To talk to other players in a Roblox experience, press / on your keyboard or tap the chat icon, type a message, then press Enter or Return. This works only when chat is enabled in that experience and your account is eligible. Voice chat is also available to eligible users aged 13 or older in supported regions and experiences.
How to use text chat in a Roblox experience
- Open chat. While inside an experience, press / on your keyboard or tap the chat icon near the top left of the screen.
- Type your message. Enter it in the chat bar.
- Send it. Press Enter or Return.
Experience Chat connects you with other users in the same experience and ends when you leave it. The experience developer can disable chat, so the chat icon or bar may not appear. If pressing / does not open chat on your keyboard layout, Roblox suggests trying the backslash key. See Roblox’s Experience Chat guidance.
Why chat may be unavailable
Roblox requires an age check before communication features can be enabled. Access can depend on your age group, account settings, parental permissions, and region. Roblox says users ages 5–9 need parental consent to enable Experience chat, and users under 16 need parental consent to enable Direct chat. Regional restrictions may also apply. These requirements are separate from whether a particular experience has chat turned on.
To check the Experience chat setting on an individual account, go to Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication → Experience chat. For a child account managed by a parent, Roblox lists Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication → Experience chat. How to use voice chat
Voice Chat lets you talk aloud rather than type. Roblox’s current guidance requires users to be at least 13 and complete an age check to turn it on. It is available only in supported regions and experiences that enable voice.
- In a supported experience, connect using the headphone icon or the Voice Chat toggle in the experience settings.
- Use the voice controls to mute your microphone or disconnect when you are finished.
Phone verification is not a valid way to qualify for voice chat under Roblox’s updated instructions. Check Roblox’s Voice Chat instructions for eligibility and controls.

Keep chat safe
Roblox says Experience chat is filtered to block inappropriate content and personally identifiable information. You can also limit who is allowed to communicate with you, and mute or block other users or report messages that violate chat policies. Use those controls if an interaction becomes uncomfortable; Roblox describes them in its chat, privacy, and filtering safety guidance.
Do not share private or sensitive details such as your address, phone number, or financial information. Roblox specifically warns that it cannot guarantee the privacy or safety of information shared in chats with fewer filters. Its guidance on voice chat and unfiltered texting explains this risk.
