Fire tornadoes in Helldivers 2 are moving hazards, not homing attacks. Keep track of the tornado and the flames it leaves behind, route around burning ground, and leave yourself a way out near objectives and extraction. If your Helldiver catches fire, dive to extinguish the flames, then move clear before fighting again. Fire resistance only delays ignition; it does not make standing in fire safe.
What to do when a fire tornado approaches
- Track both the tornado and its fire trail. Arrowhead changed tornado movement to be more random, so it should no longer feel as though it actively responds to player movement. Its path is still unpredictable, so keep room to move. The patch also says tornadoes should be less likely to overlap objectives or extraction, not that they can never obstruct them. - Go around burning ground. Do not cut across the flames left behind by the tornado. A community-maintained Helldivers Wiki entry on environmental hazards describes a trail roughly 30 meters long and 10 meters wide that lasts about 30 seconds. Those dimensions and timing are community guidance, not an official guarantee.
- Keep a retreat lane open. Near an objective or extraction, avoid positioning your squad where the tornado or its trail can leave you boxed in. This is a tactical precaution, not a guarantee that any route will stay safe.
- If you catch fire, dive. The community wiki recommends diving to extinguish yourself. Once the flames are out, move away from the active tornado and burning trail before standing to fight. Arrowhead’s published patch notes do not provide a full tornado-specific survival procedure.
Why the tornado can feel unpredictable
In PATCH 01.000.400, dated June 13, 2024, Arrowhead said fire tornadoes should move more randomly and should no longer feel like they actively respond to player movement. During a tornado storm, enemy vision is reduced while player vision is unaffected. These are stated behavior changes, not assurances that a tornado cannot cross your route or interfere with an objective.

Does fire-resistant armor protect you?
It offers limited protection. Arrowhead’s PATCH 01.002.001 says all Helldiver armor has a fire-retardant coating that makes ignition take slightly longer. PATCH 01.003.000, dated June 4, 2026, adds that the Helldiver is slightly more resistant to being set on fire, while explicitly stating that burn damage remains unchanged. The practical distinction is that ignition may be delayed; fire still hurts once you are burning.

Watch out for friendly fire
Teammate flamethrowers and incendiary effects can hurt allies. Arrowhead’s PATCH 01.000.100, whose official page was updated April 26, 2024, confirms that player-generated fire can damage teammates. Arrowhead also describes friendly fire as integral to the experience and says it cannot be turned off. Keep clear of a teammate’s flame effects, especially when the squad is already maneuvering around a tornado.

When do fire tornadoes appear?
Fire tornadoes are among the planetary hazards that can appear randomly during deployment, according to Arrowhead’s PATCH 01.000.100. The official notes do not establish a dependable spawn interval, so do not plan around a fixed timer.
