Lightning can transform a villager when it strikes nearby—not only when the bolt hits the villager directly.
Why villagers turn into witches
Lightning causes the transformation. The Minecraft Wiki’s zombie-villager tutorial says an adult or baby villager within four blocks of a lightning strike turns into a witch. The bolt does not have to visibly hit the villager, so a wall or enclosure by itself is not reliable protection from a nearby strike.
How to protect a village with a lightning rod
- Build or choose a structure separate from the villagers’ enclosure.
- Mount a lightning rod there with access to the sky.
- Keep the rod and the point where lightning strikes it more than four blocks from every villager.
A rod attracts lightning in a “small area” to itself instead of the strike’s original target, according to Duncan Geere’s official Minecraft article, “Taking Inventory: Lightning Rod”, published June 3, 2021. The article does not specify an attraction radius, so do not assume one rod covers a particular distance or an entire village.
Will a roof protect villagers?
A roof can block a direct strike at the covered spot, but the cited guidance does not establish that a roof alone prevents transformation from a nearby lightning strike. Use a separate lightning rod and keep its strike point beyond the four-block distance instead of relying only on a roof.

What to know about editions and versions
The four-block distance is the mechanic described by the Minecraft Wiki tutorial; the official lightning-rod article describes attraction only as a “small area.” These sources do not establish an exact attraction radius across Java and Bedrock or guarantee identical behavior in every game version. If you are protecting a large village, place rods so the villagers remain more than four blocks from the likely strike point rather than assuming a specific coverage radius.
