In modern Minecraft: Java Edition, use /summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:"minecraft:blue"} to summon a blue axolotl at your current position. Bedrock Edition uses different command syntax; the official Bedrock reference does not document a blue-specific summon event, so do not paste the Java command there.
Java Edition: summon a blue axolotl
Enter this command in a Java world where you can use commands:
/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:"minecraft:blue"}The three tildes (~ ~ ~) mean the command’s current position, so the axolotl appears where the command executes. The complete command form is listed by CraftCMD’s axolotl command reference. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.5 release notes document the named axolotl variant values, including blue.
If the command fails
- Check that you are playing Java Edition and that commands are enabled or you have permission to use them.
- Make sure the variant is written exactly as
"minecraft:blue", including the quotation marks. - Check the exact game version. The named-value command is based on current reference material; command syntax can vary between releases.
Why older blue-axolotl commands may not work
Older tutorials commonly use the integer form {Variant:4}. Treat it as legacy guidance, not as a universal command: Java 1.21.5 documents named axolotl variants instead. An older example appears in the MinecraftMaps summon axolotl generator.

Bedrock Edition: don’t use Java NBT syntax
Bedrock’s /summon command has its own syntax, including an optional spawn-event argument, and requires cheats. The official Bedrock summon command reference explains that syntax but does not identify a blue-axolotl-specific event. Java’s {Variant:...} suffix is not Bedrock syntax. Check documentation for your specific Bedrock version before relying on a blue-specific event name.
