Use this order before changing hardware
Work through the checks in sequence and retest after each change. This gives you a usable result for support rather than a list of unrelated tweaks.

DirectX 11 and a driver update are tests, not guaranteed cures. Team17 has identified configuration-specific rendering failures, so the result of each test matters.

Install the latest hotfix before troubleshooting
Launch the current Silver Pines build through Steam and allow every available update to finish. Hotfix 1 added a DirectX 11 option to the launcher and addressed additional softlock scenarios. Hotfix 2 fixed several progression and interaction failures, including interactable objects that could stop working after an interruption, a Sheriff Department boss-fight progression bug, and multiple Riverside softlocks involving locations entered without a flashlight.

Restart Steam after the update has installed, then restart the computer before testing again. If a save was created while a softlock was active, loading an earlier save may still be necessary; the hotfix prevents the underlying failure but cannot necessarily repair a state already saved in it.
Check whether the symptom is a fixed softlock
- If objects stopped responding after an interaction was interrupted, update before attempting workarounds.
- If progression stopped during the Sheriff Department boss fight, confirm Hotfix 2 is installed and replay the encounter from a save before the fight if required.
- If a Riverside location was entered without a flashlight and progression is blocked, install Hotfix 2 and retry from an earlier save.
Try the DirectX 11 launcher option
Team17’s pinned guidance specifically asks players with performance problems, especially on Steam Deck, to launch Silver Pines in DirectX 11. Use this as the first graphics-path comparison for crashes, freezes, stutter, or a black screen.
- Start Silver Pines from Steam.
- When the launcher presents graphics choices, select DirectX 11 rather than the default path.
- Load the same save or repeat the same menu action that produced the fault.
- Note whether the game reaches the menu, how long it runs, and whether the symptom changes.
Do not describe DirectX 11 as a universal fix. Team17’s request for DxDiag reports shows that some failures depend on the particular Windows, Unity, driver, and hardware configuration. If DirectX 11 makes no difference, keep that result for your support report and continue with the other checks.

Verify Silver Pines files in Steam
Missing or corrupted content can cause launch crashes and damaged in-game behavior. Steam’s standard repair procedure is:

- Exit Silver Pines and restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click Silver Pines and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, allow Steam to reacquire any content it reports, and restart Steam before launching.
Verification does not change your graphics API, display mode, overlays, or Windows configuration. If the same failure returns, record that verification completed and move to those variables instead of repeating the scan indefinitely.
Remove display-mode and overlay variables
The Silver Pines team has reported performance degradation over time when the game is streamed or recorded. Discord streaming, OBS, and similar capture tools can therefore be part of the failure even when the game runs normally by itself.
Run a clean display test
- Close Discord streaming, OBS, and any other recording, overlay, hardware-monitoring, or capture utility.
- Launch Silver Pines without starting a broadcast or recording.
- Use Exclusive Fullscreen or Maximized Window for the test.
- Avoid Borderless Windowed while diagnosing this issue.
- Play or remain in the problem area long enough to see whether the freeze, black screen, or slowdown returns.
If the game is stable only after capture software is disabled, re-enable one program at a time to identify the trigger. Current graphics drivers may also help, but the team has not said that a driver update guarantees a fix.

For launch failures, Steam recommends a current Windows installation, updated hardware drivers, disabled non-essential software, verified files, and a restart before retesting. Apply these checks after the game update and DirectX 11 test:

- Install all pending Windows updates, then reboot.
- Install the current driver for your graphics hardware from its established update channel, then reboot again.
- Temporarily close non-essential background applications, especially overlays, capture tools, performance tuners, and utilities that inject into games.
- Launch only Steam and Silver Pines for the controlled test.
Keep a note of the driver version and Windows version. A support technician needs those details to distinguish a game regression from a system-specific rendering problem.
Black screens and freezes on Windows 11
A Team17 developer has described a known rendering problem between Unity and Windows 11 that affects some setups and does not respond to every graphics option. A recurring black screen or freeze therefore warrants a diagnostic report rather than repeated blind setting changes.
Create a DxDiag report
- Press Windows Key+R.
- Type
dxdiagand select OK. - Wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to finish gathering information.
- Select Save All Information.
- Save the text file somewhere you can find it.
- Attach that file to your Team17 support report together with the exact Silver Pines symptom and the tests you completed.
Describe whether the screen goes black before the menu, during a loading transition, or after playing for a while. Include whether audio continues, whether Windows remains responsive, and whether Alt+Tab or a restart is required. Those observations help support separate a rendering hang from a full system lockup.
Crash-on-launch troubleshooting
Use this branch when Silver Pines closes, freezes, or never presents a usable menu.

- Confirm the latest hotfix is installed and restart the computer.
- Launch with DirectX 11.
- Verify integrity of the game files through Steam’s Properties > Installed Files page.
- Close Discord, OBS, and other non-essential software.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver.
- Retry with Exclusive Fullscreen or Maximized Window if the launcher or game reaches its display settings.
- If the failure continues on Windows 11, create DxDiag and send it to Team17.
Do not infer that a crash is an account problem simply because Steam starts the game. Steam Support handles client, account, authentication, and purchase issues; a crash after Silver Pines launches belongs with the game’s developer or publisher.
When the menu or a level is stuck
Menu stuck after a Steam Deck hotfix
A current Steam discussion describes a Steam Deck main menu that remains stuck after a button is pressed following a hotfix, even after file verification. Team17 Support said similar reports had been received and passed to the team for investigation. Treat this as a potentially known issue rather than assuming your Deck is defective.
Before contacting support, record the installed hotfix version, your Steam Deck model, whether you are on the stable or another SteamOS channel, the button that was pressed, and whether the menu responds to touch, another input method, or a restart. Include the fact that file verification was attempted if it was.

In-game interaction and progression locks
Hotfix 2 specifically addressed interactables that could stop working after an interruption, the Sheriff Department boss-fight progression bug, and Riverside softlocks connected with entering without a flashlight. If one of these descriptions matches your save, update first and retry from an earlier save when necessary. Avoid presenting a generic controller reset or hardware change as a fix for a progression bug that the hotfix targets.

Controller, mouse, and input problems
Separate an input-device fault from a game-state or rendering fault with a controlled comparison.
- Quit Silver Pines completely.
- Disconnect the controller and launch with the mouse and keyboard, or disconnect the mouse and test the controller if that is your normal setup.
- Repeat the same menu or gameplay action and note whether the response changes.
- Reconnect one device at a time and test again.
- Record whether the issue appears only in a particular display mode, during streaming, or after switching to DirectX 11.
For very slow mouse response, Team17 suggested updating the software for an advanced gaming mouse or lowering its polling rate to 500 MHz, and asked whether using a controller changed the behavior. Treat that as a targeted diagnostic for advanced mouse software, not as a universal controller recommendation. Do not assume that buying a different controller, cable, or mouse will solve a Silver Pines-specific bug when the available guidance does not identify one.
What to include in an input report
- Controller or mouse model and connection type.
- Whether the device is wired, wireless, or connected through a hub.
- The exact symptom: no input, delayed input, duplicated input, stuck movement, or slow camera response.
- Whether mouse and keyboard, controller, or both are affected.
- Whether changing the mouse polling rate, switching to DirectX 11, verifying files, or disabling overlays changed the result.

A concise reproduction record is more useful than a message that only says the game is broken. Copy this structure into your report:
- Platform: Windows PC or Steam Deck, including the Deck model and SteamOS channel where relevant.
- Game version: the installed hotfix or build shown by Steam.
- System: Windows version, graphics hardware, and graphics-driver version.
- Symptom: crash, black screen, freeze, menu hang, stutter, mouse lag, or controller failure.
- Reproduction: the menu, location, boss fight, loading transition, or button sequence that triggers it.
- Graphics path: DirectX 11 or the default launch path.
- Display mode: Exclusive Fullscreen, Maximized Window, or Borderless Windowed.
- Streaming and overlays: whether Discord, OBS, or similar software was active.
- Repairs attempted: update, restart, file verification, driver update, background-software test, and input-device comparison.
- Attachments: DxDiag text for recurring Windows 11 freezes or black screens, plus screenshots or video when they show the failure clearly.
State the result of each test, including when nothing changed. For example, “DirectX 11, Exclusive Fullscreen, and verified files produced the same black screen after loading Riverside” is actionable because it narrows the variables without claiming a cause that has not been established.
