If Minecraft Dungeons II will not let you join a friend, start with the checks that separate account, save-file, version, subscription and network problems: update every copy to the same build, sign in to the intended Microsoft and platform accounts, select an explicitly online hero, then recreate the lobby and use a fresh invitation or party code. Console multiplayer subscriptions and family-account permissions can block online play before a router is involved. The game supports up to four players in couch, online and mixed co-op with cross-play on Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Mojang released version 1.1.2.0 on October 7, 2026 to address online-related crashes, so older troubleshooting advice may no longer apply.
What does Minecraft Dungeons II support?
Mojang’s September 29, 2026 release supports parties of up to four players. You can play entirely on one system, entirely online, or combine local and online players in a mixed session. Cross-play is listed for Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

The platform list and four-player modes are confirmed by Mojang’s game information. Details such as the exact party-code length and some save-file behaviors come from current player reports, so treat those as practical tests rather than guaranteed rules.
What should I check first when co-op will not connect?
Do these checks in order. They are designed to identify the cause without changing router settings or deleting saves.

- Check the build on every system. Open the game’s update screen on each platform and install every available patch. Everyone should be on the same current version; version 1.1.2.0 was the current Mojang hotfix on October 7, 2026.
- Fully quit and relaunch. Do not rely on a suspended or quick-resume copy. Close the game, wait for the platform to finish ending the process, then launch it again.
- Confirm both account layers. Each player should be signed in to the intended Microsoft account and to the platform account that owns the game or its entitlement.
- Test with an online hero. Select or create a hero explicitly marked for online play. Current players report that an offline hero cannot join an online session.
- Recreate the party. End the old lobby, start a new online session and send a fresh invitation. For cross-play, have the joiner enter the new eight-character party code if the invitation does not arrive.
- Check permissions and subscriptions. Verify console online multiplayer access, child-account permissions, the purchasing account or Game Pass entitlement, and the guardian relationship.
- Only then investigate services and network settings. Check whether the host is online and whether the game or platform is reporting an outage before changing DNS, ports or router rules.
If local-only co-op works but an online party does not, the game installation and controllers are probably functional; focus on accounts, hero type, entitlement and network access.
How do I make sure everyone has the same game version?
Version mismatches can prevent invitations, produce apparently empty lobbies or cause a join attempt to fail without a useful message. Update every participant, not just the host.

- Exit Minecraft Dungeons II completely.
- Open the launcher or Steam library and check for a pending download. If an update is queued, let it finish before launching.
- Ask every player to report the version shown on the title or settings screen. A matching number is more useful than assuming an automatic update completed.
Consoles
- Highlight the game in the console library and use the platform’s check-for-update command.
- Install the update, then restart the game rather than resuming it from standby.
- Repeat the check on every console in the party, including a second console using the same household network.
Mojang’s version 1.1.2.0 hotfix addressed several client and server crashes, including a crash when exiting an online game, and said more fixes were in progress. Recheck the current changelog whenever an older workaround stops matching what you see.
Why does Minecraft Dungeons II say I am offline?
An offline message can describe either a temporary sign-in failure or a deliberate offline hero. First restore both account connections; then verify the hero selection.

Refresh Microsoft and platform sign-in
- From the platform account menu, confirm the intended account is active.
- Open Minecraft Dungeons II and verify that it shows the same Microsoft account you expect to use with friends.
- Sign out only if the displayed account is wrong or the game is stuck. Sign back in with the licensed account, then fully quit and relaunch.
- Have every party member perform the same check before sending a new invite.
Mojang’s launch update stated: “We’ve resolved most login and account linking issues on the backend, so if you are having trouble, please try again!” That makes a clean relaunch and account check a sensible first response rather than repeated router resets.
Select an online hero
Current player reports describe separate online and offline heroes. From the main menu, choose a hero explicitly labeled for online play or create a new online hero for testing. If that test hero joins successfully, the original save’s mode is the likely blocker; do not assume an existing offline save can be converted, because Mojang has not published a universal conversion procedure.

How do I join friends across Xbox, PC, PlayStation and Switch?
Cross-play is an official feature on the supported platforms, but the party must be created after accounts are online and the game versions match. A fresh lobby is more reliable than reusing an invitation generated before an update or sign-in refresh.
- The host selects an online hero and starts a new online session.
- Use the in-game invite control if the friend appears online.
- If the invite is missing or does not open, display the new party code. Current reports describe an eight-character code for cross-platform joining.
- The joining player opens the game’s join-party option and enters the code exactly, or accepts the fresh invitation.
- Once the player appears in the lobby, the host should wait for the roster to finish synchronizing before launching a mission.
Do not use a code copied from an earlier lobby. Recreate the session after every version change, account relink or failed join attempt. Because the code workflow is reported by players rather than fully documented in Mojang’s public materials, use it as a diagnostic path, not proof that every invitation failure has the same cause.

Can a subscription or family account block online co-op?
Yes. Online console multiplayer requires the relevant platform’s online subscription. A child or family account can also be blocked by privacy settings even when the game launches normally.
- Confirm that each console player has the platform’s current online-multiplayer entitlement.
- Check which account owns the game or Game Pass access. Sharing an entitlement with the wrong profile can allow installation but deny online authorization.
- Review multiplayer, cross-network play, communication and friend permissions for child accounts.
- Verify that the guardian account is correctly linked and that the child account is in the intended family group.
- After changing a permission, sign out and relaunch the game so the new token is loaded.
Test the same accounts in a local-only session. If local play succeeds while online play remains unavailable, the subscription or permission path is more likely than a controller or installation fault.

Error 0020 needs separate treatment because Mojang has an open issue report involving a primary account starting online couch co-op while family members join. The report focuses on the guardian account, license or Game Pass sharing and child-account restrictions, and it has been reopened; there is no universal confirmed fix.
Run a controlled account test
- Record which profile owns the game or entitlement and which profile is the guardian.
- Have the licensed or authorized profile start the online couch session.
- Try joining with the affected family member, then reverse the roles if the platform permits it.
- Note whether the error appears only when a child account joins, only when the primary account hosts, or in every arrangement.
Launching from the affected family member’s licensed or authorized profile can be a useful diagnostic experiment, but it is not a guaranteed workaround and should not be treated as a licensing change. Avoid repeatedly removing family members or purchasing another copy until the ownership and permission relationship is clear.

Could the service or home network be the problem?
Yes, but check account and version conditions first. Mojang’s multiplayer guidance recommends confirming that the host is online, versions match, permissions and subscriptions are valid, and custom DNS or port settings are not interfering.
Service and host checks
- Ask the host to open another online feature or check the platform’s service-status page.
- Have a second player try hosting. If everyone can join one host but not another, the issue is probably tied to that host’s account, network or platform.
- Try a local-only session to distinguish online service problems from installation problems.
Network checks that are worth trying
- Restart the modem/router and the affected system, then test again with a newly created lobby.
- Temporarily remove custom DNS entries and unusual port-forwarding rules, returning to the provider’s automatic settings.
- On a console, test a different network such as a phone hotspot only long enough to identify whether the home connection is involved; data charges and carrier restrictions may apply.
- Use a wired connection where practical, especially for the host, and stop large downloads or streams during the test.
Do not open ports blindly. A failed cross-play join with an offline hero or an unauthorized family account will not be repaired by router changes.

What should I record before contacting support?
Support can act faster when the report describes one reproducible scenario instead of a general statement that co-op is broken. Capture the following for every affected player:
- Platform and exact game version.
- Whether the hero is explicitly online or offline.
- Microsoft account and platform-account arrangement, without sharing passwords or security codes.
- Game ownership or Game Pass entitlement and the console multiplayer subscription.
- Whether the account is a child or family profile and which account is the guardian.
- Exact error text or number, including Error 0020 if shown.
- Whether couch-only co-op works, whether another player can host, and whether a fresh party code changes the result.
- The time of the attempt and whether a service-status warning was visible.
Use Minecraft Help or Mojang’s official bug-report route. Include the sequence that reproduces the failure, the platform for each participant and the result of the account-role test. Mojang’s October 2026 hotfix announcement directs players to its feedback and bug-report links, and active launch-period fixes mean a new report may be more useful than an older workaround copied from an earlier version.

When should I stop troubleshooting and wait for a fix?
Stop changing settings when the same Error 0020 pattern reproduces across authorized accounts, current builds and different hosts, or when every player fails during a confirmed service incident. At that point, preserve your notes and report the issue rather than repeatedly reinstalling or altering family ownership.
For ordinary join failures, the practical order remains: same build, clean sign-in, online hero, fresh lobby or party code, subscription and family permissions, then service and network checks. This order limits destructive changes and identifies the account combinations Mojang needs to investigate.
