If Switch 2 is still in initial setup and you have both consoles, use local system transfer; if setup is complete, use Nintendo’s nearby-console save-data transfer. In either case, verify the world opens on Switch 2 before you reset, trade in, or otherwise give up the old console. Nintendo’s published guidance does not establish whether the current Minecraft Switch save qualifies for every system-transfer or cloud-save route, so check the on-console eligibility information before proceeding.
Choose the transfer route that fits your setup
| Your situation | Route | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
| You have both consoles, and Switch 2 has not completed initial setup | Nintendo Switch-to-Switch 2 system transfer by local communication | Nintendo says unsupported save data is deleted from the source after local transfer. Minecraft’s eligibility is not established in the cited guidance. Nintendo’s system-transfer guidance |
| You have both consoles, but Switch 2 setup is already complete | Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer for individual save data | The moved save is removed from the source. Both consoles must be online and nearby, and use the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s nearby-console instructions |
| The old Switch will not be available when you set up Switch 2 | Nintendo’s server-based system transfer during initial setup | Nintendo initializes the source console after upload, deleting its data. The upload is available only until the displayed Download Deadline, for up to one year. Nintendo’s system-transfer guidance |
Nintendo recommends local system transfer when both consoles are available. The server route is a console-transfer option, not a separate Minecraft-world backup.

Before you start: check Minecraft save eligibility
Nintendo’s system-transfer rules distinguish save data supported by Save Data Cloud Backup from unsupported save data. Its guidance says the local transfer copies eligible saves and deletes unsupported save data from the source after transfer. The official guidance cited here does not say whether the current Minecraft for Nintendo Switch world save meets that eligibility rule. Do not assume that a full system transfer or a Nintendo Switch Online cloud restore will preserve your world without checking the current game-specific save-data information on the console.
- Make sure you can use the Nintendo Account linked to the source user. For the nearby-console individual save transfer, the corresponding users on both consoles must use the same Nintendo Account.
- Confirm both consoles can connect to the internet. For local routes, keep them close together.
- Keep the old Switch until you have launched Minecraft on Switch 2 and confirmed the intended world opens there. This is a precaution: Nintendo’s transfer instructions warn that data may be deleted from the source.
If Switch 2 is still in initial setup: use local system transfer
- On the new Switch 2, begin the system-transfer process during initial console setup and follow the on-screen prompts. Nintendo documents this as part of initial setup; do not complete setup expecting to start this same flow later.
- Choose local communication if the old Switch is available. Keep both consoles nearby and connected to the internet while you follow the prompts.
- Use the same Nintendo Account linked to the source user on the target system. Before committing, review which save data the transfer identifies as eligible, including the current Minecraft save-data eligibility information shown by Nintendo.
- After transfer, open Minecraft on Switch 2 with the appropriate user and check that the world appears and opens. Only then decide whether to reset, trade in, or stop using the old Switch.
Nintendo’s general rules do not establish whether a current Minecraft world is included as an eligible save, so a completed console transfer is not, by itself, proof that the world moved.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
If Switch 2 setup is already complete: transfer the individual save nearby
- On both consoles, connect to the internet, keep the systems near each other, and make sure the corresponding users are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Open the save-data transfer option on the consoles and follow Nintendo’s on-screen instructions to send the Minecraft save from the old Switch to Switch 2. See Nintendo’s nearby-console save-data transfer instructions for the current menu flow.
- Launch Minecraft on Switch 2 and verify that the intended world opens before retiring the source console.
Nintendo says this nearby-console individual save transfer does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The transfer moves the save and removes it from the source, so retain the old console until you have checked the target.
If the old Switch will be unavailable: understand the server-transfer risk
Nintendo’s server-based system-transfer route is for transferring console data when the old console will not be available during target setup. Nintendo says the source Switch is initialized after its data is uploaded, which deletes all data from that console. The uploaded transfer remains available only until the Download Deadline shown during setup and in Nintendo Account settings, for up to one year. This is not a Minecraft-specific backup, and the cited guidance does not establish whether the Minecraft world save is eligible or how it behaves with a Switch 2 version of Minecraft. If preserving the world is the priority, do not treat this route as a confirmed Minecraft-world solution.

“Sync Old Worlds” is for a different job
Minecraft’s Switch instructions describe “Sync Old Worlds” as a way to find worlds from Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition and convert one into Bedrock. The option is at the bottom of the Bedrock worlds list; after conversion, the world appears with the other Bedrock worlds. Those instructions address a change from the legacy Switch Edition to Bedrock on Switch, not migration of a current Switch save to another console. Minecraft’s legacy Switch world-conversion instructions
Minecraft’s Bedrock support information also discusses historical Wii U-to-Switch transfer and the older Switch Edition conversion path. Those legacy procedures do not show that “Sync Old Worlds,” a Wii U sync option, or another in-game feature transfers a current world from Switch to Switch 2.
