If your PS5 DualSense controller seems to run out of charge quickly, first confirm it is fully charging, then test lower-use controller settings and check for software updates. These steps may help, but Sony gives no universal runtime figure and does not quantify the battery savings from individual settings. If short runtime persists as the controller ages, battery wear may be the cause.
Check whether the controller is fully charged
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Accessories and check the controller’s battery indicator.
- When charging, the battery icon animates; once full, it stops animating and shows three bars.
Check the indicator after charging before judging how quickly the controller drains. If it never reaches full, investigate the cable and power source first.
Reduce optional controller features
Go to Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). Where these options are available, try lowering vibration intensity and trigger effect intensity, and reducing controller speaker volume or light brightness. These changes reduce use of optional features, but Sony does not publish a specific runtime gain for any one of them.
Change one or two settings, play as you normally would, and compare how long the charge lasts. This makes it easier to tell whether a particular adjustment helps your setup; results can vary by game and use.

Check controller software and connection settings
Check for DualSense device software updates at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. Sony says controller device-software updates are added when PS5 system software is updated, so keep the console software current as well. If you play with a USB cable, check the controller’s Communication Method setting under Settings > Accessories > Controller (General). Wired play does not by itself confirm that the controller is charging: the cable must connect to a powered USB port, and the on-screen battery icon should show charging.

Charge the DualSense correctly
Sony recommends connecting the controller to the PS5 with the included USB cable. A USB cable that complies with USB standards can also be used with a computer or another USB device, although some devices may not charge the controller. Confirm charging from the battery icon rather than assuming every cable or port supplies power. See Sony’s DualSense charging instructions.
Charge while the PS5 is in rest mode
The controller can charge while the PS5 is on or in rest mode. To allow USB power during rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports and select an option other than Off. On CFI-2000 model-group consoles, Adaptive is available; Sony says it adjusts charging time to the controller’s remaining charge and can use less power than Always or 3 Hours. Consider battery age and charging conditions
Sony’s DualSense manual says, “The battery has a limited lifespan. Battery duration will gradually decrease with repeated usage and age.” It also notes that duration varies with storage, use, and environmental conditions. A setting change cannot restore capacity lost through battery wear.
Sony recommends charging between 10 °C and 30 °C; charging may be less effective outside that range. If you leave the controller unused for an extended period, Sony recommends fully charging it at least once a year. Do not deliberately drain the battery completely as a troubleshooting step.
When to seek service
If the controller is older and still has persistently short runtime after you have checked charging, settings, and software, age-related battery wear is a plausible explanation—not a diagnosis. Sony’s reviewed guidance does not set a normal number of hours, so there is no official runtime threshold that alone proves the battery has failed. Consider a qualified service provider, and check warranty and service terms before paying for repair or replacement.
