To swap columns and rows, transpose the range. In Excel, copy the cells, choose an empty destination, and select Paste > Transpose for a one-time rearrangement. If the result must keep updating, enter =TRANSPOSE(A1:B4) instead. In Google Sheets, use the same formula pattern, such as =TRANSPOSE(A2:F9); a source with m rows and n columns becomes a result with n rows and m columns.
The safest workflow is to leave clear space for the output, avoid cutting the source, and check formulas after the swap. Excel’s menu command and formula method behave differently, and Excel Tables require an extra step before the menu command works.

Use Excel’s Paste Transpose command when you need a separate, fixed copy of the data. The original range remains in place until you decide to remove it.
- Select the complete source range, including any headings you want to rotate.
- Choose Copy. Do not use Cut for this procedure.
- Click the top-left cell of a destination area with enough empty room for the rotated result.
- Open Excel’s paste options and choose Paste > Transpose.
- Inspect the pasted range, including labels, formulas, number formats and borders, before deleting the source.
A source that is four rows by two columns will produce a result that is two rows by four columns. Excel warns that pasting can overwrite content, so select a destination that does not overlap the source and that has no important cells underneath it.

What does Paste Transpose carry over?
The command pastes the copied cell content and can include formatting. Formulas are also pasted, but their references may be adjusted for the new location. Treat the result as a new range rather than assuming every formula still points to the intended cells.
When can I delete the original range?
Delete the source only after checking the output. Because Paste Transpose creates a separate pasted table, later edits to the original do not drive the transposed copy.

Enter the TRANSPOSE function when the rotated range should reflect later edits to the source. For example, if the source is in cells A1 through B4, enter:
=TRANSPOSE(A1:B4)
Replace A1:B4 with the actual source range. Excel returns the rows and columns in reversed orientation, and a change in the source is reflected in the formula result.
What happens in current Microsoft 365 Excel?
Current Excel versions that support dynamic arrays need only the formula and Enter. Excel spills the result into the cells required by the transposed dimensions. Keep those spill cells clear; otherwise the formula cannot display the complete array.
How does the formula work in older Excel versions?
Legacy versions require you to select the entire output range first, type the TRANSPOSE formula, and confirm it with Ctrl+Shift+Enter. The selected output must have the reversed dimensions of the source. For a four-row by two-column source, select a two-row by four-column destination before confirming the array formula.

Can I turn a linked result into fixed values?
After the formula has produced the desired orientation, copy the result and paste values over the same area. This removes the formula connection while retaining the displayed values. Use that only when future source edits should no longer flow into the rotated range.
What happens to formulas and cell references during an Excel transpose?
A transposition changes where a formula is placed, so Excel may adjust references in the pasted version. Review relative, absolute and mixed references instead of assuming the formula’s logic is unchanged.
- Relative references can move with the formula’s new position.
- Absolute references, such as
$A$1, remain locked to their specified row and column. - Mixed references, such as
A$1or$A1, lock only one coordinate and can therefore behave differently after the move.
For a one-time paste, click through representative formulas and compare their precedents with the original. For a TRANSPOSE formula, verify the source range itself and check any formulas inside that source before relying on the live output.
Can I transpose an Excel Table with Paste Transpose?
Not directly with the documented Paste Transpose command. Excel Tables use structured table behavior, so convert the table to an ordinary range first, then copy and paste-transpose it, or use the TRANSPOSE function against the table’s data.
How do I convert the Table to a range?
- Click any cell in the Table.
- Use the Table tools to choose the command that converts the Table to a range.
- Confirm the conversion, then select the resulting range and use Copy.
- Choose a clear destination and select Paste > Transpose.
Converting removes the Table’s structured features. If you need those features to remain, use a formula-based approach instead and check how your header and data references behave.
How do I transpose rows and columns in Google Sheets?
Google Sheets’ documented method is the TRANSPOSE(array_or_range) function. Click an empty destination cell and enter a formula such as:
Also popular on Amazon
=TRANSPOSE(A2:F9)
Replace A2:F9 with the range you want to rotate. Google defines the function as transposing the rows and columns of an array or range. An m-by-n source produces an n-by-m result.
How should I choose the Sheets destination?
Place the formula in the cell that should become the top-left corner of the output and leave enough empty cells to the right and below it. For example, A2:F9 has eight rows and five columns, so its result occupies five rows and eight columns starting from the formula cell.
Include the header row or header column in the referenced range when it must rotate with the data. If you select only the body, the labels stay outside the result and will not line up automatically.
Does the Google Sheets result stay connected?
Yes. The function-based result is driven by the referenced range, so editing that source changes the transposed output. To make a snapshot, copy the output and paste values in its place after checking it.
What is the difference between Paste Transpose and TRANSPOSE?
Choose based on whether you need a fixed copy or a live relationship with the source.
| Method | Excel | Google Sheets | Best use | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paste Transpose | Available for ordinary ranges | The documented guidance centers on the function method | One-time rearrangement | Creates a separate pasted range; copied content can include formatting; destination content may be overwritten |
TRANSPOSE |
=TRANSPOSE(source_range) |
=TRANSPOSE(source_range) |
Output that should follow source edits | Reverses the source dimensions; Excel entry differs between dynamic-array and legacy versions |
A static paste is easier to hand-edit independently. A linked formula avoids rebuilding the rotated view when source values change, but it occupies an output area that must remain available and can require formula troubleshooting.

How do I calculate the output size before transposing?
Count the source rows and columns, then reverse those counts. The source’s row count becomes the output’s column count, while the source’s column count becomes the output’s row count.
| Source shape | Transposed shape | Example result placement |
|---|---|---|
| 4 rows × 2 columns | 2 rows × 4 columns | A formula entered in D1 fills D1:G2 |
| 8 rows × 5 columns | 5 rows × 8 columns | A formula entered in A1 fills A1:H5 |
The examples describe the dimensions only; the exact starting cell is your choice. Planning the footprint first prevents an output from running into existing labels, calculations or other tables.
What should I check before and after a transpose?
A short validation pass catches most errors before the rotated range is used in a report or calculation.
Before you run the command or formula
- Confirm that the selected range includes every row, column and heading needed in the result.
- Choose a destination outside the source with sufficient horizontal and vertical space.
- Save or note any important content in the destination because a paste can overwrite it.
- Decide whether the output should be static or remain linked to future source edits.
After the result appears
- Compare the first and last labels to ensure the orientation is correct.
- Check that the output has the expected reversed dimensions.
- Inspect representative formulas and references, especially when using Excel Paste Transpose.
- Review number formats, dates, percentages and borders because the pasted result may not look identical to the source in every case.
- Only remove the original after the result passes those checks.
How do I fix common transpose problems?
The pasted result overwrote existing cells
Undo immediately if the overwritten content matters. Re-run the operation in a blank area that does not intersect the source or other work, and make sure the destination is large enough for the reversed dimensions.
The formula will not display the whole result
Clear cells in the expected output footprint and re-enter the formula. In current Excel and Google Sheets, a formula result needs room to expand from its top-left cell.
The output has the wrong orientation
Check the selected source. A transpose does not sort or rearrange individual records; it simply changes rows into columns and columns into rows. Include the header row or column in the source when those labels must rotate too.

Excel shows unexpected formula results
Compare references in the original and transposed formulas. Relative and mixed references can change because the formula has a new placement, while absolute references remain locked. Correct the formula or use fixed values when the output no longer needs to calculate.
The Paste Transpose option is unavailable
If the source is an Excel Table, convert it to a range before using the menu command. Alternatively, enter a TRANSPOSE formula against the source and review the resulting references.

Use Paste Transpose when the rotated table is a one-time deliverable that should be edited independently. Use TRANSPOSE when the source is maintained elsewhere and the rotated view should update automatically.
For a shared workbook, keep the source and linked output clearly labeled, protect or reserve the output area from manual entry, and document whether users may edit the result. For a static export, validate the pasted copy first, then remove the source only if the surrounding workbook no longer depends on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a transposed range update when I edit the original cells?
Only a result created with the TRANSPOSE function remains connected to its source. A Paste Transpose result is a separate copy, so changing the original range does not refresh it.
Why does an older Excel version need Ctrl+Shift+Enter for TRANSPOSE?
Older Excel releases treat the function as a traditional array formula rather than a dynamic array. Selecting the full output range and pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter tells Excel to calculate the array across those cells.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I rotate headings along with the data?
Select the heading row or column as part of the source range before transposing. If the labels are excluded, only the selected data rotates and the headings remain in their original orientation.
What does an m-by-n range become after transposition?
The dimensions reverse: m rows and n columns become n rows and m columns. This lets you reserve the correct output footprint before entering a formula or pasting.
