If Microsoft Edge keeps asking to import Chrome bookmarks, passwords, history or other data whenever it opens, turn off the per-launch import control. In Edge, go to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Profiles > Import browser data, then disable the Chrome option that imports data at each browser launch. On a managed Windows computer, an administrator must disable the ImportOnEachLaunch policy instead. Restart Edge after changing either setting. This fixes recurring imports without requiring you to uninstall Chrome or erase data that is already in Edge.

How do I stop Edge from importing Chrome data every time it opens?

The personal-setting fix is in Edge’s profile import page. The label changes slightly between Edge releases, but the control is the setting backed by Microsoft’s ImportOnEachLaunch policy.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. In the left pane, select Profiles, then open Import browser data.
  4. Find the Chrome option for importing browsing data at each Edge launch and switch it off. If the page offers separate toggles, disable the recurring or “at each browser launch” option rather than the one-time import command.
  5. Close every Edge window and open the browser again. Confirm that the import prompt no longer appears and that Chrome data is not copied again.

This setting controls future launches. It does not remove bookmarks, passwords, history or other items that Edge imported previously; those have to be deleted separately from the relevant Edge profile if you no longer want them.

Why does Edge keep bringing back Chrome bookmarks and passwords on startup?

A recurring import is usually caused by the per-launch import control, not by Edge randomly recreating a profile. When enabled, Edge checks for data in another installed browser each time it starts and can offer or perform an import. Chrome data can include more than favorites, so the result may look like a complete profile migration.

What Edge may import

  • Favorites or bookmarks
  • Saved passwords
  • Addresses and other autofill information
  • Payment information
  • Browsing history
  • Browser settings
  • Pinned or open tabs
  • Extensions
  • Cookies

The normal import dialog can let you choose individual data types, such as favorites or passwords. A per-launch policy, however, determines whether the recurring import workflow appears at all, so selecting fewer types does not necessarily stop the prompt.

What is the difference between per-launch import and first-run import?

These are separate Edge controls. Use ImportOnEachLaunch for a prompt or import that returns whenever Edge starts; use AutoImportAtFirstRun when the behavior occurs only during the initial setup experience.

Behavior Control What changing it does Supported systems
Every Edge launch ImportOnEachLaunch Controls recurring prompts and imports from other browsers at startup. Windows Edge 104 and later; not supported on macOS, Android or iOS.
Initial setup only AutoImportAtFirstRun Controls automatic migration during the first-run experience. The DisabledAutoImport value is 4; it skips the import section and prevents automatic import. Windows and macOS from Edge 77.

If you disable the first-run policy when the real problem is an import on every launch, the recurring behavior can remain. Conversely, changing the per-launch control will not undo an import that happened during an earlier first run.

How do I disable ImportOnEachLaunch with Group Policy?

On an organization-managed Windows device, Edge may enforce the setting, hide the user control or restore it after you change it. An administrator should disable the policy in the local or domain Group Policy editor.

  1. Open the Group Policy editor used by your organization.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
  3. Open Allow import of data from other browsers on each Microsoft Edge launch.
  4. Set the policy to Disabled, apply the change and close the editor.
  5. Fully exit Edge, including any background process still running, and launch it again.

Microsoft identifies this policy as ImportOnEachLaunch. When it is disabled, users should not see a prompt to import browsing data from other browsers on each Edge launch. Dynamic policy refresh is unavailable for this setting, so restarting Edge is required; signing out of Windows is normally unnecessary unless your organization’s management system also requires it.

How can I tell whether Group Policy is overriding my choice?

After restarting Edge, revisit Settings > Profiles > Import browser data. If the switch is unavailable, repeatedly re-enabled or accompanied by a managed-browser notice, the device may be receiving a domain, mobile-device-management or configuration-management policy. Only the administrator who owns that policy can make the change permanent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I disable ImportOnEachLaunch in the Windows registry?

Yes, an administrator can set the equivalent machine policy directly in the registry. This is intended for managed Windows configurations; editing the registry incorrectly can affect other Edge policies or Windows components.

  1. Back up the registry or export the key you will change.
  2. Open Registry Editor with administrative privileges.
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Create the key path if your organization’s policy deployment has not created it.
  4. Create or edit a REG_DWORD value named ImportOnEachLaunch.
  5. Set its data to 0.
  6. Close Registry Editor, exit all Edge processes and start Edge again.

The registry value is machine-wide because it is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. A later domain or management-policy refresh can overwrite it, so use your organization’s approved policy channel when one exists.

What should I do if the import happens only during Edge’s first setup?

Use the first-run policy rather than the recurring-launch setting. In a managed deployment, configure AutoImportAtFirstRun with the DisabledAutoImport value of 4. That value skips the import section of the first-run experience and prevents Edge from automatically importing browser data and settings.

This is useful when preparing a standard Windows or macOS image, rolling out Edge to new users or repeatedly creating profiles. It does not govern later launches, and it does not remove Chrome data that a user has already imported.

Which option should I use for my situation?

Your situation Best action Why
The prompt returns every time Edge opens on a personal Windows computer. Turn off the recurring Chrome import option in Profiles > Import browser data. It changes the user-level control without requiring administrative tools.
The switch is locked or keeps returning on an organization-owned Windows computer. Have an administrator disable ImportOnEachLaunch through Group Policy or the approved registry-management method. A managed policy can override profile settings.
Import appears only while a new Edge profile is being created. Configure AutoImportAtFirstRun as DisabledAutoImport (4) in the deployment policy. This targets the initial migration, not ordinary launches.
You still want a one-time migration of selected items. Leave recurring import off and use the normal import dialog when you choose. The dialog lets you select data types instead of allowing an automatic migration on every startup.

Does ImportOnEachLaunch work on macOS, Android or iPhone?

No. Microsoft documents ImportOnEachLaunch for Windows Edge 104 and later and lists it as unsupported on macOS, Android and iOS. If you are seeing a similar prompt on another platform, look for that platform’s profile-import controls or remove the imported items manually; do not expect the Windows policy or registry value to apply.

The separate AutoImportAtFirstRun policy is documented for Windows and macOS beginning with Edge 77. Check the installed Edge version before deploying either policy, especially on older managed images.

What if Edge still imports Chrome data after I turn the setting off?

Work through these checks in order so you do not change the wrong control.

1. Confirm the scope

Watch when the behavior occurs. A prompt on every normal launch points to ImportOnEachLaunch; a prompt only while creating a profile points to AutoImportAtFirstRun. If it appears after a browser update, check the setting again because wording and profile pages can change between Edge releases.

2. Restart completely

Close all Edge windows and wait briefly before reopening it. On Windows, background processes can keep the browser running, and the per-launch policy does not dynamically refresh. A restart is therefore part of the fix, not an optional verification step.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

3. Check for management

On a work or school computer, inspect whether the profile page identifies the browser as managed. Ask the administrator to check the Group Policy path and the ImportOnEachLaunch value. A local toggle cannot permanently defeat a policy delivered from the domain or device-management service.

4. Separate automatic import from manual synchronization

Chrome bookmarks or passwords may appear because you deliberately imported them, because an Edge profile is synchronizing its own data, or because another person uses the same Windows account. Turning off recurring import stops that import workflow; it does not disable Edge Sync or erase existing profile content.

5. Remove unwanted data only after stopping the cause

If old Chrome items remain, first disable recurring import. Then remove the unwanted favorites, passwords, history, cookies or extensions from the correct Edge profile. Deleting them before disabling the cause can be temporary because a later launch may import them again.

Is it safer to disable automatic browser imports?

For shared, regulated or managed computers, disabling recurring imports reduces the chance that credentials and other personal information will be copied into an unintended Edge profile. Microsoft’s policy guidance and the CIS Microsoft Edge benchmark both identify the per-launch import setting as a control worth disabling when minimizing exposure of sensitive browser data matters.

The trade-off is convenience: users who intentionally keep Chrome and Edge in sync must perform a deliberate, one-time import when needed and choose the data types in the import dialog. That is usually preferable on a shared machine because passwords, payment information, cookies and extensions can all carry security or privacy implications.

How can an administrator verify the fix?

  1. Confirm the Windows Edge version meets the documented support range for ImportOnEachLaunch.
  2. Verify the Group Policy setting is Disabled or the registry value is REG_DWORD 0.
  3. Restart every Edge session after the policy change.
  4. Open a test profile and launch Edge several times.
  5. Check that no recurring Chrome-import prompt appears and that newly added Chrome data is not copied automatically.
  6. Document any remaining imported items separately; their presence may reflect an earlier migration rather than a failed policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will turning off recurring import delete my existing Edge bookmarks and passwords?

No. The control prevents future automatic imports but does not clean the profile. Remove unwanted items from Edge’s favorites, password, history, cookie or extension managers after confirming that the recurring trigger is off.

Do I need administrator rights to change the Edge setting?

A personal Edge profile normally lets its user change the import toggle. Administrator rights are required for Group Policy or machine-wide registry changes, and an organization may restrict the profile control even when you are a local standard user.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep Chrome installed after disabling Edge imports?

Yes. Chrome can remain installed and usable; disabling the Edge control only stops Edge from checking it for an automatic migration at launch. You can still start a deliberate, one-time import later.

Why do only some Chrome items appear in Edge after an import?

Import availability depends on the data type, profile access and the choices made in the import dialog. For example, a user may select favorites but not passwords, or Edge may be unable to read a protected item from the Chrome profile.
