The reliable way to stop an AI service from using your data for model improvement is to disable its training control before sending sensitive material, then use temporary modes and privacy requests where available. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone; OpenAI says new conversations after opting out are not used to improve its models. Temporary Chat adds a separate safeguard for one-off work, while business, school and API accounts follow different defaults and retention rules.
No single switch covers every assistant, plug-in or coding environment. Audit each service, avoid feedback on sensitive chats, check separate product controls such as Codex’s Include environments, and treat deletion or objection requests as separate from training opt-outs.

What does “used to train AI” mean?
When a provider uses prompts, uploaded files, responses or feedback to improve a model, that information may influence later model development. The exact process varies, but the practical privacy question is simple: can the provider use what you submit for model improvement, and can you stop that use?
A training opt-out is not the same as deleting your account, removing a chat from your history, or erasing information from a model that has already been trained. Those are separate actions, often handled through different settings or privacy forms.

How do I stop ChatGPT from using my chats to train AI?
For a personal ChatGPT workspace, turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings → Data controls. OpenAI’s Help Center says conversations created after you opt out will not be used to improve its models.
Turn off model improvement
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account where you plan to enter the data.
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Switch Improve the model for everyone off.
- Confirm the setting remains off before starting a sensitive conversation.
The control is account-specific. If you use more than one personal account, repeat the check in each one. Recheck after a major product or policy change because labels, menus and retention terms can change.
Use a privacy request when you need a stronger record
OpenAI’s Privacy Center lists options to download data, delete an account, submit a permanent do-not-train request, and request removal of personal data from ChatGPT responses. Keep the confirmation or case number for your records. A privacy request does not automatically erase information from every model that may already have been trained.
Use Temporary Chat for a one-off sensitive task
Temporary Chat is intended for conversations you do not want used for model improvement while they remain temporary. OpenAI says temporary conversations are not used to improve its models. If you save a temporary conversation, it becomes a regular chat, so do not save it when the temporary status is the reason you chose that mode.
Temporary Chat reduces future use; it is not a universal eraser. It also does not exempt information that you copy into another service with a different policy.
Do not rate a sensitive conversation
OpenAI states that if you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to train its models. That exception can apply even when you have otherwise opted out. For sensitive work, leave feedback unsent or provide it only after removing confidential details.

Which ChatGPT controls cover different kinds of accounts?
Consumer, organizational and API accounts can have materially different defaults. Confirm the account type before assuming that a setting applies.

The API log period is a retention rule, not a statement that the data is used to train a model. Conversely, a training opt-out does not mean that every operational, security or legal retention process stops.
What should businesses, schools and API users ask an administrator?
If you use an employer-, school- or client-managed account, you may not control the relevant switch yourself. Ask the administrator or contract owner five concrete questions:

- Is sharing for model improvement disabled, and has the organization explicitly enabled it?
- Which products and workspaces are covered by the agreement?
- Are prompts, uploads and outputs retained for abuse monitoring or other security purposes?
- How long are those records kept, and what legal or safety exceptions apply?
- Who can submit access, deletion or objection requests on the organization’s behalf?
Do not paste confidential game-development material, unreleased builds, player records or support exports into a work account until those answers are documented.
How do I submit access, deletion or objection requests?
Use the provider’s official privacy portal rather than relying only on a chat setting. OpenAI’s Privacy Center identifies several request types:
- Access or download: request a copy of the personal data associated with your account.
- Account deletion: ask for the account and associated data to be deleted under the provider’s process.
- Permanent do-not-train request: create a lasting request not to use your information for model improvement.
- Personal-data removal from responses: ask the provider to address personal information appearing in ChatGPT responses.
- Objection: exercise an available right to object where the provider and your jurisdiction support it.
Save the submission date, identity-verification result and confirmation. These requests generally govern future handling or the provider’s own systems. The reviewed official materials do not promise complete removal of information from every model that has already been trained.
Can I remove data from an AI model that already trained on it?
There is no universal, provider-independent eraser for a trained model. The official controls described by OpenAI cover opting out, deletion and privacy objections, but they do not guarantee that a particular fact will be removed from every existing model or from every derivative system.

That uncertainty changes the safest workflow: prevent unnecessary disclosure first, request deletion or removal as soon as you identify a problem, and avoid assuming that deleting a chat reverses historical model development. If the information is highly sensitive, contact the provider’s privacy team and document the response rather than relying on an in-product toggle alone.
Is publicly available data automatically fair game for AI training?
No. The Australian Information Commissioner’s guidance, updated October 23, 2024, says: “Just because data is publicly available or otherwise accessible does not mean it can legally be used to train or fine-tune generative AI models or systems.” Developers still need to consider whether public material contains personal information and whether privacy obligations are met.
That matters to gamers and creators whose usernames, livestream transcripts, mod documentation, screenshots, voice clips or forum posts are visible to the public. Public visibility does not by itself prove permission for model training, and the legal answer depends on the jurisdiction, the data, the provider and the stated purpose.
A Canadian privacy-commissioner investigation likewise records the principle that training use is not integral to service delivery and that users should be offered a choice about participation. It is not a worldwide rule: rights, lawful bases and complaint routes differ by country.

Provider controls work best when paired with data minimization. Before submitting a support log, bug report or game-development document:
- Remove real names, email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses and account IDs.
- Delete authentication tokens, API keys, session cookies, private repository URLs and local file paths.
- Replace player identifiers with neutral labels such as
Player_A. - Crop screenshots so unrelated chats, desktop notifications and browser tabs are not visible.
- Summarize a long save file or crash dump instead of uploading the complete archive when the full file is unnecessary.
- Check whether an embedded assistant, browser extension, plug-in or game launcher sends the text to a different provider.
Redaction does not replace an opt-out. It limits the harm if a setting is misunderstood or later changes.

- Inventory services: list personal, work, school, API, plug-in and embedded accounts separately.
- Identify account type: record whether each service is consumer, organizational, educational or developer-facing.
- Find the privacy control: look for model improvement, training, data sharing or conversation-history settings.
- Disable sharing: turn off the control before entering sensitive material and capture a dated screenshot for internal records.
- Use a temporary mode: choose incognito or temporary chat for one-off work when the provider says that mode is excluded from model improvement.
- Minimize uploads: redact identifiers and submit only the portion needed to answer the question.

Record the date you checked each item. Privacy language and interface labels are volatile, so an old screenshot is evidence of a past state, not a permanent guarantee.

The switch is not available
Stop before uploading sensitive material. Use the provider’s privacy portal to ask whether an objection or do-not-train request is available, and use a different service or a local, non-upload workflow for confidential work if necessary.
The policy and interface disagree
Save the policy version, note the account type and ask support for written clarification. Do not assume that a consumer setting applies to an API project, plug-in or managed workspace.
You already submitted sensitive data
Turn off model improvement immediately, avoid rating the conversation, and submit the relevant access, deletion or objection request. Record what was sent, when it was sent and which account handled it.

Do not save or continue the conversation until the interface clearly identifies its status. If you saved it, treat it as a regular chat and use the provider’s deletion or privacy-request process separately.
What does this mean for game data?
Game-related material often combines ordinary troubleshooting with personal or commercially sensitive information. A crash report can contain a username and local path; a screenshot can reveal a private Discord message; a mod project can include unreleased assets; and an API log can expose a player identifier or authentication token.

For public forum posts or livestream transcripts, remember that public access does not automatically settle whether training use is lawful. For private development or support data, obtain the studio’s approval, use the organization’s documented account, and apply the same redaction and provider-audit steps as you would to any other confidential record.
What is the practical bottom line?
Use provider-level controls before disclosure, not after. For personal ChatGPT, disable Improve the model for everyone; use Temporary Chat for qualifying one-off work; never rate a sensitive conversation; check Codex separately; and handle deletion, access and objection requests through the privacy portal. For business, school and API accounts, verify the contract and retention settings with the administrator. Finally, assume that an opt-out prevents specified future use but does not promise to rewrite every model that already exists.

Does turning off model improvement delete my existing chat history?
