The current Provenance listing names PlayStation and numerous SEGA systems, while the project’s own release notes still say its official tvOS App Store release is “Coming Soon.” RetroArch is already available through the Apple TV App Store for readers who want PlayStation or SEGA emulation on Apple’s set-top box today.
Short answer: Provenance is no longer merely “coming” to Apple’s App Store. Its current U.S. App Store listing offers an iPhone- and iPad-oriented retro-console emulator with support listed for PlayStation and numerous SEGA systems. However, that does not mean Provenance is currently available in the Apple TV App Store: the project’s own release notes still list an official tvOS App Store release as “Coming Soon.”

What changed after the April 2024 report?
On April 19, 2024, reporting about Provenance focused on the team’s plan to bring its multi-emulator frontend to Apple’s App Store. At the time, Provenance had been in development since 2016, could be sideloaded on iPhone and Apple TV, and supported classic platforms including the original PlayStation, SEGA Genesis, and Atari 2600. The developer did not provide a firm release date.

- 8BitDo Controller compatibility: all 8BitDo Bluetooth Controllers and arcade stick.
- System compatibility: Switch, Windows, macOS, Steam Deck & Raspberry Pis and more. USB Wireless Adapter 2 is compatible with Steam Deck now.
- Support 6-axis motion on Switch and Vibration on X-input mode.
- Supports ultimate software - customize button mapping, adjust stick & trigger sensitivity, vibration control and create macros with any button combination.
The announcement became possible because Apple revised its App Review Guidelines in April 2024 to permit retro game console emulator apps on its platforms. Apple’s guidelines also say that retro console and PC emulator apps may offer to download games, while placing responsibility for compliance with Apple’s rules and applicable law on the developer.
That policy change made App Store distribution possible; it did not promise that Provenance would launch on every Apple platform at the same time. It also did not make every game download lawful. Those are separate questions.
Provenance’s current App Store status
The current U.S. App Store listing identifies Provenance as a retro-console game emulator. Its listed systems include:
- PlayStation
- PlayStation Portable
- Sega Genesis
- Master System
- Saturn
- Sega CD
- SG-1000
- 32X
- Dreamcast
- Other retro systems listed by the app
The listing’s compatibility section currently names iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision. It does not currently identify Apple TV as a supported App Store platform.
That distinction is easy to miss because the broader Provenance project describes itself as an iOS and tvOS multi-emulator frontend and advertises a native Apple TV interface. The project’s current release notes, however, separately identify an official tvOS App Store release as “Coming Soon.”

Does Provenance support PlayStation and SEGA games?
Yes, the current App Store listing names PlayStation and a broad collection of SEGA platforms, including Genesis, Master System, Saturn, Sega CD, SG-1000, 32X, and Dreamcast. It also lists PlayStation Portable.
Those platform listings describe the emulator’s intended system support. They should not be read as a guarantee that every game for every listed system works perfectly. Compatibility can vary by individual title, required BIOS files, graphics features, controller input, file format, and the specific Apple device and operating-system version.

The older April 2024 story also required an important correction: early wording could be read as suggesting that GameCube and Wii emulation would necessarily be part of the iPhone release. That implication was removed. There is no basis in the supplied current evidence for promising GameCube or Wii support on iPhone.
Can you use Provenance on Apple TV now?
Do not assume that an iPhone App Store listing also means an Apple TV App Store listing. Apple’s App Store compatibility is platform-specific, and Provenance’s own current release notes still treat the official tvOS App Store version as forthcoming.
Provenance has had a broader tvOS project and a native Apple TV interface outside the current App Store availability described above. But readers looking for an official, currently downloadable Apple TV App Store release should verify the Apple TV listing separately rather than relying on the iPhone listing or older sideloading instructions.

RetroArch is the current Apple TV alternative
For Apple TV owners who want an App Store-based emulator now, RetroArch is the clearest current alternative in the available evidence. Its Apple App Store listing includes Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and Mac compatibility. It lists Sony PlayStation and multiple SEGA platforms, including:
- Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive, CD, and 32X
- SG-1000
- Saturn
RetroArch’s listed features include save states, controller support, shaders, cheats, fast-forward, rewind, and other emulator functions. The user experience is different from Provenance’s frontend, and a system listing still does not guarantee universal compatibility with every game. Nevertheless, RetroArch currently provides a more direct route for someone specifically asking for PlayStation or SEGA emulation through the Apple TV App Store.
What controller should you use?
Touch controls can be adequate for menu navigation or simple games, but they are a poor substitute for physical controls in many PlayStation, Saturn, Genesis, and other console-style games. Apple’s controller framework supports Made-for-iPhone controllers, console controllers, and platform-specific input devices such as the Siri Remote on Apple TV. Apple’s review guidance also says Apple TV apps should be usable with the Siri Remote or third-party game controllers; when a controller is required, the app’s metadata should say so.
For living-room play, a Bluetooth game controller for iPhone and Apple TV is the most practical accessory category to consider. Check the controller’s current compatibility details before buying: “works with iPhone” can depend on the connection method and iOS version, while Apple TV compatibility depends on the controller and tvOS support. A traditional console-style controller is generally a better fit for long PlayStation or SEGA sessions than the Siri Remote alone.
Buying note: No specific controller model is recommended here because model-level compatibility and current retailer availability were not verified. Look for an MFi-compatible or otherwise Apple-supported Bluetooth controller whose specifications explicitly include both your iPhone connection method and Apple TV.

Are ROM downloads legal because emulators are now allowed?
No. Apple allowing emulator apps and an emulator supporting a console are not blanket permission to download copyrighted game files.
An emulator is software that imitates the behavior of a game console. A ROM is a digital image of a game cartridge or disc, while a backup is a copy made from media or files the user is legally entitled to copy under the applicable law. The legal status of the emulator and the legal status of a particular game image are separate issues.
Apple’s policy permits certain emulator apps but still requires compliance with applicable law. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction, and making, downloading, sharing, or acquiring a copyrighted game image without authorization can create legal problems. Nintendo, among other rights holders, has specifically warned against pirated game downloads.
Use only game files and BIOS files you are legally permitted to use, and do not treat an App Store listing as proof that a third-party download source is authorized.

The original headline described a plan, not a guaranteed launch date. The April 2024 report did not announce a fixed release timetable, and the later App Store status is more limited than a simple “Provenance is now on iPhone and Apple TV” summary suggests.
