For a sensible starting point, update Half-Life: Alyx, turn on Foveated Rendering if your GPU and graphics backend support it, then judge the result in a real gameplay scene. If performance still struggles, check SteamVR render resolution first, lower Alyx’s overall Fidelity or independent Texture Quality as needed, and consider a lower headset refresh target if the GPU is overloaded. Valve’s October 2026 update says foveated rendering “Can increase rendering performance,” but neither Valve nor the linked PC guide gives a universal FPS gain or a best preset for every PC and headset.
What changed in the October 2026 foveated-rendering update?
Valve added a desktop-PC Foveated Rendering toggle to Half-Life: Alyx on October 26, 2026. Valve’s release notes describe the benefit conditionally: it “Can increase rendering performance.” The notes do not promise a particular frame-rate increase, and the outcome depends on whether the feature is available on your GPU and graphics backend and whether your system is actually GPU-limited.

Valve recorded fixes on October 28 for an AMD regression and visual glitches involving decals and splatters. That matters if you saw early reports about the October 26 build: the initial release was not the final state as of October 30, 2026. Keep the game updated before troubleshooting the new setting. Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx news and release notes
Do not confuse this desktop-PC option with Valve’s September 14, 2026 update for Steam Frame. That earlier release added native Steam Frame support, including standalone foveated rendering and headset-specific changes. Its native depth-reprojection work is not a feature to assume exists on every PCVR headset.

Which settings should I change first?
Start with the supported foveation toggle, then address the settings most likely to affect GPU load. Avoid jumping straight to an all-Low preset: changing resolution, Fidelity, textures, and refresh rate together makes it hard to tell which adjustment helped and what image-quality tradeoff you accepted.
- Update the game. Confirm that the October 2026 desktop update and its later fixes are installed.
- Record a baseline in gameplay. Use a repeatable scene, not just the main menu. Note your GPU, headset refresh target, SteamVR render resolution, Alyx Fidelity, Texture Quality, and whether the game is using Direct3D 11 or Vulkan.
- Enable Foveated Rendering if it is available. In Alyx, open Options/Settings > Performance > gear icon > Advanced Performance > Foveated Rendering. The toggle starts off.
- Check SteamVR resolution. Open SteamVR Settings > Video > Render Resolution and try Auto. If performance remains inadequate, test a lower render resolution.
- Adjust Alyx’s quality settings separately. Try Low Fidelity as a diagnostic, then move upward gradually. Texture Quality is independent of overall Fidelity, so evaluate it as its own setting.
- If the GPU is still overtaxed, check refresh rate. For Valve Index, Valve suggests testing 90 Hz rather than a higher refresh rate when the GPU cannot keep up.
Change one setting at a time and revisit the same gameplay scene. The goal is a stable, comfortable experience at an image quality you prefer—not a particular number copied from another PC. The settings above are Valve’s troubleshooting recommendations, not a guarantee that every change will improve every setup. Valve’s Steam Support performance guidance
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A useful comparison is to keep the test conditions fixed and ask what each change is meant to solve. Foveation changes how rendering work is distributed across the view; SteamVR render resolution changes the overall sharpness and load; Fidelity and Texture Quality are separate Alyx controls; refresh rate changes the display target. If you change all four at once, a smoother result will not tell you which adjustment created the headroom, and a softer image may be an unintended side effect rather than a necessary cost.
| Setting or check | What to compare | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Foveated Rendering | Same scene with the toggle off and on | Your GPU/backend supports it and you want to see whether rendering headroom changes. |
| SteamVR Render Resolution | Auto versus a lower setting | You need to trade some image sharpness for a lighter rendering load. |
| Alyx Fidelity and Texture Quality | Each control separately, starting with Low Fidelity as a diagnostic | You want to isolate in-game quality tradeoffs rather than apply a blanket preset. |
| Refresh target | Your current target versus Valve’s 90 Hz test for an overtaxed Index GPU | The GPU cannot sustain the current target. |
This is a decision aid, not a benchmark table: it does not imply that one setting has a fixed FPS value or that the same choice is right for every headset. Foveation is worth checking first when supported, but it is not a substitute for checking resolution and the other sources of GPU load.
Why is Foveated Rendering missing in Half-Life: Alyx?
The toggle is available only with a qualifying GPU and rendering backend. If you do not see it under Advanced Performance, check your graphics card and the game’s Direct3D/Vulkan path before looking for a separate add-on.
| GPU family in the patch-linked guide | Minimum listed generation | Backend qualification |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA | GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series or newer | Windows normally uses Direct3D 11, which supports the listed NVIDIA cards. |
| AMD | RX 6000-series or newer | Vulkan is required; on Windows, add -vulkan to the game’s Steam Launch Options and restart. |
| Intel | Arc A-series or newer | Vulkan is required; on Windows, add -vulkan to the game’s Steam Launch Options and restart. |
The compatibility details above come from the PC guide linked from Valve’s announcement. Valve’s shorter release note names NVIDIA and AMD; the linked guide provides the additional Intel Arc detail. On Linux, the game uses Vulkan by default. Availability of the feature on a listed card does not establish that Vulkan will run faster than Direct3D on your particular system; the published information addresses feature support, not a universal backend performance ranking. The patch-linked PC foveated-rendering guide
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the model and generation rather than relying on a broad brand label. “NVIDIA,” for example, is not enough to establish eligibility: the guide’s listed Windows support begins with GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series cards. Likewise, the game’s minimum GPU requirement and the feature’s compatibility threshold answer different questions. The former concerns running Alyx; the latter concerns whether this new option is supported on the specified GPU and backend.
How do I switch to Vulkan on Windows?
- In Steam Library, select Half-Life: Alyx, open Properties, and stay on the General page.
- Enter
-vulkanin Launch Options. - Restart the game, then check Options/Settings > Performance > gear icon > Advanced Performance for the foveation toggle.
This is a way to make the feature available on qualifying AMD and Intel GPUs under Windows; it is not a recommendation to switch graphics backends solely in pursuit of higher FPS. If you compare backends, use the same scene and settings, and keep the one that works better on your own setup.
If the option remains absent, check the full path again: the listed GPU generation, the required backend, the launch option if needed, and a full game restart. On Windows, Direct3D 11 is the normal path; Vulkan is the required path for the listed AMD and Intel cards. On Linux, Vulkan is already the default. Nothing in the compatibility information indicates that a separate downloadable feature pack is required.

Do I need eye tracking for Alyx foveated rendering?
No. The guide says foveated rendering can be enabled with any VR headset, provided the GPU and backend meet the compatibility requirements. Without eye tracking, the feature uses a fixed foveated region; gaze-following rendering requires eye-tracking data to reach the game through a supported headset and its SteamVR driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Owning an eye-tracking headset by itself does not prove Alyx is receiving gaze data. Driver support and the connection path matter, and the guide cautions that OpenVR compatibility layers can interfere with eye-tracking integration. If you cannot verify that the game receives eye data, treat fixed foveation as the relevant mode rather than assuming the sharper region follows your eyes.
The guide describes three rendering regions: an inner full-resolution area, a middle area with reduced shading, and an outer area. Its quarter- and sixteenth-resolution fractions describe rendering in those regions; they are not a claim of fourfold or sixteenfold higher FPS. This design reallocates rendering work across the view, but the source does not quantify a general performance gain.
That distinction also matters when comparing headset options. A headset with eye tracking is not required to use the PC toggle, and buying one is not a prerequisite for trying fixed foveation. If gaze-following rendering is important to you, confirm that the particular headset, SteamVR driver, and connection path actually deliver eye data to the game. Meta Quest Pro and Bigscreen Beyond 2e are examples of eye-tracking headsets, but availability and software-path details should be checked rather than assumed.
Should SteamVR render resolution be Auto?
Auto is a useful first setting because Valve recommends trying it when diagnosing performance. If it does not provide enough headroom, lower the render resolution and compare the image and smoothness in the same gameplay scene.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteResolution is not the only setting that determines the result. Alyx changes its effective resolution dynamically as performance headroom changes, so a lower render-resolution setting may alter sharpness while the game continues adjusting internally. There is no source-supported resolution percentage that is right for every headset, GPU, and refresh target.
In practice, treat Auto as a starting point rather than a promise that SteamVR has found your preferred balance. If you reduce resolution, look at fine detail as well as motion smoothness in the same scene. Keep the change only if the resulting tradeoff feels worthwhile. A reader seeking more clarity may prefer a higher resolution and a lower Fidelity or refresh target; another system may need resolution reduced first. The sources do not prescribe a universal numerical scale for either choice.
How should I tune Fidelity and Texture Quality?
Use Low Fidelity to diagnose whether reducing Alyx’s overall graphics load makes the experience smoother. If it does, move back upward in stages until you find an acceptable balance. Texture Quality is controlled independently from overall Fidelity; lower it separately if needed rather than assuming the Fidelity selection changes it for you.
These adjustments have different visual tradeoffs. Render resolution affects image sharpness, while Fidelity and Texture Quality control distinct in-game quality settings. Make a single adjustment, inspect the same scene, and keep it only if the change improves the experience enough to justify its visual cost.

Low Fidelity is therefore a diagnostic step, not necessarily the recommended final setting. If it changes performance, raise quality gradually until you find the limit that works for your machine. If it does not help, simply leaving everything at Low may sacrifice image quality without addressing the actual bottleneck. Texture Quality deserves its own check because it is not folded into the overall Fidelity selection.
When should I lower the refresh rate?
Consider refresh rate when the GPU cannot sustain the headset’s current target. Valve specifically suggests testing 90 Hz on an overtaxed Valve Index GPU instead of using a higher refresh rate. This is troubleshooting advice, not a benchmark result or a universal target for other headsets.
Do not interpret the 90 Hz suggestion as a required setting for every Index owner. It is a test for a GPU that is struggling at a higher target. Compare it in gameplay, alongside the other settings, and retain the higher target if your system can sustain it comfortably.
Why didn’t my FPS increase after the patch?
A flat FPS reading does not by itself show that foveated rendering failed. Alyx dynamically changes its effective resolution as performance headroom changes; if foveation frees resources, the game may spend some of that headroom on image clarity instead of producing a visibly higher frame-rate number.
Also check whether the game was GPU-limited in the first place. The available sources do not establish a universal uplift, and Valve’s “Can increase rendering performance” wording is conditional. A result on a different GPU, backend, headset, or scene is not a reliable forecast for your own setup.
Foveation is a rendering technique, not an FPS guarantee. If your bottleneck is elsewhere, enabling it may not change the number you are watching. Even when GPU headroom changes, Alyx’s dynamic resolution can make image clarity the visible result rather than a higher frame rate. A fair check is to compare the same gameplay conditions, verify the toggle is enabled, and assess both smoothness and image quality instead of relying on a menu reading.
How can I make a controlled comparison?
For a temporary comparison only, the patch-linked guide gives these Steam Launch Options to disable Alyx’s dynamic resolution:
+vr_fidelity_level_auto 0 +vr_fidelity_level 3
With dynamic resolution disabled, compare the same scene and keep the other settings constant. These options are for controlled comparison, not a permanent optimization; remove them after testing to restore the game’s normal behavior. Do not equate a frame-rate number captured under this override with a patch-wide gain or an everyday result.

Should I change the advanced foveation variables?
Not as a first step. The guide says its defaults should work for most people and describes console variables as advanced tinkering. It lists fove_level options lo, med, hi (the default), and ultra; the effective presets change when eye tracking is unavailable.
Changing these values can shift the balance between the foveated regions and visual quality. The label ultra does not establish that it is best for every headset or GPU, and the guide does not provide a universal FPS outcome for each level. Leave the defaults in place unless you have a specific reason to experiment and can judge the visual tradeoff in gameplay.
For most players, this means there is no reason to start by searching for console commands or choosing the most aggressive-sounding level. Establish that the built-in toggle works, then tune the normal SteamVR and Alyx settings first. If you later experiment with a variable, change only one and make a reversible comparison in a repeatable scene; the guide’s listed levels are options, not evidence that a particular one is universally optimal.
Is the game’s minimum GPU requirement enough for foveated rendering?
Not necessarily. Valve’s Steam listing gives a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB of VRAM as the game’s minimum requirement, while the foveation guide lists newer GPU generations for the feature. A card that meets Alyx’s minimum game requirement should not be assumed to expose the new toggle. Half-Life: Alyx on Steam
Check the compatibility list and backend first. The missing toggle alone is not a reason to buy a new GPU, and a supported card does not guarantee a particular frame rate.
If you are considering hardware, treat an NVIDIA GeForce RTX graphics card as a compatibility possibility, not a guaranteed performance result: the guide lists RTX 20-series and newer on the normal Windows path, but different models do not deliver identical performance. First check your existing card and backend, since a qualifying AMD or Intel GPU may expose the feature after using Vulkan. The available product information does not establish a price or a purchase as necessary to enable foveation, so there is no sound basis for an upgrade recommendation based only on a missing menu toggle.
What should I check before calling the setup optimized?
- The game is updated beyond the initial October 26 desktop release, including the October 28 fixes.
- The foveation toggle appears under Advanced Performance and is enabled, if your GPU/backend combination is supported.
- SteamVR render resolution, Alyx Fidelity, Texture Quality, and refresh target have been evaluated separately.
- Judgment is based on a repeatable gameplay scene rather than the menu or a single FPS number.
- Any temporary dynamic-resolution override has been removed after a controlled comparison.
Use those checks to settle on the sharpest, smoothest combination your own system can sustain. The evidence supports a settings-first process, not a single best preset, a guaranteed percentage uplift, or a GPU purchase based on the toggle alone.
A concise way to troubleshoot is to move from eligibility to load: update Alyx, confirm your GPU and rendering backend, enable the toggle if it is supported, then test SteamVR resolution and Alyx’s separate quality controls. Try a lower refresh target only when the GPU is struggling, and use a gameplay scene for every comparison. That order helps avoid two common mistakes—assuming the game’s minimum card automatically supports the feature, and lowering every setting before finding out what actually helped.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the foveated-rendering update need a separate download?
The desktop option was added in the game’s October 2026 update; the linked guide describes enabling it through Alyx’s settings rather than installing a separate feature package. If the option is missing, check the GPU generation and rendering backend.

Is a GTX 1060 enough to enable foveated rendering?
Valve lists a GTX 1060 with 6 GB VRAM as a minimum for the game, not as a supported foveation threshold. The PC guide’s NVIDIA feature list starts at GTX 16-series and RTX 20-series generations.
Can foveated rendering cause visual glitches?
Valve’s October 28 release notes document fixes for visual glitches involving decals and splatters after the October 26 desktop release. If you encounter problems, first confirm the game is updated and distinguish a remaining issue from reports about the earlier build.

Will switching to Vulkan always improve Alyx performance?
No universal backend speed ranking is established by the compatibility guide. Vulkan is required to expose the feature for the listed AMD and Intel Windows GPUs, but compare the actual experience on your system before treating it as a performance improvement.
Can I use foveated rendering without an eye-tracking headset?
Yes. The guide says a compatible GPU can use fixed foveated rendering with any VR headset. Gaze-following rendering is a separate case that requires a supported headset and SteamVR driver to deliver eye-tracking data to the game.
Why is my FPS unchanged even though foveation is enabled?
Alyx dynamically adjusts effective resolution. It may spend added performance headroom on image clarity rather than a higher FPS reading, and the feature is not guaranteed to help a system that is not GPU-limited.
Should I lower SteamVR render resolution before changing Alyx Fidelity?
Valve recommends trying SteamVR Auto and reducing render resolution if needed. You can also use Low Fidelity to diagnose performance, but change one setting at a time and evaluate Texture Quality separately because it is independent of overall Fidelity.

Is 90 Hz the best refresh rate for every headset?
No. Valve’s 90 Hz suggestion is specifically a test for an overtaxed Valve Index GPU, not a universal target for every headset. Compare your current target with 90 Hz in gameplay if the GPU cannot keep up.
The Bottom Line
Update Half-Life: Alyx, check GPU and backend eligibility, then enable Foveated Rendering if available. Test resolution, Fidelity, Texture Quality, and refresh rate one at a time in gameplay. Valve’s October 2026 notes describe a possible performance benefit, not a guaranteed FPS gain or universal best preset.
