If a PS5 system-software update is stuck or fails, retry it once from Downloads/Uploads. If it fails again, change the recovery path: use Safe Mode when the Home screen is unavailable, or install the official update file from a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. A wired network can remove Wi-Fi instability. Reinstallation is the final option because it erases every item on the console, so back up first and use PlayStation Repairs if recovery still fails.

- Open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system-software update.
- Choose View Error Info to record the code and message.
- Select Try Again.
Allow the retry to complete without repeatedly canceling and restarting it. Sony’s update guidance says that repeated failed downloads should move to the PC/Mac USB method rather than continuing the same download loop.
What if the PS5 cannot reach the Home screen?
Use Safe Mode when the normal interface is unavailable or the update process will not proceed from the Home screen. Safe Mode loads a limited recovery menu so the console can update without starting the standard system interface.
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off.
- Press and hold the console’s power button.
- Release the button after you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- On the Safe Mode menu, select Update System Software.
Follow the on-screen update instructions. If the update still fails in Safe Mode, switch to the USB procedure instead of repeating the same online attempt.
How do I update a PS5 from a USB drive?
The USB method downloads the official update package on a PC or Mac and transfers it to the console without relying on the PS5’s own download session. Sony requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, exact folder names, and an exact filename.
USB requirements
- A USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT.
- Approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the regular update file, as specified in Sony’s PS5 system-software guide.
- A PC or Mac to download the official update file.
- The PS5 update file saved as
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Folders named exactly
PS5and, inside it,UPDATE; both names must use uppercase letters. - A controller and USB cable for entering and navigating Safe Mode.
Create the folder structure
- On the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 system-software update file from Sony’s PlayStation support site.
- Save the file inside the
UPDATEfolder and name it exactlyPS5UPDATE.PUP.
Do not use a different extension, add spaces, or change the capitalization. The console may fail to recognize a correctly downloaded file if the folder path or filename differs from these requirements.
Install the file in Safe Mode
- Insert the prepared USB drive into the PS5.
- Turn the console off.
- Hold the power button and release it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable.
- Select Update System Software.
- Choose Update from USB Storage Device.
- Select OK and allow the installation to finish.
Use only Sony’s official update file. A file from an unofficial source can be incomplete, altered, or intended for a different recovery operation.

How can I fix network-related PS5 update failures?
When the console reports a network problem, restart both ends of the connection and remove Wi-Fi instability where possible. Sony’s guidance for error WS-116522-7 specifies a wait of at least five minutes after turning off the router and modem before turning them back on.
- Turn off the PS5.
- Turn off the router and modem.
- Leave both network devices off for at least five minutes.
- Turn the modem and router back on and wait for the connection to return.
- Restart the PS5 and retry the update.
If the console is using Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with a wired LAN cable when practical. A wired connection removes the wireless link from the update path. If a cable is not available, move the PS5 closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them before retrying.
Do not treat every failed download as a network fault. A repeated failure with the same update file can indicate that changing to Safe Mode or USB is more appropriate than performing more router restarts.
What do common PS5 update error codes mean?
Read the code displayed on the console and use it to choose the relevant Sony procedure. The codes below identify different failure categories.

In practice, retry once, change to Safe Mode or USB after repeated failures, and reserve reinstallation for a console that cannot recover through the update paths.
Why is my PS5 not recognizing the USB update file?
Recognition failures are usually caused by the drive format, folder path, filename, or an incorrect download. Check each item rather than downloading the same file repeatedly.

- Confirm the top-level folder is
PS5in uppercase. - Confirm the nested folder is
UPDATEin uppercase. - Confirm the file is inside
PS5/UPDATE, not in the drive’s top level or another folder. - Confirm the filename is exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUP, including capitalization and the.PUPextension. - Confirm the download came from Sony’s official PlayStation support page.
- Confirm the drive has approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the regular update file.
After correcting a detail, insert the drive again, start Safe Mode, and use Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK. If the console still cannot read the file, try another correctly formatted USB drive before considering reinstallation or repair.

Reinstallation is a last resort, not a stronger version of the ordinary update. It deletes all data on the PS5 and functions as a factory reset.

Protect your data first
- Back up saved data and other important content whenever the console remains usable.
- Make sure you understand that reinstallation removes the console’s stored data before selecting the reinstall option.
- Use the official reinstall file and the USB folder structure specified by Sony, not the regular update file by mistake.
If Safe Mode cannot complete an update or reinstall, stop repeating the operation and contact PlayStation Repairs. Persistent failure after the official recovery routes can indicate a hardware or storage problem that software steps cannot resolve.

How should I use a wired connection during recovery?
A LAN cable is most useful when the PS5 can reach the update process but Wi-Fi is slow or unstable. Connect the console directly to the router, restart the PS5, and retry the update after the network is back online.
Use the wired route for the online retry or Safe Mode update. It does not replace the USB method when the download itself repeatedly fails; USB changes the connection path entirely by supplying the update package from local storage.
What should I do after every recovery method fails?
Check that you followed the exact Safe Mode and USB instructions, preserved the error code, and did not skip the five-minute network restart interval for a network-related failure. If the Home-screen retry, Safe Mode update, correctly prepared USB update, and—when necessary—reinstallation all fail, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs.
