The easiest way to stop hostile silverfish from being a problem is to set your world to Peaceful difficulty. This affects hostile mobs broadly, not silverfish alone. If you want to keep the current difficulty and are dealing with an infested block, leave it unbroken or mine it with Silk Touch to obtain the ordinary equivalent block without releasing a silverfish.

Set the world to Peaceful

Peaceful is the straightforward, world-wide option if you do not want hostile silverfish. Use the game’s difficulty setting and choose Peaceful. The exact menu path can vary by edition and platform; look for the world’s difficulty setting in its game or world settings.

This changes the broader hostile-mob experience rather than adding a silverfish-only switch. If you want to keep other hostile mobs active, use the infested-block approach below instead.

Use the command instead

If commands are enabled and you have permission to use them, enter /difficulty peaceful. Minecraft’s command guide documents peaceful as a difficulty argument and explains that commands require the appropriate settings and permissions.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

In a Bedrock singleplayer world, enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that world, even if you later turn cheats off. Consider that consequence before enabling cheats just to run the command.

Avoid releasing silverfish from infested blocks

Infested blocks resemble familiar stone-family blocks. Breaking one releases a silverfish, as described in Minecraft.net’s Block of the Month: Infested Block. If you suspect a block is infested, the simplest local fix is to leave it unbroken.

  • The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
  • Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
  • Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
  • Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more

If you need to collect it, use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Minecraft’s guidance says this gives you the ordinary equivalent block rather than an infested block, without releasing the silverfish. This lets you preserve your current difficulty and the rest of your hostile-mob gameplay.

Why not turn off all mob spawning?

The doMobSpawning setting is a broad control, not a silverfish-only toggle. Community feedback discusses using doMobSpawning false to affect mob spawning and notes it can also affect peaceful mob spawning; behavior may vary by edition and version. It is not a good selective fix if your goal is simply to remove silverfish while keeping other mobs and ordinary world behavior.

Choose the fix that matches the problem

Approach What it changes What you need Best fit
Peaceful difficulty Broadly changes hostile-mob gameplay for the world Access to the world difficulty setting, or command access to use /difficulty peaceful You want to avoid hostile silverfish and are comfortable changing the wider hostile-mob experience
Leave infested blocks alone or use Silk Touch Handles the local block trigger without changing difficulty Ability to identify or avoid suspicious blocks; Silk Touch if you need to mine one You want other hostile mobs active and need to avoid releasing silverfish from infested blocks

Silverfish mechanics can differ by edition and version, especially around infested blocks and spawners. The Minecraft Wiki’s silverfish reference includes Java-specific behavior; check the details for your edition before relying on a particular mechanic beyond the basic options above.
