If “Spear” keeps crashing on your Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then check the game’s compatibility details and test one change at a time. The game identity is not confirmed: a matching troubleshooting article calls it “S.P.E.A.R.” but does not identify a Steam app or link to a developer or store page. The steps below are therefore general Steam Deck troubleshooting, not a confirmed game-specific fix.
First, note when the crash happens
Before changing settings, record whether the game crashes on launch, in a particular scene, after an update, or only after playing for a while. Also note the exact title and Steam app, if you can identify it. No reproducible crash condition has been established for a specific game called Spear, so these details help distinguish a title-specific issue from a broader Deck problem.

Install SteamOS updates and restart
- Install any available SteamOS updates using the Deck’s system update controls.
- Restart the Steam Deck, launch the game again, and check whether the same crash recurs.

If you installed third-party applications through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily, restart the Deck, and retry the game. This is a useful isolation test: if the crash stops, re-enable applications individually to see whether the issue returns.

Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details
Confirm that you have the right game, then check its Steam Store page or your Library for its Steam Deck compatibility details. Valve uses four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. The rating applies to the specific title, and Valve says its review process is ongoing; see Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility information.
A compatibility rating is context, not a diagnosis of your crash. Because the game identity is unresolved, do not assume a rating or fix associated with another game named Spear applies.

Try a different Proton compatibility tool
For a Steam app that has stability or performance trouble, Valve’s troubleshooting guide says you can force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool. This is a general diagnostic step, not evidence that a Proton change fixes this particular crash.

- Open Compatibility and enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select a Proton version, test the game, and record the result. If needed, try another available version, including the latest Proton version.
Change only one compatibility setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the crash. Do not treat Proton Experimental—or any other version—as a confirmed solution for this unidentified title. Valve’s steps are in its Steam Deck software troubleshooting guide.

If the game is on a microSD card, test internal storage
If the installation is on a microSD card, moving it to the Deck’s internal storage and retrying can help isolate whether the storage location is involved. A secondary troubleshooting article suggests this check but provides no test evidence that a card causes Spear crashes. Treat the result as a clue, not a diagnosis: do not replace the card unless other evidence points to a card problem.
