How to Transfer Xbox One and Xbox 360 Saves to Xbox Series X/S

Xbox One saves normally move to Xbox Series X or Series S through Xbox cloud synchronization. Connect the old console to Xbox network, let the game finish saving, then sign in on the new console with the same Microsoft/Xbox account and launch the compatible game. Xbox 360 saves use the same basic idea but require a backward-compatible title and a copy of the save in Xbox cloud storage. USB drives and network transfer can move installed games; they are not substitutes for cloud save synchronization.

The short answer

There is no general save-file export that you need to perform for Xbox One or supported Xbox 360 games. Saves are associated with your Xbox account and, when the title supports the relevant console relationship, roam through Xbox network cloud storage. On the Series X|S, install or insert the compatible game, sign in to the identical account, and allow the Xbox 360 or Xbox One save to synchronize when the game starts.

Do not erase, sell, or reset the old console until you have opened the game on the Series X|S and confirmed the expected profile, checkpoint, world, or career. If the save is absent, the usual causes are an unsynchronized local save, a different account, an unsupported title, a separate Series X|S edition with a different save relationship, or a failed network synchronization.

Xbox describes the supported behavior this way: “game saves can transfer to other XBOX One or XBOX Series X|S consoles through the cloud.”

Xbox, Xbox Backward Compatible Games

What you need before transferring

  • The old console must be able to connect to Xbox network so its latest local save can upload.
  • The new console must use the same Microsoft/Xbox account that created the save. A different profile will not see that account’s cloud data.
  • The game must support the console relationship you are trying to use. Xbox One and Series X|S saves generally roam between those platforms, while Xbox 360 saves require a title included in Xbox backward compatibility.
  • Keep the old console powered and available until the new console has been checked.
  • For a disc game, the disc is needed to start the title on a Series X. Series S is digital-only and cannot accept Xbox One or Xbox 360 game discs.

System-software labels and menu wording can change. Microsoft’s current Move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S guide is the reference for any transfer-menu names that differ on your console.

Transfer an Xbox One save to Series X|S

1. Finish playing on the Xbox One

Start the game on the old Xbox One, reach the point at which you want to continue later, and use the game’s normal save command if it has one. Give the title time to complete its save operation before quitting. If the game displays a saving indicator, wait for it to disappear. A save that exists only on the console’s local storage cannot appear on the Series X|S until Xbox network has received it.

2. Leave the old console connected

Keep the Xbox One connected to Xbox network after the final save. Avoid switching accounts or immediately powering it off while a synchronization operation is still in progress. There is no universal on-screen percentage for every game, so the safest practical test is to wait briefly, then start the game again and confirm that the latest checkpoint or profile is still present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Sign in on the Series X|S

Use the exact Microsoft/Xbox account used on the Xbox One. Check the account identity before launching the game, particularly on a shared console with several profiles. Cloud saves are account-specific; signing in with a family member’s or guest profile can make a perfectly good save look missing.

4. Install or insert the compatible game

Install the Xbox One version you own, or insert its disc when using a Series X. Series S has no disc drive, so its games must be obtained digitally. If the title has a supported Series X|S edition, install that edition only after checking how the publisher handles the save relationship; copying an installation does not by itself convert a save into a separate optimized edition.

5. Launch and accept synchronization

Open the game while connected to Xbox network. The console may show a cloud-save synchronization prompt or perform the operation automatically. Choose the cloud copy when the prompt identifies it as the newer or desired version. Wait at the title screen until the profile, world, campaign, or other expected data is visible.

6. Verify before touching the old console

Load the relevant checkpoint or profile and confirm meaningful details, such as the latest mission, inventory, created character, or career season. Only after that check should you reset, trade in, or wipe the Xbox One.

Transfer an Xbox 360 save to Series X|S

Confirm that the game is backward compatible

Xbox 360 compatibility is title-specific. Series X|S supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, not every game released for those systems. Check the Xbox backward-compatibility list for the exact title before spending time troubleshooting a save. Compatibility can also affect features and online behavior, so a game that launches is not proof that every original feature is available.

Put the 360 save in Xbox cloud storage

An Xbox 360 save stored only on the console’s internal hard drive or a memory unit is not automatically available to the Series X|S. The save must have an Xbox-cloud copy. On the Xbox 360, connect to Xbox network, sign in with the account that owns the save, and use the console’s save-storage controls to move or copy the title’s save into cloud storage when the game and account support that option. Keep the 360 online long enough for the operation to finish.

The cloud requirement is the important distinction: the Series X|S can retrieve a supported 360 save from Xbox cloud storage, but it cannot read an old memory unit as though it were attached to the new console.

Launch the backward-compatible version

On Series X|S, sign in with the same account and start the backward-compatible edition of the game. The Xbox 360 environment should look for the cloud save and synchronize it. Follow any prompt that asks whether to use the cloud data, then load the profile or checkpoint to confirm that it is the expected one.

If the game has multiple editions

A backward-compatible Xbox 360 version and a separately published Series X|S edition may not share saves in the same way. The supported relationship is defined by the title, not by the fact that both versions are installed on the same console. If the 360 save appears in the backward-compatible edition but not in a distinct optimized edition, that may be a product-specific limitation rather than a failed transfer.

Cloud sync, network transfer, and USB: what each method does

Method Primary purpose What it requires What it does not guarantee
Xbox cloud save synchronization Moves saved progress between supported Xbox One and Series X|S relationships, and retrieves supported Xbox 360 saves Same account, Xbox network access, a cloud copy of the save, and title compatibility Conversion between unrelated or separately published editions
Network transfer Copies installed games and apps between nearby Xbox consoles Both consoles on the same network and enough storage on the destination That a save will be converted or synchronized if the title relationship is unsupported
USB external storage Stores installations and compatible games so they can be moved without downloading them again Xbox-compatible external storage; Series X|S storage rules apply A standalone backup or restore of saved progress

Xbox Wire’s 2020 storage primer explains that Xbox One, backward-compatible Xbox 360, and original Xbox games can be played directly from an external hard drive. That makes an Xbox external hard drive useful when downloads are slow or bandwidth is limited, but the drive is not the mechanism that carries your progress. Cloud synchronization remains responsible for saves.

Using network transfer without confusing it with save migration

Network transfer can reduce setup time when the Xbox One and Series X|S are in the same home. It copies installed game and app data over the local network, avoiding a second download. Start the transfer from the console’s storage or network-transfer controls, select the games and apps, and allow the copy to complete.

After the installation arrives, launch the title while signed in to the account that owns the save. The game still needs its supported cloud-save relationship. A successful game copy therefore solves an installation problem, not an account or compatibility problem. If the title is not backward compatible, network transfer cannot make it playable or make its save readable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a USB external hard drive

An external drive is optional. It is most useful for large installations, slow internet connections, or keeping backward-compatible games ready to play. Connect an Xbox-compatible USB drive, move or copy the installed games through the console’s storage controls, then attach the drive to the Series X|S and allow the console to recognize the library.

Do not treat the drive as a save-backup device. Moving a game folder does not export the Xbox One or Xbox 360 save into a portable file, and it does not create compatibility between a backward-compatible edition and a separate Series X|S edition. The save still has to be present in Xbox cloud storage and associated with the signed-in account.

A safer migration order for several games

If you are moving a large library, handle saves before installations. Make a list of the games whose progress matters, open each one on the old console, and confirm its latest checkpoint or profile. Let every title finish saving while the console is online. This avoids assuming that a game you have not opened recently has already uploaded its newest local data.

Next, sign in on the Series X|S and test one important game from each category: an Xbox One title, a backward-compatible Xbox 360 title, and any title with a separate Series X|S edition. This small sample reveals account, network, and edition problems before you reset the old console. Once those tests succeed, install the rest by download, network transfer, or USB storage according to your bandwidth and available space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a game offers both a local and cloud copy, read the timestamps or version information shown by the console and select the copy containing the latest confirmed progress. Choosing an older local copy can overwrite the newer cloud state, so do not dismiss a synchronization prompt without checking which version it identifies.

Physical discs, digital licenses, and the Series S

A disc supplies access to a game; it is not a container for the save. On Series X, insert the compatible Xbox One or Xbox 360 disc and allow the console to install or recognize the game, then sign in to the account holding the cloud save. On Series S, there is no disc drive, so a disc-only copy cannot be used directly; you need a digital entitlement or another supported digital way to launch the title.

Digital ownership does not remove the account requirement. The Series X|S still has to be signed in to the same Microsoft/Xbox account associated with the save. If another account owns the game or created the progress, the title may launch while the expected save remains invisible.

Why a save is missing on the new Xbox

The old console never uploaded the latest local save

If the Xbox One was offline, or if you shut it down while the game was still saving, the newest progress may exist only locally. Reconnect the old console to Xbox network, open the game, confirm the desired checkpoint, and leave it online long enough to synchronize. Then close and relaunch the game on Series X|S.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The accounts do not match

Compare the account currently displayed on both consoles. The email address or gamertag must identify the same Microsoft/Xbox account. Switching to the correct profile and restarting the title is often enough to reveal the cloud save.

The title is not supported

Xbox backward compatibility is selective. An Xbox 360 or original Xbox game that is absent from the supported list cannot be made compatible by installing it from USB or copying it over the network. For Xbox One games, check that the title is supported on Series X|S and that you did not install an unrelated edition.

You launched a different edition

Some games expose an Xbox One or backward-compatible version alongside a separately published Series X|S version. Their save relationship is determined by the game’s implementation. Test the edition that created the save first; if it works there, the issue is likely an edition limitation rather than lost cloud data.

Synchronization failed or is incomplete

Leave both consoles online, close the game fully on the Series X|S, and launch it again so the cloud check runs from a clean start. Avoid choosing a local, older save when the prompt offers the cloud copy. If the service cannot complete synchronization, there is no single universal fix for every title; record the account, edition, and exact error message before contacting Xbox support or the game publisher.

Checks before you reset or sell the old console

  1. On the old console, open every game whose progress matters and confirm the intended save or profile is loaded.
  2. Connect to Xbox network and allow the game to finish saving and synchronizing.
  3. On Series X|S, sign in with the identical account and launch the compatible edition.
  4. Accept the cloud synchronization prompt when it appears.
  5. Load a meaningful checkpoint, world, character, or career and compare it with the old console.
  6. Only after all important saves are verified should you remove the old console’s account, reset it, or hand it to another person.

Key limitations to remember

  • Xbox One and Series X|S save roaming depends on the title supporting that platform relationship.
  • Xbox 360 saves require both backward-compatible support and an Xbox-cloud copy; a local hard-drive or memory-unit save alone is insufficient.
  • Series S is digital-only, so physical Xbox One and Xbox 360 discs cannot be inserted.
  • USB storage and network transfer move installations and apps, not independent save backups.
  • System menus can change with console software, so use Microsoft’s current transfer guide when a label differs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer Xbox One saves with a USB stick?

Not as a standalone save-file process. USB storage can move installed games and apps, while supported progress moves through Xbox cloud synchronization under the same account.

Can I move an Xbox 360 save directly from a memory unit?

No. The Series X|S needs the save in Xbox cloud storage and the game must be backward compatible. A memory-unit copy by itself is not readable by the new console.

Do both consoles need to be online at the same time?

The old console needs Xbox network access to upload a current save, and the Series X|S needs access to retrieve it. Keeping the old console online until verification is the safest sequence.

Will every Xbox 360 game work on Series X|S?

No. Backward compatibility is selective and title-specific. Check the supported list for the exact game before trying to migrate its save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my game start without my progress?

Check the signed-in account, confirm that the old console uploaded the latest save, verify title compatibility, and make sure you launched the edition that created the save. A synchronization failure can also prevent the cloud copy from appearing.

Can a Series S read my Xbox One or Xbox 360 disc?

No. Series S is digital-only. You need a supported digital version or entitlement to launch the game and retrieve its cloud save.

Does network transfer convert an Xbox One game into its Series X|S version?

No. It copies installed data. Whether saves work between an Xbox One or backward-compatible edition and a separate Series X|S edition depends on that title’s supported save relationship.

Should I reset my old Xbox after the first game appears?

Wait until every important game has been tested. Verify a meaningful checkpoint, profile, world, or career on the Series X|S before removing the old console’s account or resetting it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to move an Xbox One save to Series X?

Connect the Xbox One to Xbox network, finish and confirm the latest save, then sign in on Series X with the same account and launch the compatible game. Cloud synchronization should retrieve the progress.

Can an external hard drive back up Xbox saves?

An external drive moves installed games and apps, not independent save files. Supported saves continue to rely on Xbox cloud synchronization.

Why is my Xbox 360 save missing?

The game may not be backward compatible, the save may still be only on the 360’s local storage, or the Series X|S may use a different account or edition. Put the save in Xbox cloud storage and test the backward-compatible version.

Can I use a disc on Xbox Series S?

No. Series S has no disc drive, so physical Xbox One and Xbox 360 discs cannot be inserted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For Xbox One saves, let the old console synchronize, then launch the game on Series X|S with the same account. For Xbox 360 saves, confirm backward compatibility and move the save into Xbox cloud storage first. Network transfer and an Xbox external hard drive can shorten installation time, but neither replaces cloud save synchronization. Verify every important checkpoint before resetting the old console.
