How to Stop Avast Popups and Tell Real Alerts From Scams

Avast popups come from four different places: an Avast app, your operating system, a website notification, or a fake webpage designed to look like Avast. The right fix depends on the source. In Windows Avast Antivirus and Avast Premium Security, open Menu > Settings > General > Notifications and set Pop-up notifications treatment to Silent mode. Website-generated messages require browser site-permission changes instead. If a browser tab demands an urgent payment, phone call, download, or “immediate” repair, treat it as scareware: do not click it, close the browser, scan the device, remove suspicious software, and secure any exposed accounts.

What are Avast popups, and where do they come from?

An Avast-branded message is not automatically an Avast security warning. Avast applications legitimately display notifications about application activity, product updates, warnings, alerts, and offers. A browser can also show notifications that a website was allowed to send, while a malicious page can imitate Avast’s colors, logo, and wording.

Source Where you usually see it Typical message type Safe response
Avast application Avast’s desktop or mobile interface Activity, update, warning, alert, or offer Change the product’s notification settings
Operating-system notification The desktop or device notification area Security status, update, or app alert Identify the app named in the notification, then adjust its settings
Website notification A browser notification or browser window Site message, advertisement, or alert Revoke the site’s notification permission and block browser pop-ups
Fake webpage alert Inside a browser tab or webpage Scareware claiming an infection or emergency Do not interact with it; close the browser and investigate

The visual design is not proof of authenticity. Scammers can copy antivirus branding, so the location and behavior of the message matter more than its logo.

How do I stop popups in Avast Antivirus or Avast Premium Security on Windows?

Use Avast’s notification treatment setting. This is the direct path for the Windows desktop versions of Avast Antivirus and Avast Premium Security.

  1. Open the Avast application.
  2. Choose Menu > Settings.
  3. Select General > Notifications.
  4. Under Pop-up notifications treatment, select Silent mode.

Avast describes Silent mode as disabling pop-ups, alerts, or messages. The setting changes how notifications are presented; it is not a request to uninstall the security product. Because product releases can change labels, look for the Notifications page and the Pop-up notifications treatment control if your wording differs slightly.

Before enabling it permanently, consider whether you rely on visible warnings during downloads or while troubleshooting. Silent mode is useful when a notification interrupts a game or full-screen application, but a quieter interface also means you are less likely to notice a routine warning. You can return to the same setting and choose a non-silent treatment when you want visible messages again.

How do I stop Avast One popups?

Avast One has two menu layouts. Both expose a Silent mode option, but the starting point depends on whether you have the newer or older Avast One interface.

New Avast One

  1. Open Avast One and open Settings.
  2. Open the General tab.
  3. Choose Notifications.
  4. Select Silent mode.

Old Avast One

  1. Open Account > Settings.
  2. Find Pop-up notifications treatment.
  3. Select Silent mode.

If you cannot find either route, check which Avast One layout is installed before changing unrelated privacy or protection settings. Menu names can move with releases, while the underlying control remains the notification treatment setting.

How do I stop Avast promotional offers without hiding security alerts?

Promotional messages are controlled separately from the general pop-up treatment. In supported Avast products, open the product’s Notifications or Privacy settings and untick the options that allow app-usage data to be shared for offers.

Those options govern offers for upgrades, other Avast products, or third-party products. They are not the same as Silent mode: Silent mode suppresses popups, alerts, or messages broadly, whereas the offer controls target marketing based on app-usage sharing. If your goal is to keep security-related messages while reducing sales prompts, inspect the privacy and notification choices for offer-sharing controls first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact labels vary by Avast product. Read each checkbox carefully before changing it, and record the original choices if you are adjusting several settings at once. If a message is clearly a threat warning rather than an offer, changing promotional preferences will not remove it.

How do I stop Avast browser notifications and pop-ups?

Messages generated by a website must be blocked in the browser, not in the Avast antivirus notification panel. Avast Secure Browser provides two separate controls: one for site notifications and one for pop-ups and redirects.

  1. Open Avast Secure Browser.
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings.
  3. Open Notifications and set it to Don’t allow sites to send notifications.
  4. Open Pop-ups and redirects and set it to Don’t allow sites to send pop-ups or redirects.

The first control addresses permission-based messages that can appear even when the original site is no longer open. The second addresses new windows, tabs, and redirects. Changing only one can leave the other type active, so use both when you want to suppress website-generated interruptions.

If you use a different browser, look for its site-permission area and revoke notification permission for the offending site. Do not grant permission again merely because a page claims that doing so will remove an infection; a webpage cannot prove the state of your device through a permission request.

What notification controls exist on macOS, Android, iOS, and other Avast products?

Avast’s support guidance covers Android, ChromeOS, iOS, Mac, and Windows, but the menu path is product-specific. Avast AntiTrack, Battery Saver, Cleanup, Driver Updater, SecureLine VPN, Avast Security, Avast One, and Secure Browser each expose their own notification switches.

  • Desktop products: open the Avast product’s Settings and look for Notifications, General, Privacy, or a product-specific alert section.
  • Mobile apps: use the app’s Settings > Notifications controls where available.
  • SecureLine VPN and Secure Browser: some alerts are controlled through the device’s operating-system notification settings rather than only inside the app.
  • Several Avast apps installed: identify which app is named in each message and change that app’s setting individually.

There is no single universal switch for every Avast product. A notification that continues after you change one app’s setting may be coming from another Avast app, the operating system, or a website permission.

Are Avast virus popups real or fake?

A warning displayed inside a browser tab or webpage is more likely to be fake than a notification issued by the operating system or trusted security software. Treat the following combination as a strong scam warning:

  • Urgent, threatening language that says you must act immediately.
  • A vague description of a threat instead of a specific detection shown in the installed security app.
  • Repeated popups that return as soon as you close them.
  • Suspicious links, misspelled Avast names, or an unfamiliar domain.
  • A browser screen that appears frozen or cannot be closed normally.
  • A demand to download a tool, call a phone number, provide payment, or pay for a “fix.”

A copied logo does not make a warning genuine. Luis Corrons, an Avast Security Evangelist, describes the tactic this way: “Posing as antivirus warnings, scareware notifications use social engineering fear tactics to convince people that their device is infected with malware and that they need to act immediately to fix the problem.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not call a number displayed by a scary page, install software it offers, or enter payment details. When possible, close the browser without clicking buttons inside the alert. If the page will not close, use the operating system’s normal force-close function rather than interacting with the page’s controls.

What should I do if I clicked a suspicious Avast-looking popup?

Act as though information may have been exposed, even if the page disappeared. The sequence below limits further interaction and gives you a practical recovery path.

  1. Force-close the browser. Do not continue clicking the alert to find a close button if the page is trapping you.
  2. Run a malware scan. Use the security software already installed on the device and review its result before downloading anything suggested by the popup.
  3. Remove suspicious downloads, apps, or extensions. Check items added around the time of the incident and uninstall anything you do not recognize.
  4. Clear browser history and cache. This removes stored browsing data associated with the page and can stop a page from reopening through a stale session.
  5. Change exposed passwords. Prioritize accounts whose credentials may have been entered or visible while the popup was active.
  6. Enable two-factor authentication. Turn it on for affected accounts where the service supports it.
  7. Monitor accounts. Look for unfamiliar sign-ins, password-reset messages, purchases, or other activity after the incident.

Do not assume that closing the tab proves the device is clean. The scan, software review, password changes, and account monitoring address different possible consequences.

Why do Avast popups keep returning after I change a setting?

Persistent messages usually indicate that the setting you changed does not control the source producing the message. Use the message’s location and wording to narrow it down.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The message appears in the Avast window

Check whether you changed the correct Avast product. Multiple installed apps can each generate their own notifications, and offer controls may be separate from general notification treatment.

The message appears as a browser notification

Review site permissions and remove notification permission for the originating site. Also check the browser’s Pop-ups and redirects control; blocking only notifications does not necessarily block new windows.

The message appears in the operating-system notification area

Identify the app named by the operating system. It may be Avast, another Avast product, or a browser that was granted site-notification permission. Change the setting in that source rather than repeatedly adjusting a different Avast application.

The message uses threats, payment demands, or a phone number

Stop treating it as a notification-settings problem. Follow the safe response for a fake webpage alert: do not click, force-close the browser, scan, remove suspicious software, clear browser data, and secure accounts if needed.

How can gamers reduce interruptions without losing control of security?

For a gaming PC, the least disruptive approach is to use Silent mode only when you intentionally want Avast popups suppressed, then restore your preferred notification treatment afterward. This avoids confusing a full-screen interruption with a malware diagnosis.

  • Before changing settings, note whether the message is from Avast, a browser, or the operating system.
  • Use Avast’s Silent mode for Avast-generated popups on Windows or Avast One.
  • Use browser site-permission controls for website messages instead of changing antivirus settings.
  • Keep a routine for checking the security app directly after a gaming session if you have silenced visible alerts.
  • Never use a game-related interruption as a reason to trust a popup that asks for a download, payment, or phone call.

This separates convenience from verification: suppressing an interruption changes visibility, while checking the installed security app is how you determine whether there is an actual warning.

What is the simplest decision process for an Avast popup?

  1. Locate it. Is it inside Avast, in the operating-system notification area, or inside a browser page?
  2. Classify it. Does it describe routine activity, an update, an offer, a specific security warning, or an urgent demand?
  3. Choose the matching control. Use Avast Silent mode for Avast popups, privacy controls for promotional offers, and browser site settings for website messages.
  4. Reject scareware behavior. A phone number, payment demand, forced download, suspicious link, misspelled branding, or frozen page means you should close and investigate rather than comply.
  5. Recover after interaction. If you clicked, scan, remove suspicious items, clear browser data, change exposed passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and monitor accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Avast Silent mode turn off antivirus protection?

Silent mode is a notification-treatment choice that suppresses Avast popups, alerts, or messages. The setting is distinct from uninstalling the application, but you should open Avast directly to review status when you have intentionally hidden visible notifications.

Can clearing browser cache stop every Avast popup?

No. Clearing cache addresses stored browser data and can help after a malicious page, but it does not change notifications generated by an Avast desktop or mobile app. Those require the relevant app’s notification settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I identify which installed app sent a notification?

Read the app name shown in the operating system’s notification details, then open that product rather than changing settings in a different Avast app. If the message appears only in a browser tab, investigate browser permissions instead.

Should I call a support number shown in an Avast warning?

No. A phone-number demand is a red flag for a fake alert, especially when paired with urgency or payment instructions. Close the page without using its controls and follow the scan, cleanup, and account-security steps.
