that exposes the official session controls unless the community has already validated its AssettoServer configuration. If AssettoServer is selected, test Steam Auth, admin permissions and the complete session cycle before publishing the event.
What is the trade-off between self-hosting and managed hosting?
| Decision | Self-hosted official server | Managed panel |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Install files, edit configuration, forward ports and allow the firewall | Upload content and choose settings in a web interface |
| Control | Direct access to executable, configuration and network settings | Controls depend on the provider’s panel and plan |
| Availability | Depends on the host PC, home connection and power | Runs on the provider’s infrastructure under its service terms |
| Cost pattern | No hosting subscription, but the host supplies hardware and bandwidth | Recurring hosting fee in exchange for remote management |
| Troubleshooting | Logs, router and firewall are under the owner’s control | Provider support can help with panel or machine issues, while content mismatches remain the owner’s responsibility |
Self-hosting is the better fit when the owner can maintain a Windows machine and wants unrestricted configuration access. A managed panel is the better fit when a league needs a server that can be started remotely and does not want drivers connecting through a home network.
Frequently asked questions
Can I start a race without Content Manager?
Yes. The official dedicated server can be run directly from the game’s server folder with manually maintained server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini files. Content Manager is a convenience layer for creating and launching those settings, not a requirement for the official executable.

Can I change the default 9600 port?
Yes, provided the new port is supported by the server configuration and forwarded consistently. Update the router, firewall and any join instructions together, then restart the server so the process binds to the new value.
Do all drivers need Custom Shaders Patch?
Only when the server’s cars, track or security settings require it. If an AssettoServer installation enables Steam Auth, its documentation specifies CSP 0.1.75 or newer and a minimum Content Manager version; a server that does not use those features may have different requirements.
What should I back up before changing a server?
Keep copies of the working server preset, server_cfg.ini, entry_list.ini, the exact mod versions and any AssettoServer extra_cfg.yml file. A dated backup lets the host restore a known-good event when a content update or configuration edit prevents startup.
