Test an AI-generated Unreal Engine game in three separate tracks: deterministic automation for crashes and regressions, controlled server/client sessions for multiplayer and exploit scenarios, and a project-specific safety process for generated or user-submitted content. Unreal Engine’s Automation Test Framework covers unit, feature, and content-stress testing, while command-line runs, dedicated servers, Networking Insights, the Network Profiler, and Gauntlet provide ways to exercise and inspect networked builds. Those tools do not constitute an AI-content classifier or a complete security program. Your team must first establish when generation occurs, whether players can supply prompts or assets, which content is prohibited, and where blocking, review, and escalation happen.
What should you test first in an AI-generated Unreal game?
Start by identifying the failure mode, then choose the smallest test that can produce evidence for it. A map-load crash needs a content-stress pass; a replicated-state bug needs server and client sessions; an unsafe generated image or dialogue line needs policy tests around the project’s generation and moderation pipeline. Do not treat one broad playthrough as coverage for all three.

| Risk | Useful first test | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Editor, build, or runtime crash caused by generated content | Automation unit/feature checks plus content-stress loading and Blueprint compilation | Test results, logs, build identifier, generated inputs, and the failing asset or map |
| Replication, authority, or invalid-request defect | Repeatable server/client sessions, including a dedicated server where appropriate | Server and client logs, assertion results, and network traces or profiler captures |
| Unsafe AI-generated or user-submitted material | Policy-driven cases that exercise generation, filtering, blocking, review, and appeal paths | Input, generated output, policy decision, enforcement action, and reviewer outcome |
Use separate pass/fail gates for each risk. A successful automation run does not prove that a client cannot make an unauthorized request, and a clean network trace does not prove that generated content meets your safety rules.
How does Unreal’s Automation Test Framework help find crashes?
Epic describes the framework as supporting automated unit, feature, and content-stress testing. Its stated purpose is to increase stability by running repeatable checks through Unreal’s automation system; the official description says, “The Automation System provides the ability to perform automated unit, feature, and content stress testing using the power of the Unreal Message Bus to increase stability.” Read the current Automation Test Framework documentation for the engine version you build against.

Unit tests catch narrow logic failures
Use unit tests for isolated game code and data transformations: generation metadata parsing, spawn rules, inventory calculations, save/load serialization, or validation functions. Keep the inputs deterministic so a failure points to a specific condition rather than to a changing model response.
Feature and functional tests exercise gameplay paths
Functional tests operate at gameplay level. Examples include spawning a generated actor, interacting with it, completing an objective, changing a state, or transitioning between levels. Assert the condition that matters—such as an actor reaching an expected state—rather than merely checking that a level opened.

Epic gives loading all maps and loading and compiling all Blueprints as examples of content-stress checks. For an AI-assisted project, extend that inventory to generated maps, assets, materials, animation graphs, data assets, and Blueprint classes that your build can actually package. A stress pass can reveal missing references, compile errors, memory pressure, or load-time failures that a small functional scenario never visits.
Stress testing is not exhaustive runtime proof. Add project-owned scenarios such as repeated level transitions, boundary inputs, malformed generation metadata, and long sessions when those paths exist in your game. Label these as your test design rather than as an Unreal-prescribed checklist.
How do I make generated-content tests repeatable?
Record the exact generation input and resulting build state, then reset the test environment before the next run. This turns an intermittent crash into a case another developer can reproduce.
- Freeze the test subject. Store the prompt, seed or other generation parameters your system uses, model/configuration identifiers, and the generated asset or map revision. If generation is nondeterministic, retain the produced output as a fixture instead of regenerating it during the test.
- Assign a build identity. Keep the source revision, Unreal Engine version, platform target, packaged-build identifier, and relevant configuration beside the test results. This is project reproducibility practice, not an Unreal-managed record.
- Reset state. Delete or isolate files created by a test, restore known save data, clear temporary generated content, and return the world to a known starting condition. Epic’s automation guidance warns against assuming that the Editor or game is already in a particular state and recommends cleaning up files created by tests; see Configure Automation Tests in Unreal Engine.
- Separate fixtures from live generation. Run a fast deterministic suite on retained fixtures for every change, then run a broader generation sweep on a schedule or when the generation system changes. This prevents model variability from making every code change look flaky.
- Capture the failure bundle. Save logs, call stacks, screenshots or repro video where useful, the offending generated object, and the exact test name. Do not overwrite the fixture until triage is complete.
Where can I run Unreal automation tests?
Epic documents several execution routes: the Editor’s Test Automation interface, instances connected through Session Frontend, Unreal Frontend, and command-line execution. Choose the route that matches the evidence and repeatability your team needs; the available interface can vary by engine version and project configuration.

Editor runs for authoring and diagnosis
Use the Editor Test Automation interface while developing a test. It gives immediate feedback and is convenient for stepping through a failing functional test or inspecting generated content. Editor state can differ from a packaged build, so do not treat a passing Editor-only run as release coverage.

Connected sessions for broader environments
Session Frontend-connected instances and Unreal Frontend are useful when the test must run on separate processes, machines, or target configurations. Record which instance executed each test and retain logs from all participating processes.
Command-line runs for repeatable and reviewable reports
Epic’s command-line workflow uses Automation RunTest and supports exporting a report with -ReportExportPath. A CI job can invoke the automation command against a fixed build and write reports to an artifact directory, for example:
Automation RunTest <test-or-suite> -ReportExportPath=Saved/AutomationReports
The exact launcher and quoting depend on your project and platform; use the command-line syntax in Run Automation Tests in Unreal Engine. Publish the exported report with the build artifacts and fail the gate when a required test fails or crashes.
Which crash-focused test cases should an AI-generated game include?
Build cases from the ways your generator can produce invalid or unusually large content. Keep each case tied to an observable result so failures are actionable.
- Map inventory: load every generated map in a clean process, then unload it and continue to the next map.
- Blueprint inventory: compile every generated Blueprint and record compile failures separately from runtime crashes.
- Reference integrity: open generated assets that reference other assets, including deleted, renamed, or optional dependencies.
- Spawn and destruction: create and remove generated actors repeatedly, including the maximum count your design permits.
- Boundary data: exercise empty arrays, missing fields, extreme numeric values, oversized text, and invalid tags if your generation format can emit them.
- Transition loops: repeat level loads, checkpoint restores, respawns, and save/load cycles to expose leaks or stale references.
- Long sessions: run the real gameplay loop for a defined duration and monitor memory, log growth, and increasing error rates.
- Packaging path: test the packaged target, not only the Editor, whenever generated content is cooked, staged, or downloaded at runtime.
These scenarios are recommended project coverage. Epic’s documented examples establish map loading and Blueprint compilation as content-stress ideas, but they do not promise that this list catches every crash.
How do I test multiplayer and replicated behavior?
Use multiple controlled sessions and decide whether the topology is a listen server, a dedicated server, or several clients. Epic’s Testing and Debugging Networked Games in Unreal Engine guide describes setting player counts, running multiple Play windows, and launching a separate dedicated server.
Start with a topology matrix
| Topology | What it can reveal | Typical evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Single instance | Local gameplay and deterministic state transitions | Automation assertions and local logs |
| Multiple Play windows | Basic replication, ownership, join/leave behavior, and client divergence | Per-instance logs and observed state |
| Dedicated server plus clients | Server-authority assumptions, headless behavior, and deployment-specific faults | Server/client logs, session result, and network capture |
| Gauntlet-managed sessions | Repeatable launch and coordination of several processes | Session results and collected process output |
Assert authority and permissions
Translate your threat model into assertions: which process may create or destroy an actor, change currency or inventory, grant an ability, trigger a match result, or invoke an administrative action. Send valid and invalid requests from clients and verify the server’s resulting state, not just the client’s local display. Include reconnects, reordered actions, duplicate requests, and attempts to act on another player’s objects when those conditions are possible in your game.

This is test-planning advice, not an official Unreal exploit checklist. A passing session demonstrates the cases you wrote; it does not prove that an exploit is impossible.
Inspect traffic without confusing profiling with security
Networking Insights, available through Unreal Insights, is described as a network-traffic analysis component. The legacy Network Profiler provides a higher-level view of bandwidth and individual Actors, Properties, or RPCs. Use these tools to find unexpected traffic, excessive replication, or an RPC that fires when it should not. A trace can diagnose behavior, but it is not a security assurance by itself.
What is Gauntlet useful for?
Gauntlet is suited to orchestrating multi-process test sessions. Epic’s Gauntlet Automation Framework documentation describes launching combinations such as a server and clients and validating session results.
Use a Gauntlet scenario when process startup, synchronization, shutdown, or result collection is part of the failure. For example, launch a dedicated server, wait for readiness, connect two clients, run a replicated gameplay case, collect each process’s logs, and mark the session failed if an assertion or process exits unexpectedly. Keep the gameplay assertion itself in the test code so that orchestration and game logic remain diagnosable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat multiplayer limitation must I account for?
Epic documents a specific limitation: “Setting up a functional test that runs across multiple instances, such as both the Client and the Server, is not currently supported.” That means you should not present one cross-instance functional test as complete replication verification.
Instead, combine supported approaches: run server and client processes under a session orchestrator such as Gauntlet, place assertions in the appropriate process, exchange explicit test signals, and inspect logs and traces. The exact coordination mechanism is project-specific; document it so a failed replication case can be replayed outside the Editor.
How should I test suspected exploits?
Begin with a threat model rather than a generic “hack test.” List valuable state, trusted operations, roles, and the messages a client can send. Convert each risk into a repeatable assertion about server authority and resulting state.

Build an abuse-case table
| Abuse case | Assertion | Useful setup |
|---|---|---|
| Client changes a server-owned value | The server rejects or ignores the request and retains the valid value | Two clients plus server logging |
| Client invokes an action without permission | No protected state changes and an appropriate event is recorded | Accounts or roles with different permissions |
| Duplicate or replayed request | The operation is idempotent or rejected according to design | Captured request fixture and repeated send |
| Malformed or out-of-range payload | Input is rejected safely without a crash or partial mutation | Boundary and invalid-data fixtures |
| Targeting another player’s object | Ownership or authorization checks prevent the change | Two-player session with distinct objects |
Test the generated-code and generated-data boundary
If AI creates Blueprints, scripts, data tables, or configuration that can affect authority, treat the output as untrusted input until validated. Compile and load it in an isolated test environment, check that it cannot grant permissions or bypass server-side checks, and require human review for changes to privileged systems. Unreal’s general automation features can execute these checks; they do not certify generated logic as safe.

How can I test AI-generated content for unsafe material?
Define the safety boundary before writing test cases. The Unreal documentation covered here does not prescribe moderation, classification, or an AI-specific safety framework. The right controls depend on whether generation occurs offline during development, at runtime, or in response to player input; whether users can submit prompts or assets; which categories are disallowed; and where enforcement and review occur.
Choose the generation model
- Offline generation: content is produced before release or before a build. Review and scan the generated artifact during the asset-ingestion pipeline, then test the packaged result.
- Runtime generation without user input: test the service or model outputs your game can receive, including timeouts, empty responses, malformed payloads, and fallback behavior.
- User-prompted generation: test both the prompt path and the returned content. Include attempts to bypass rules, indirect instructions, repeated submissions, and reports from players.
- User-uploaded assets or text: define file, size, format, and content rules; test quarantine, rejection, replacement, and removal after publication.
Write policy cases, not vague “safe” checks
List prohibited and restricted categories in language your reviewers and engineers can apply. For each category, define the expected action: block before display, replace with a safe fallback, hold for review, limit visibility, or allow with a warning. Include borderline cases and an appeal or correction path if your product offers one.
Exercise the whole enforcement path
- Submit a controlled input representing a prohibited or restricted case.
- Verify that the generation request, output, and policy decision are logged with a correlation identifier.
- Confirm that blocked content cannot reach the game client, cache, replicated state, or player-visible storage.
- Test fallback behavior when the classifier, moderation service, or generation service is unavailable.
- Submit a false positive and verify the documented review or appeal route.
- Retest after model, prompt, policy, or moderation-rule changes.
These are product-safety test practices, not Unreal-native features. Do not claim that generic automation tests classify content or establish legal compliance; obtain the project’s policy and legal requirements before naming a prohibited category or promising a particular detection rate.

How do I organize the test pipeline?
Run fast deterministic checks on every change, then add broader content and network sweeps at a cadence that matches generation risk and build cost.
- Pre-merge: run unit tests, critical functional tests, generated-fixture load/compile checks, and security assertions for protected state.
- Build validation: load and compile the complete generated-content inventory, package the target, and run smoke gameplay on the packaged build.
- Network validation: launch the required server/client topology, execute authority and replication cases, and collect Networking Insights or Network Profiler evidence for investigated issues.
- Safety validation: run policy cases against new generated outputs, user-input paths, fallbacks, and moderation-service failure modes.
- Release decision: review crashes, unauthorized state changes, blocked-content escapes, and unresolved flaky tests separately. Do not allow a green score in one track to hide a failed gate in another.
Export command-line reports with -ReportExportPath, attach process logs and network traces, and retain the generation inputs and build identity needed to reproduce a failure.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
How should failures be triaged?
Classify the first observable failure, preserve the smallest reproducible fixture, and retest the fix in the same environment before broadening coverage.
- Crash or hang: capture the call stack, log tail, map or asset identity, generation input, and whether it reproduces in Editor, packaged, or server builds.
- Automation assertion: record the expected and actual state, test name, process, and preceding actions. Check for leaked state from an earlier test before changing game code.
- Replication mismatch: compare server authority, client observation, timestamps or sequence information available in your logs, and relevant network traces.
- Suspected exploit: preserve the exact request fixture, caller role, server decision, and final state. Do not rely on a client screenshot as proof of authorization.
- Unsafe content escape: preserve the input, output, policy version, decision, enforcement event, and visibility path. Quarantine the content while investigating according to your product policy.
After fixing a defect, keep the regression case as a fixture. A generated game changes over time; without retained inputs and outputs, a later model update can make the original failure impossible to reproduce.

What should a release report contain?
Make the report useful to someone who did not run the test. Include the Unreal Engine version, target platform, source and build identifiers, generation inputs or fixture IDs, test suite and case names, pass/fail status, process topology, logs, exported automation results, and links to network traces where applicable. For safety cases, add the policy version and enforcement outcome. Mark tests that were intentionally skipped and explain why; an omitted topology or content class is a coverage limitation, not a pass.
Epic’s documented features provide the execution and inspection pieces: automation reports, multi-session testing, network analysis, and Gauntlet session management. The coverage model, threat assertions, and safety policy remain responsibilities of the project team.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same automation suite for an Editor build and a packaged game?
You can share test intent and fixtures, but keep execution environments distinct. Editor-only dependencies, cooking, packaging, startup, and runtime loading can change the result, so record which target passed and gate release on the packaged target where that is the shipped environment.
What should I do when an AI-generated asset changes between two runs?
Promote the first failing output to a retained fixture and test that fixture separately from live generation. Compare the generation inputs and configuration before deciding whether the change is a fix, a model variation, or a new regression.
How do I test moderation when the generation service is offline?
Use recorded inputs and outputs to exercise the policy and enforcement layers without calling the live service. Add explicit cases for timeout, empty, malformed, and unavailable responses so the game’s fallback cannot silently display unreviewed material.
Does a network trace prove that a multiplayer exploit is fixed?
No. A trace can show what traffic occurred and help identify unexpected RPCs or properties, but the security claim must come from an authorization assertion and a verified final server state for the abuse case.
Why did a functional replication test pass for one client but fail in a real session?
A single functional test may not represent process timing, joins, reconnects, or server/client separation. Use coordinated multi-process execution, collect each process’s logs, and test the replicated state under the topology your game actually ships.
