There is no universal way to move a game save. The right method depends on the specific game and both devices: it may sync through a platform account, require the publisher’s own account, or use a console’s transfer tool. Check the game’s official instructions, sync the old device, and keep its save intact until you have confirmed the expected progress on the new one.
Before you transfer, check how the game stores progress
Installing a game on a new device or signing in to the device’s usual account does not guarantee that its save will follow. Support is determined by the individual game, and a route that works between two devices on the same platform may not work between Android and iPhone, or between a console and a PC.
- Identify both devices and the exact game. Note whether the old device still works, and distinguish a same-platform move from a cross-platform one.
- Read the game’s official support instructions. Look for whether progress is tied to a platform account, a publisher account, a cloud-save service, or a local transfer feature. Check the rules for your exact platform pair.
- Sync or initiate the transfer on the old device. Sign into the intended account, connect to the internet, open the game, and use any explicit save, sync, link, or transfer option. Wait for a success indication if the game provides one.
- Set up the destination with the same account or the publisher’s cross-platform steps. Avoid creating a separate account or starting a new save unless the game’s instructions require it.
- Verify progress before continuing to play. Check for the expected save, level, or other known progress. If a prompt asks which save to keep, stop and compare timestamps and progress rather than guessing.
Keep the old device and its save unchanged until the destination is verified. Treat overwrite and irreversible-transfer warnings as a reason to pause. If the save is missing, recheck the account and the game’s specific sync rules; contact the game developer through official support if the platform service does not control the in-game account or data.
Common transfer routes by platform
Android with Google Play Games
For supported games, progress may autosave when you are signed in to Google Play Games. On the new Android phone or tablet, use the account used on the old device. To check whether a game uses Google Play Games, look for the relevant indicator on its Play Store listing; you can also check the account shown in the game’s Achievements or Leaderboards area. Google cautions that not all games automatically save progress, and says the game developer handles in-app data and game accounts when these steps do not restore it. iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other Apple devices
Supported games can use iCloud and Game Center to keep progress, high scores, and saves up to date across Apple devices. Check that iCloud and Game Center use the same Apple Account on both devices, and that each device meets the game’s software requirements. This depends on the game’s support: an iPhone backup or Game Center does not guarantee that every game save will transfer. Nintendo Switch
If both consoles are available, Nintendo offers a nearby save transfer at System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data. Nintendo says this feature does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Both consoles need internet access, must be near each other, and the user profiles must be linked to the same Nintendo Account. If the target already has matching save data, Nintendo presents an overwrite choice and warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. Confirm which copy you want before accepting. If the old console is unavailable, recovery depends on whether the game’s save was backed up through Nintendo’s Cloud Save Data feature and whether the membership remains active. Steam on PC or Steam Deck
Steam Cloud support is game-specific: developers choose which files a game syncs. Check the game’s Steam store page for the Steam Cloud indicator, enable cloud sync for the game and globally if needed, and wait for synchronization before opening it on the new machine. Offline play can delay syncing. If Steam shows a conflict, compare the local and cloud timestamps with when each device was last used; choosing the wrong copy can replace newer progress. Many games do not store saves in Steam Cloud. If the old PC is still available, ask the developer where local saves are stored; Steam notes that lost saves may not be recoverable. PlayStation
For the cases covered by PlayStation’s Plus cloud-storage instructions, saved data is not transferred automatically between streamed and downloaded games. Upload the save to cloud or online storage and download it on the destination device where supported. Check the game type, account, and cloud-storage availability rather than assuming the save will appear automatically. See PlayStation’s save and transfer guidance.
Cross-platform transfers depend on the game
Do not assume that a save compatible between two Android devices will work on an iPhone, or that a publisher supports every platform pair. Official instructions illustrate how much the rules can vary:

- Sonic Forces: SEGA describes Google Play Games or Game Center syncing for devices on the same platform. Its separate device-linking transfer is permanent and irreversible. SEGA warns against sharing account IDs or link codes and says to transfer only to a device you own. Read SEGA’s transfer instructions.
- Konami titles covered by its instructions: Moving data between operating systems such as iOS and Android requires a KONAMI ID; the Game Center and Google Play account route is described separately. See Konami’s new-device instructions.
- Square Enix CLOUD SYNC: The cited feature supports transfers between Android devices or between iPhones. Android and iOS save data are incompatible through this feature, and other platforms are outside its scope. See Square Enix’s CLOUD SYNC guidance.
- HoYoverse games: Its support page lists cross-save for Genshin Impact on PC, iOS, Android, PlayStation, and Xbox; Honkai: Star Rail on PC, iOS, Android, and PlayStation; and Honkai Impact 3rd between PC and mobile. The page says the PlayStation version of Honkai Impact 3rd uses separate servers and does not cross-save with PC or mobile. Check the game’s current instructions because platform support and account-linking rules can change. See HoYoverse’s platform-sync guidance.
What to do if your progress does not appear
- Confirm that the destination is signed into the same platform or publisher account used for the save, not simply the same email address.
- Open the game on the old device while online and check whether it shows a successful sync, backup, or link.
- Verify that the game supports the destination platform and, if relevant, the specific cross-platform combination.
- Check whether the destination has a competing save or whether a cloud conflict is waiting for a choice. Compare timestamps and known progress before selecting a copy.
- Contact the game developer through its official support channel if the platform account or cloud service does not restore the in-game data. Share account identifiers only through official support, never publicly; do not share link codes.
A device backup, cable, USB drive, or generic recovery utility is not a universal game-save solution. Game installation files are also separate from save data: moving a game’s files, including through Steam’s local network game transfer, does not itself transfer progress.
