In vanilla Minecraft, a grindstone removes non-curse enchantments but does not transfer them to a book. To save enchantments, use a mod that explicitly adds item-to-book extraction. Which one works depends on your Minecraft edition, game version, and mod loader.

What happens in vanilla Minecraft?

A vanilla grindstone removes non-curse enchantments from an item and returns some experience for each enchantment removed. It does not preserve those enchantments in a book. Mojang’s Village & Pillage release description summarizes the feature: “Has the ability to remove all non-curse enchantments from an item; for each enchant removed some XP is reimbursed”. If you want to reuse an enchantment, you need a compatible mod that adds that transfer mechanic.

Choose a mod that matches your setup

These options use different blocks and extraction rules. The listed compatibility is what the project pages describe, not a guarantee for later releases or every modpack.

Mod How extraction works Compatibility and costs stated in the cited source
Grind Enchantments Uses a grindstone: put an enchanted item and a book in it to transfer enchantments to the book and leave the original item unenchanted. The description also covers moving the top enchantment from one enchanted book to another normal or enchanted book. Support varies by release; check the project files for the exact Minecraft version and loader. The cited description does not state a general experience cost.
Disgrind Uses the grindstone for selective extraction. A normal book extracts the bottommost enchantment. A written book or book and quill can specify positions in a comma-separated list; the project page also describes an asterisk selection rule. The project page lists Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric and NeoForge, and a Balm dependency. These are page details observed at research time, not a guarantee of later support. A general experience cost is not stated.
Disenchanting Forge Adds a dedicated Disenchanter block. It transfers the first enchantment from an item to a book. Shift-clicking the output can attempt to transfer all enchantments if enough experience and books are available. The cited description does not establish a universal version, loader, or fixed experience cost; check the project page for your installation.
Dis-Enchanting Table option described by CurseForge A separate table-based approach that imprints enchantments onto a book. A CurseForge guide dated July 29, 2026 states a cost of 5 experience levels for the option it describes. Confirm the actual mod page and compatibility before relying on that figure; the guide does not establish it for other mods or versions.

Transfer enchantments with a grindstone mod

Grind Enchantments: transfer the enchantments described by the mod

  1. Open the Grind Enchantments project page and confirm that its files support your Minecraft version and loader.
  2. Install the mod and any dependencies required by the matching release, following that file’s instructions.
  3. In-game, open the grindstone and place the enchanted item and a book in its input slots as the mod describes.
  4. Take the enchanted book from the output. The described result is an item without its enchantments and a book carrying them.

The project description also says it can move the top enchantment from an enchanted book onto a normal or already enchanted book. Check the version-specific instructions for the exact slot arrangement and behavior.

Disgrind: choose which enchantment to extract

  1. Check the Disgrind project page for a build matching your game version and Fabric or NeoForge setup, and install its stated Balm dependency.
  2. Put the enchanted item in the grindstone with a normal book to extract the bottommost enchantment.
  3. For position-based selection, use a written book or book and quill and enter the comma-separated positions as described on the project page. The page also documents an asterisk selection rule; consult its instructions for the exact syntax and result.

Disgrind’s selective controls are distinct from the all-at-once behavior described for Grind Enchantments. Do not assume the two mods use the same book inputs, selection order, or costs.

Use a dedicated Disenchanter instead

If you prefer a separate block rather than changing grindstone behavior, Disenchanting Forge describes a Disenchanter that transfers the first enchantment from an item to a book. Its page says shift-clicking the output can attempt to transfer all enchantments when you have enough experience and books. This is a different workflow from placing a book in a modded grindstone.

Check compatibility before installing

Minecraft mods are not interchangeable across editions, loaders, or versions. The cited projects describe Java Edition mod setups; the available descriptions do not establish that these options work on Bedrock Edition, nor do they settle support for custom enchantments.

  • Confirm the edition and exact Minecraft version used by your world.
  • Match the mod’s loader—such as Fabric or NeoForge—to the loader used by that installation.
  • Check the project page for required dependencies and supported release files.
  • If you play on a server, check whether the mod is required on the server, client, or both; do not assume single-player instructions apply.
  • Review modpack guidance and known conflicts before adding a mod to an existing world.
  • Back up the world before changing its mod setup.
