First check whether you’re playing Java or Bedrock: Bedrock spawning is organized around a village center, while Java uses villager-centered mechanics. The relevant area—and the right farm design—depends on edition and version.
Start by identifying your edition and version
Check whether the world is running Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, and note its version. Iron farms use different spawning mechanics across the editions, so a layout or troubleshooting guide for one may not apply to the other. The Minecraft Wiki’s iron golem farming guide separates the two approaches.
Version matters in Java, too. Mojang’s tracker records a villager golem-detection behavior change affecting villagers upgraded from 1.21.1 or earlier; the reported behavior difference applies to 1.21.2 and later. If your farm was built from an older tutorial, compare its assumptions with your current version rather than treating the old design as universal. See Mojang issue MC-277889.
Bedrock: inspect around the village center
In Bedrock, the village center—not necessarily the visible spawning platform—is the key reference point. The Minecraft Wiki’s Bedrock farm guide describes a golem spawn area extending approximately eight blocks horizontally and six blocks vertically from that center. A bed or bell can be associated with the center, so check the village setup rather than assuming the farm floor marks it.

Look for eligible surfaces throughout that area, including outside the farm’s walls. Ground, nearby roofs, ledges, and cave surfaces can compete with the intended platform if they meet the spawning conditions. Make unwanted candidate surfaces unusable, or adjust the build so they are outside the relevant area. Preserve the farm platform as the usable spawning location.
Bedrock farm function also depends on village setup. The Wiki guide lists requirements including at least 20 beds, at least 10 villagers, villager work, beds linked to villagers, simulation-distance conditions, and limits related to existing golems. These are guide-specific practical requirements, not a guarantee for every version or world. Microsoft’s documentation confirms that village proximity can be part of spawn rules, but it does not provide a complete player-facing map of iron-golem spawn geometry: see the Bedrock player-in-village filter.

Java: use a Java-specific layout and check nearby surfaces
Java spawning is villager-centered rather than organized around a Bedrock-style village-center spawn area. Follow a farm design for Java and your game version, then inspect valid surfaces around the villagers where a golem could appear instead of on the intended platform. Prevent nearby competing surfaces from qualifying, or change the layout to keep them out of the relevant spawning area.
Account for the villagers’ golem detection behavior when diagnosing repeated spawns. The version-specific change in Java 1.21.2 and later documented in MC-277889 can affect how an older farm behaves after an upgrade; it is not a universal rule for every Java world.

Check this troubleshooting sequence
- Record the edition and version. Use a farm design made for that edition and, where possible, that version.
- Find the relevant reference point. In Bedrock, check the village center and its bed- or bell-linked setup. In Java, start with the villagers and the farm’s Java-specific design.
- Inspect beyond the farm’s walls. Check nearby ground, roofs, ledges, caves, and other candidate surfaces in the relevant spawning area.
- Make unwanted surfaces ineligible. Modify or cover competing locations, leaving the intended platform as the usable spawn area. The available official references do not establish a complete current block-by-block proofing list for all editions and versions, so verify a block choice for your own setup rather than assuming one material always works.
- Check the existing golem and village conditions. In Bedrock, review beds, villagers, work, the center, simulation-distance conditions, and the existing-golem limit described by the farm guide. In Java, consider villager detection behavior and version.
- Change one factor, then observe the next spawn. If it still appears outside, widen your inspection or reconsider the Bedrock village center or the Java villagers’ possible spawn locations.
Why lighting usually isn’t the fix
Iron-golem spawning is not simply the hostile-mob darkness check. The relevant question is whether a location meets iron-golem spawning conditions within the applicable village or villager-based setup. The official Bedrock references describe village-specific spawning filters, while the farm guide discusses spawnable surfaces; neither supports treating extra light as a general solution. Microsoft’s broader Bedrock spawn-rules documentation explains how creators can use these filters in data-driven rules.
