You can’t tame an angry, hostile wolf with bones. Stop attacking it, move to a safe distance, and wait until it is no longer hostile. Then use bones on it: each bone has a one-in-three chance of taming a wild wolf, so you may need more than one.
Why bones won’t tame an angry wolf
Minecraft’s official bone guide says a bone used on a hostile wolf has a zero-in-three chance of taming it—and carries a high risk of injury. Bones work on wild wolves, not wolves that are currently hostile.
How to calm the situation and tame the wolf
- Stop attacking the wolf. Wolves become angry and fight back when attacked, according to Minecraft’s wolf overview. Don’t keep hitting it or approach while it is still hostile.
- Keep your distance and wait. The official sources do not give a universal cooldown or exact calming time. Don’t assume a fixed number of seconds; wait until the wolf is no longer hostile before trying to tame it.
- Use bones once it is wild again. Each bone has a one-in-three chance of taming a wild wolf, so the number required varies. If it does not tame on the first try, keep using bones only while the wolf is no longer hostile.
What wolf armor can—and can’t—do
Wolf armor is not a way to calm or tame an angry wolf. Minecraft’s Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes specify that armor can be equipped only on a tame adult wolf; it is crafted and repaired with armadillo scutes. Tame the wolf first, then consider armor for protection.
Edition and version context
The taming guidance above comes from Minecraft’s official bone article and wolf overview. Later update notes add edition-specific details rather than a different angry-wolf taming method: the Java Edition 1.20.5 notes describe nine biome-linked wolf variants, while the Bedrock 1.20.80 notes, released April 23, 2024, record 40 health points (20 hearts) for tamed wolves and variant changes. These notes do not establish a different procedure for calming or taming a hostile wolf. Game mechanics can change in later updates, so check the behavior in your version if it differs from this guidance.
