Use the in-game Controls or Settings screen to find the weapon-swap command. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse does not have one universally documented weapon-switch button in the published native controls reference. The button for Arcana spells is documented: Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox, and X on Nintendo Switch. PC defaults are not published in that reference, so PC players should inspect and, if necessary, rebind their keyboard or controller layout.
The game separates its equipment into seven weapon families and its abilities into a flexible Arcana system. The whip is also a movement tool, not merely a standard attack. Belmont’s Curse has two related but distinct systems:

- Weapons: Your equipped weapon determines the basic attack you perform. The inventory is described as 28 weapons divided among seven families: whips, one-handed swords, two-handed swords, dual blades, spears, fists, and weapon-and-shield.
- Arcana: A separate system for abilities and spells. GamesRadar+ describes seven weapon families, four weapons in each family, and an Arcana system that lets you change abilities for different enemy types.
Weapons are found through exploration and chests. Arcana abilities and spells belong to the Arcana system rather than being additional weapons in the inventory. That distinction matters when you are looking for the correct command: changing equipment and casting an Arcana ability are separate actions.

How to switch weapons with the native controls
The available native controls reference lists attacks, movement, dodging, healing and Arcana, but it does not publish one universal button for changing weapon types. The safest procedure works on every supported platform because it relies on the game’s own binding display:
- Pause the game and open Settings or Controls.
- Look for a command named weapon swap, weapon type, cycle weapon, equipment or similar wording. The exact label can vary with the build and platform.
- Press the button shown beside that command, then confirm that the currently equipped weapon or weapon family changes on the HUD or character.
- If the command is unassigned or inconvenient, use the same screen to bind it to an available keyboard key or controller button.
- Return to gameplay and test the new binding while standing still before relying on it in a fight.
Do not assume that a D-pad direction, shoulder button or a particular PC key is universal. The published reference does not establish one cross-platform default, and controller layouts can differ between editions and custom profiles.

When a reader asks for the “spell button,” they are asking about Arcana. Press the platform button shown above, then use the Arcana selection shown by the game to choose the ability you want. Do not confuse that command with weapon cycling.
Understanding the seven weapon families
The inventory guide identifies 28 weapons across seven families, which works out to four weapons per family:

The family names tell you the broad weapon format, but the available material does not assign a complete range, damage, speed or special-move chart to every individual weapon. Treat each family as a starting point for experimentation rather than assuming that all four weapons behave identically.

A practical way to test a newly found weapon
- Equip it from the game’s weapon interface using the weapon-swap command shown in Controls.
- Perform the normal attack while stationary so you can see its reach and recovery without movement changing the result.
- Repeat while moving and while approaching an enemy from different angles. Note whether the attack encourages close, mid-range or spacing-based play.
- Try the attack near a ledge, hook point or gap only after confirming that the weapon itself does not replace the whip’s traversal function.
- Pair the weapon with an Arcana ability and observe whether the spell covers a weakness that the weapon’s attack pattern leaves open.
This process avoids an easy mistake: assuming that “weapon ability” means a separate button for every weapon. The documented systems are the equipped weapon’s attack behavior, the Arcana spell command and the whip’s traversal functions.
What counts as a weapon ability?
In Belmont’s Curse, weapon abilities are best understood as three layers working together.
1. The equipped weapon’s attack behavior
Each weapon family changes the way your ordinary attack is delivered. A one-handed sword, two-handed sword, dual blades, spear, fists, whip or weapon-and-shield setup presents a different attack pattern. The available data does not provide frame data or a complete special-attack list, so the reliable advice is to judge the weapon by its actual animation, reach, recovery and movement while testing it in a safe area.

2. Arcana spells and abilities
Arcana is the game’s flexible ability system. Use Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox or X on Switch to activate the Arcana/spell command. On PC, use the binding displayed in your own Controls screen. Arcana is separate from the weapon inventory, so switching to another weapon does not by itself cast or change an Arcana spell.
3. The whip’s combat and traversal role
The whip has an important role beyond ordinary damage. Developer Nouaille, quoted by PC Gamer, explains: “The whip is not just a tool for traversal. It’s used for both combat and traversal.” Reviews describe the Holy Whip/Vampire Killer as a grappling and movement tool for hooks, enemies and gaps. In practical terms, the whip can be part of your route through an area as well as part of your attack plan. A weapon swap therefore does not eliminate the need to understand when the whip is the correct tool for movement.

The native controls reference does not document a universal weapon-swap input or a complete set of timing rules for unmodified combat. You should therefore verify the command and its behavior in your own build before treating rapid mid-fight switching as guaranteed.

A community modification called Quick Switch documents a more explicit workflow, but its behavior belongs to the mod, not the standard game controls:
- D-pad left/right: cycle weapon types.
- D-pad up/down: cycle Arcana.
- Held directional input: open a weapon wheel or Arcana-card selector.
The same documentation describes context-sensitive timing. A request is immediate while the character is standing or running. During a ground attack, it occurs when the attack reaches its movement-cancel point. While airborne, casting or staggered, the request queues until control returns and expires after four seconds. Those details can help explain how the mod feels, but they must not be presented as universal rules for an unmodified copy of Belmont’s Curse.

Because the mod changes the control scheme, its D-pad mapping is not evidence of a default PlayStation, Xbox, Switch or PC binding. If you are troubleshooting a standard installation, return to the native Controls screen rather than copying the mod’s layout.

Before entering a difficult room
- Open Controls/Settings and identify both the weapon-swap command and the Arcana command.
- Check which weapon is currently equipped and make sure the weapon you intend to use has actually been obtained from exploration or a chest.
- Confirm that your Arcana selection is the ability you expect before the encounter begins.
- Test the weapon’s normal attack and the Arcana button in a safe area so you know which input performs which action.
During a fight
- Use the equipped weapon’s attack pattern for the spacing you have available.
- Use Arcana when a spell or ability better fits the enemy situation; the system is designed to let you change abilities for different enemy types.
- Use the whip when the route, a hook, an enemy position or a gap requires its traversal function, even if another weapon is currently your preferred damage tool.
- If your weapon-swap input does not respond, stop attacking and check whether the command is bound correctly. Do not assume that a delayed response is a universal combat rule; the documented queue and four-second expiry belong to Quick Switch.
After changing weapons
Recheck your spacing. A new family can alter reach, movement and recovery, so the attack that worked from the previous weapon’s distance may no longer connect safely. Because the available controls documentation does not publish full weapon statistics, direct observation is more reliable than a generic ranking of the seven families.
Troubleshooting weapon and Arcana inputs
The weapon does not change
- Pause and open Controls/Settings to verify the exact weapon-swap label and button.
- Check whether the binding is unassigned or conflicts with another command.
- Make sure you have collected more than one weapon; weapons are acquired through exploration and chests.
- If you are using Quick Switch, confirm that the mod is active and remember that a queued request can wait until control returns from an attack, cast, airborne state or stagger.
Arcana does not activate
- Use Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox or X on Switch.
- On PC, look up the current Arcana binding in the in-game layout instead of relying on a console button.
- Verify that an Arcana ability is selected. Weapon cycling and Arcana selection are separate systems.
The whip seems different from other weapons
That is expected from the documented design. The whip serves both combat and traversal, including grappling and movement across gaps. Evaluate it as both an attack and a movement tool rather than comparing it only by ordinary damage.
