To stop a game launcher opening when you sign in to Windows 10 or 11, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, find the launcher, and switch it off. If it is not listed, disable it under Task Manager > Startup apps. This prevents automatic startup without uninstalling the launcher; you can still open it manually.
The built-in Windows switch is usually the safest first move because it is visible, reversible, and limited to startup behavior. A launcher’s own preference may also control this setting, while Startup folders and registry Run keys explain some cases in which an app does not appear in the normal list.

Windows Settings is the simplest first choice: it disables a startup app without removing the software. Task Manager is the alternative if the launcher does not appear in Settings, and it also shows startup-impact information. These controls apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although wording and the exact appearance of a page can vary slightly between releases.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find the launcher, such as Steam or Epic Games Launcher, and switch it Off.
- If it is missing, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select Startup apps. If Task Manager opens in its compact view, use the option to show more details before looking for the Startup apps page.
- Select the launcher and choose Disable.
- Sign out and sign back in, or restart Windows, to check whether it still opens automatically.
Microsoft’s Windows startup instructions say, “Select Disable to prevent the app from starting automatically when you sign in.” Settings and Task Manager are the main Windows 10 and Windows 11 controls. Task Manager shows the same startup-app list as Settings, with additional startup-impact information.

Use the switch for the specific launcher you want to control rather than disabling several unrelated entries at once. That makes the result easier to verify and avoids accidentally turning off software you recognize as necessary. If more than one gaming component appears—for example, a launcher and a separate helper—treat each entry as a separate startup item and change only the one you intend to change.
How do I stop Steam from starting automatically?
Steam has its own startup checkbox. Turning it off in Steam is a direct, reversible way to prevent Steam from launching when the computer starts.

- Choose Steam > Settings > Interface.
- Clear Run Steam when my computer starts.
Close Steam and sign out of Windows or restart to verify the result. If Steam continues to start, also check Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager’s Startup apps list and disable it there. Checking both locations is useful because the client preference and the Windows startup entry are separate places where launch behavior can be controlled.
Turning off Steam at startup does not uninstall Steam or remove its installed games. You can launch Steam from the Start menu, a desktop shortcut, or a game shortcut whenever you want to play. The trade-off is that Steam-related activity that normally occurs while the client is open may wait until you start it.
How do I stop Epic Games Launcher from starting automatically?
Epic’s setting name depends on which client variant you use. The Windows Startup apps list is another documented way to disable the launcher.
Legacy Epic Games Launcher
- Open the launcher and select the player icon.
- Choose Settings.
- Clear Run When My Computer Starts.
Epic Games Launcher Preview
- Open the launcher and select the Epic Games logo.
- Choose Settings > General.
- Clear Run launcher on startup.
Disable Epic in Windows
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Startup apps.
- Right-click EpicGamesLauncher and choose Disable.
If you use the Preview client, look for its Preview-specific label rather than assuming the legacy wording is present. If the in-app checkbox is already clear but Epic still opens, use the Windows entry as the controlling fallback and then check the Startup folders described below.

First look in the launcher’s settings for a startup option. Depending on the software and version, it may be called Start with Windows, Open on startup, Launch at login, or Run when my computer starts. If you cannot find an in-app option—or turning it off does not work—use the Windows Startup apps list.

Names and behavior can change between launcher versions, so there is no single reliable menu path for every client. For Windows 10 and 11, the Startup apps page in Settings or Task Manager is the consistent fallback. A launcher may also install a helper or service with a name that is not identical to the main client. Disable only entries you recognize; do not infer that every gaming-related process is safe to turn off.
Use the in-app setting when you want a launcher-specific, easy-to-find preference. Use Windows when you want one central list of startup apps or when the launcher’s menu has moved. In either case, the change affects automatic opening at sign-in, not your ability to start the client manually later.
Why is a launcher missing from Startup apps?
Some programs start through a shortcut in a Windows Startup folder rather than appearing as a normal listed app. Check the current-user folder first; the all-users folder can contain shortcuts that apply to everyone who signs in to the PC.

Check the Startup folders
- Press Win + R to open Run.
- Enter
shell:startupand press Enter to open the current user’s Startup folder. - If the unwanted launcher shortcut is there, remove that shortcut.
- To check the folder for all users, press Win + R again, enter
shell:common startup, and remove the unwanted shortcut if present.
Removing a Startup-folder shortcut prevents that shortcut from launching the program; it does not uninstall the launcher itself. The two folders have different scope: shell:startup applies to the account you are using, while shell:common startup can affect every user account on the computer. If other people use the PC, be cautious about removing an all-users shortcut.
After removing a shortcut, sign out or restart and verify the behavior. If the launcher still opens, there may be a second shortcut, an in-app preference, or another startup mechanism. Do not repeatedly remove unrelated shortcuts simply because they have unfamiliar names; identify the target first.
Should I edit the registry?
Windows startup entries can also be stored in Run keys. Microsoft lists these locations:

HKCU refers to the current user, while HKLM is machine-wide. The 32-bit-compatible Wow6432Node path is another machine-level location Microsoft identifies. These distinctions help explain why an item might run for one account or for everyone.

Registry changes can have unintended consequences. Prefer the Startup apps controls or Startup-folder shortcut when they solve the problem. If you decide a registry change is necessary, back up the registry before editing and make changes only to an entry you recognize. Do not delete an entire Run key; a startup entry should be changed only after you have confirmed that its command belongs to the launcher you want to stop.
Which startup items should I disable?
Start with the launcher you recognize and want to keep from opening automatically. Task Manager’s startup-impact label can help you prioritize which items to investigate, but it measures startup activity—not gaming performance.

These thresholds are from Microsoft Learn’s 2020 explanation of startup impact. The labels describe CPU and disk activity during startup; they do not establish how much faster a game will run if you disable an item. A high-impact launcher may make sign-in feel busier, but the label is not a frame-rate benchmark and does not predict performance inside a game.
Use impact as a prioritization clue, not as a reason to disable everything marked high. Disable only launchers and helpers you recognize. If an item’s publisher or name is unclear, leave it enabled until you can identify what it does. A startup change should solve a specific problem—such as a launcher opening unexpectedly—rather than become an indiscriminate cleanup exercise.
What changes when I disable a launcher at startup?
Disabling startup is not the same as uninstalling. The launcher normally remains available to open manually, but functions that depend on the launcher or an associated service may not be ready until it starts.
- Updates: automatic update checks or downloads may be delayed until the launcher or its relevant service runs.
- Cloud sync: syncing may wait until the launcher starts.
- Notifications: launcher messages may not appear while it is closed.
- Controller or anti-cheat support: some features may rely on a launcher or service starting first.
Which functions are affected depends on the launcher, its version, and how its services are configured. Do not assume that disabling a launcher disables every related service, or that it leaves every background feature unchanged. If a particular game or feature stops working as expected, reopen the launcher and check its own settings before changing Windows startup entries.
A useful compromise is to leave startup disabled but launch the client before playing when you need updates, cloud synchronization, notifications, controller integration, or another feature. This preserves manual control while making the Windows sign-in process quieter.

What if the launcher still opens after I disable it?
Check whether the launcher has a separate in-app startup setting, whether a Startup-folder shortcut remains, or whether the software is being started by another service or scheduled action. The documented Windows controls cover startup apps and Startup folders; behavior outside those mechanisms can vary by program.
- Confirm that you disabled the correct entry in Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager’s Startup apps.
- Check the launcher’s own startup preference, especially if it has more than one client version.
- Inspect
shell:startupandshell:common startupfor shortcuts. - Look for a second, recognized helper entry rather than assuming the main launcher is the only component.
- Sign out or restart after each targeted change so you can tell which change affected the result.
- If a broader startup conflict is suspected, use a clean boot to isolate the cause.
If the launcher appears only when you open a particular game, that is different from automatic Windows startup. A game can deliberately start its required launcher when you choose to play. The startup switch controls launch at Windows sign-in; it does not prevent software from being started on demand.
Use a clean boot only for diagnosis
Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure uses msconfig to hide Microsoft services, disable selected services, and then disable Startup apps through Task Manager before restarting. A clean-boot environment can temporarily lose functionality, so treat it as a troubleshooting state rather than a permanent way to manage one launcher.
Clean boot is appropriate when the launcher keeps returning, another startup conflict is suspected, or you need to determine whether a non-Microsoft service is involved. It changes more than one component, so record what you disable. Avoid using it as the routine solution for a single launcher when the normal Startup apps switch works.
After identifying the cause, restore Normal startup, re-enable the services and startup items you disabled, and restart Windows. Leaving diagnostic changes in place can make unrelated software appear broken. Reversing the clean-boot settings returns the computer to its ordinary startup configuration.

Compare methods by four practical criteria: scope, reversibility, visibility, and side effects. Settings and Task Manager affect a listed app and are easy to undo. A Startup-folder shortcut may be hidden from the normal list but is still relatively straightforward to remove. A registry edit reaches a less visible mechanism and carries more risk. Clean boot has the broadest temporary impact and should be reversed after diagnosis.

Can I turn a launcher back on at startup later?
