Turn commands on when creating a new world

Enable commands in an existing world

Load the world and open the pause menu.

Select World Options, then switch on Allow Commands.

Return to the world and enter commands in chat with a leading slash.
Minecraft’s guide confirms that commands can be enabled after world creation. In Java Edition 26.3, the release notes place World Options in the pause menu. Earlier versions may show a slightly different menu path or the former “Allow cheats” wording.
Let friends use commands in your LAN world
Enabling commands for yourself and allowing guests to use them are separate permissions. Before opening a single-player world to LAN, check the multiplayer options for the guest command setting. Java Edition 26.3 calls the guest control Command Access; menu labels and placement can differ in earlier versions. Minecraft’s Java server guide describes choosing whether LAN guests may use cheats.
Why commands may not work on a server or Realm
Your single-player world setting does not grant permission on somebody else’s server. Multiplayer command use depends on your permission level. If you do not own or operate the server or Realm, ask its owner or operator to grant the necessary access. Minecraft’s commands guide covers these permission requirements.

Java Edition setting names and Bedrock differences
Java Edition renamed “Allow cheats” to Allow Commands in snapshot 24w04a. The official Java instructions explain enabling commands without attaching Bedrock’s achievement warning; do not apply Bedrock-specific settings or warnings to these Java steps.
