Run a controlled on/off test in the same game scene before blaming frame generation. Keep resolution, upscaling, graphics settings, window mode, frame cap, driver profile, display refresh rate, VSync and VRR unchanged. Record base FPS, generated FPS and any latency indicator, then compare displayed frame-time consistency and controller response—not the FPS counter alone.
If the symptom disappears when frame generation is disabled, it is involved in the problem. If it remains, investigate the game’s base frame pacing, CPU or GPU saturation, display path and controller separately. A higher generated-FPS number never proves lower input latency.

What frame generation can—and cannot—do
Frame generation inserts synthetic images between conventionally rendered frames. The game still has to render each real, or base, frame that contains current game simulation and input. Generated frames can make camera movement look smoother, but they do not remove the rendering time required for those base frames. The extra processing and presentation steps can also add latency.
NVIDIA describes DLSS Frame Generation as using AI to generate frames while maintaining responsiveness with NVIDIA Reflex. AMD warns that AFMF can introduce additional latency and may be unsuitable for fast competitive games. Those statements describe intended behavior, not a guarantee for every game, driver, display or settings combination.

Frame generation therefore affects two separate things:
- Perceived motion: how often the display receives images, including generated ones.
- Input-to-photon response: how long it takes an input to appear in a displayed image.
Those values can move in opposite directions. A counter may show a much higher output rate while the latest controller input still waits for the next base frame, a queued present or a display refresh.
The repeatable A/B test
Use one repeatable scene rather than comparing a menu, a quiet corridor and a busy battle. Choose a camera path and controller action that expose the symptom, such as a fixed turn, a repeated strafe or a consistent aim sweep. The procedure below is an editorial diagnostic method built around the variables documented by NVIDIA and AMD; it is not a vendor benchmark.
- Choose the test scene. Record a save point, replay segment or benchmark run that you can repeat. Use the same route, camera movement and controller input every time. Avoid changing scenes between runs.
- Record the display path. Note the monitor or television refresh rate, whether variable refresh rate (VRR) is enabled, the game’s VSync setting and any driver-level VSync override. Record windowed, borderless or exclusive-fullscreen mode.
- Record rendering settings. Write down resolution, upscaler mode and quality, ray-tracing options, texture and shadow settings, frame cap, driver profile, frame-generation mode and multiplier. Do not change these between runs.
- Record a baseline. Disable frame generation, launch the same scene and perform the same input. Capture base FPS, frame-time behavior and any in-game latency indicator. If the game exposes a latency graph, save that reading as well as the average FPS.
- Run the generated-frame pass. Enable only the frame-generation option. Keep every other setting and the controller path unchanged. Record base FPS, generated FPS, frame-time behavior, latency indicators and how the input feels.
- Repeat for confidence. Run each condition more than once if the scene has streaming, shader compilation or variable enemy behavior. A result that occurs once but cannot be reproduced is a lead, not a diagnosis.
Use the same cap and synchronization state for the first comparison. After that, change one presentation variable at a time to identify queueing or synchronization effects.
What to measure instead of trusting average FPS
Displayed frame timing
A present-call counter can look regular even when the displayed image arrives late or unevenly. NVIDIA’s Streamline guidance says MsBetweenPresents is not suitable for judging DLSS-G frame-pacing quality because DLSS-G can delay the image after Present() has been called. The recommended value is MsBetweenDisplayChange, which measures the interval between actual display changes.

NVIDIA FrameView, identified in the Streamline guidance as of version 16.1, uses MsBetweenDisplayChange and is the recommended tool there for measuring frame-pacing quality. Use it to compare the same scene with generation off and on, rather than comparing unrelated runs.
Frame-time consistency and 1% lows
Look for spikes, repeated long frames and uneven pacing. FrameView exposes a 1% low-FPS stutter metric and supports per-frame latency; NVIDIA states that it is compatible with DLSS 4 Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation. A lower average FPS with stable frame times can feel better than a higher average with periodic long frames.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not treat a 1% low as a complete latency measurement. It summarizes the slowest portion of the run. Pair it with the displayed-time trace and the controller action you used in the scene.
Input response
Use a repeatable visual action: start a turn at the same point, hold the same stick direction for the same duration and release at the same landmark. Record whether the generated pass shows a consistent delay, intermittent hitching or merely smoother motion. There is no authoritative universal controller-latency threshold that separates acceptable from unacceptable behavior, so report the measured difference and conditions instead of inventing a cutoff.
DLSS Frame Generation and AFMF: diagnostic differences
| Diagnostic axis | DLSS Frame Generation (DLSS-G) | AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is enabled | Integrated in the game through NVIDIA’s DLSS/Streamline path. | Enabled through AMD software or driver support rather than requiring the same type of per-game integration. |
| Latency companion | NVIDIA Reflex. NVIDIA’s documentation says proper Reflex integration is required for frame generation. | AMD Radeon Anti-Lag. AMD recommends combining AFMF with Anti-Lag for the optimal experience. |
| Telemetry | NVIDIA FrameView, including display-change timing, per-frame latency and a 1% low-FPS stutter metric. | AMD Adrenalin’s in-game activity monitor can confirm that frame generation is active. |
| Synchronization guidance | Check VSync, VRR, refresh rate and the presentation queue. NVIDIA documents queue growth when high generation multipliers feed a low-refresh display with VSync enabled. | AMD’s current AFMF guidance lists VSync disabled in both driver and game settings and recommends a FreeSync monitor. |
| Vendor base-FPS guidance | No universal minimum threshold is stated in the cited NVIDIA guidance. | AMD’s 2023 AFMF preview notes specify 55 FPS at 1080p and 70 FPS at 1440p or above. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not a universal rule. |
The two systems should not be diagnosed with identical counters. DLSS-G needs display-change timing to avoid mistaking a delayed post-present image for good pacing. AFMF needs its activity monitor and the driver/game synchronization conditions checked explicitly.

Why frame generation may feel like stutter or lag
1. The base frame is still the timing bottleneck
Generated images do not replace real frames. If the game is producing base frames slowly or irregularly, the controller still waits on that base-frame schedule even when the output counter is high. AFMF’s warning about additional latency is especially important in fast competitive titles, where a small delay can be more noticeable than smoother camera motion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In the A/B test, compare the base FPS in both passes. If the base rate falls or its frame-time spikes grow when generation is enabled, the feature may be consuming resources or interacting with the game’s workload. If base timing is unchanged but displayed timing becomes uneven, focus on presentation and synchronization.
2. Presentation queueing from VSync, refresh rate and multipliers
NVIDIA documents a specific queueing pattern: a high frame-generation multiplier can produce images faster than a low-refresh display presents them when VSync is enabled. Frames accumulate in the presentation path, and the controller appears delayed even though the output counter is high.
Test this without changing rendering quality:
- Keep the scene and cap fixed, then use a lower generation multiplier if the game exposes one.
- Repeat on a higher-refresh display when available.
- Test the VSync and VRR combination one variable at a time, documenting every state.
Do not change VSync, VRR and the frame cap simultaneously. If all three move, you will not know which setting removed the queue.
3. Incorrect latency integration
NVIDIA’s Streamline checklist warns that incorrect frame values or Reflex integration can increase input latency and stutter. This matters after a game update, a mod installation or a driver change, when the game’s frame-generation and latency interfaces may no longer agree.

For a DLSS-G title, verify that Reflex is enabled as the game documents it, then repeat the same scene. If the problem appears only after an update or only with a modded executable, test the unmodified game and the current driver profile before changing graphics quality. A broken integration can make the feature look guilty even when the underlying rendering load is not the primary cause.
4. Measuring the wrong event
With DLSS-G, counting Present() calls can hide the delay between submission and the actual display change. That is why a regular present graph is not enough. Use FrameView’s display-change timing and inspect the 1% lows and per-frame latency. If the present intervals look smooth but display-change intervals contain spikes, the measurement method—not the game’s visual output—is the source of the misleading result.
5. AFMF display and driver conditions
AMD’s current AFMF page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, DirectX 11 and 12, Vulkan and OpenGL, and recommends a FreeSync monitor. It also lists VSync disabled in both the driver and the game. If AFMF is being evaluated under a different synchronization setup, reproduce the test under AMD’s documented conditions before drawing a conclusion.
Use the Adrenalin in-game activity monitor to confirm that AFMF is actually active. A run in which the feature silently disengages is not a valid comparison with a run in which it is generating frames.
DLSS-G troubleshooting sequence
- Run the baseline with DLSS Frame Generation off and capture FrameView’s displayed-time behavior, latency and 1% low metric.
- Enable DLSS Frame Generation without changing resolution, upscaling, graphics quality, cap, VSync, VRR or display mode.
- Enable NVIDIA Reflex according to the game’s latency settings, then repeat the scene. Record the exact Reflex mode rather than writing only “on.”
- Compare
MsBetweenDisplayChange, frame-time spikes and per-frame latency. Do not substituteMsBetweenPresentsfor display-change timing. - If latency is present only in the generated pass, test a lower multiplier or frame cap while holding synchronization settings fixed.
- Test VSync and VRR states separately. If a low-refresh display with VSync produces a queue, a higher refresh rate or a different synchronization arrangement may remove it.
- If the problem started after a patch, mod or driver change, repeat with the current unmodified game and a clean driver profile. Incorrect frame-index or Reflex integration remains a plausible cause.
AFMF troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm that the operating system, graphics API and game meet AMD’s documented support conditions: Windows 10 or 11 and a supported DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Vulkan or OpenGL path.
- Disable VSync in both the AMD driver and the game, as listed in AMD’s current AFMF guidance. Record whether VRR is active and whether the display supports FreeSync.
- Run the repeatable scene with AFMF off, then on, without changing the other graphics settings.
- Use the Adrenalin in-game activity monitor to verify that AFMF generated frames during the test.
- Enable Radeon Anti-Lag and repeat the same input. AMD recommends Anti-Lag with AFMF because AFMF can add latency.
- Compare displayed smoothness and controller response against the base-frame rate. Use AMD’s 55 FPS at 1080p and 70 FPS at 1440p-or-higher guidance as a starting point, not as proof that every game below those values will stutter.
- If the symptom remains, test the display path and base rendering with AFMF disabled. A persistent issue is not solely an AFMF problem.
How to interpret the A/B result
| Result | Most useful interpretation | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| Stutter and lag appear only with generation on; base settings are unchanged. | Frame generation or its presentation/latency integration is involved. | Measure display-change timing, enable Reflex or Anti-Lag, then test multiplier, cap and synchronization separately. |
| Average FPS rises, but display-change spikes and controller delay increase. | The output counter is hiding presentation delay or queueing. | For DLSS-G, use MsBetweenDisplayChange; test low-refresh VSync and generation multiplier conditions. |
| Motion is smoother, but controller response is consistently later. | Added generation and base-frame latency may be the trade-off. | Compare the same input with generation off; decide based on the game’s control demands rather than the FPS number. |
| The problem occurs with generation off and on. | Frame generation is not the sole cause. | Investigate base frame pacing, CPU/GPU saturation, display path and controller behavior. |
| AFMF appears enabled in settings but not in telemetry. | The feature may be inactive for that run. | Check the Adrenalin activity monitor and supported API, operating system and synchronization conditions. |
When frame generation is not the culprit
If disabling generation leaves the same hitch at the same camera landmark, isolate the rest of the chain. First inspect the base frame-time trace for CPU or GPU saturation and streaming spikes. Then check the display path: refresh rate, VRR state, VSync behavior, cable or output mode and any external frame cap. Finally test the controller in another game or menu to separate an input-device problem from a rendering problem.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
This isolation matters because a game can have poor base pacing that becomes more visible when generated frames make the average counter look healthy. It is also possible for a display or controller issue to feel like frame-generation lag even when the generated pass has the same displayed timing as the baseline.
A practical test record
Keep one short record for every run so that settings do not drift:
- Game version, driver version and whether mods are installed.
- Display refresh rate, VRR state, VSync state and window mode.
- Resolution, upscaler, graphics preset, frame cap and generation mode or multiplier.
- Base FPS, generated FPS, displayed-time behavior, 1% low metric and per-frame latency when available.
- Reflex or Anti-Lag state.
- The exact scene, camera path and controller action.
- Whether the symptom was a repeatable hitch, a constant delay or a subjective smoothness difference.
Writing these fields down prevents a common diagnostic error: enabling frame generation while also changing the cap, VSync or upscaler, then attributing every difference to one feature.

What the evidence does not establish
There is no universal controller-latency threshold, no universal minimum base-FPS requirement for every frame-generation implementation and no basis for saying that every stutter event comes from frame generation. AMD’s 55-FPS and 70-FPS figures are guidance from its 2023 AFMF preview notes. NVIDIA’s display-change recommendation applies specifically to the DLSS-G measurement problem described in its Streamline documentation.
NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 plugin package was updated in October 2026, but a package date does not establish identical behavior in every game. Treat game integration, driver version, synchronization and display hardware as part of the test conditions.
