In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. Under Use Filter Keys, select the checkbox to enable the feature or clear it to disable it, then select OK if Windows displays a confirmation dialog. You can also toggle Filter Keys by holding Right Shift for eight seconds.
Filter Keys is an accessibility setting that changes how Windows handles brief or repeated keystrokes. It can help users who accidentally press keys more than once, but it can also make a physical keyboard appear slow, unresponsive or unusually noisy when enabled by accident.

How do you turn Filter Keys on or off in Windows 10?
The permanent switch is in the Windows 10 keyboard accessibility settings. The same control turns the feature on and off.
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Ease of Access.
- Choose Keyboard in the left pane.
- Find Use Filter Keys.
- To enable the feature, select the checkbox or switch. To disable it, clear the checkbox or switch.
- Select OK if a confirmation dialog appears.
This is the Windows 10 route documented in Lenovo’s support guidance. The wording can vary slightly between Windows 10 builds, but the Ease of Access and Keyboard locations are the relevant places to look.

Use the keyboard shortcut instead
Hold the Right Shift key for eight seconds. Windows uses that gesture to turn Filter Keys on or off. If you cannot find the setting quickly, press Windows+U to open Windows accessibility settings and then open the keyboard options.
What does Filter Keys change?
Microsoft describes Filter Keys as a keyboard-sensitivity control. It can ignore very brief keystrokes and repeated keystrokes instead of passing every signal immediately to Windows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Brief keystrokes
A user who has difficulty releasing a key cleanly may generate very short, unintended input. Filter Keys can disregard that input so a single intended press is less likely to become an accidental character or command.
Repeated keystrokes
Holding a key down or pressing it repeatedly can produce multiple inputs. Filtering changes how Windows interprets those events; it does not alter the physical switch, remove dirt from a keyboard or repair a damaged cable.
Who is the setting for?
Filter Keys is an accessibility aid for people who need more control over keyboard sensitivity. It is not a general performance mode, a keyboard diagnostic, or a replacement for driver and hardware troubleshooting.

Which way should you use to change Filter Keys?
Both methods control the same everyday Windows 10 setting, but they are useful in different situations.

The shortcut and the Settings switch are not separate versions of Filter Keys. The Settings page is the safer choice when you need to confirm whether the feature is currently enabled and inspect its activation options.
How do you stop the Filter Keys popup when you hold Shift?
Open the Filter Keys setup options and clear Turn on Filter Keys when the right SHIFT is pressed for 8 seconds. Dell documents this as the way to prevent accidental activation.
- Open the Windows 10 keyboard accessibility settings.
- Open the Filter Keys setup or related options.
- Locate Turn on Filter Keys when the right SHIFT is pressed for 8 seconds.
- Clear that option and apply the change.
This does not turn Filter Keys off by itself. It only blocks the specific eight-second Right Shift gesture. If Filter Keys is already active, disable the main Use Filter Keys switch separately.
Why is the keyboard slow, ignoring keystrokes or making clicking sounds?
An unexpectedly enabled Filter Keys setting can explain those symptoms, especially when an on-screen keyboard still works. Dell describes cases in which an internal or external physical keyboard becomes unresponsive and produces clicking sounds while typing after Filter Keys has been enabled accidentally.

Check the setting first
- Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
- Look at Use Filter Keys.
- If you do not need the accessibility feature, clear the switch.
- Type in a text field to retest the physical keyboard.
Also consider whether the Right Shift key was held for eight seconds. That gesture is easy to trigger while gaming, moving a hand across the keyboard, or holding Shift during another task.
Use the on-screen keyboard as a diagnostic clue
If the on-screen keyboard accepts input while the physical keyboard does not, check Filter Keys before assuming the keyboard has failed. This pattern is a reason to inspect the setting, not proof that Filter Keys is the only possible cause.
When the symptom remains
If the physical keyboard is still slow or unresponsive after Filter Keys is off, the cited support guidance does not establish a hardware diagnosis. Continue with ordinary keyboard and driver checks: reconnect an external keyboard, try another USB port or keyboard where available, inspect for stuck keys, and verify that Windows has not reported a device or driver error. Those checks address possible hardware or driver problems rather than changing the Filter Keys setting again.
What should you do if Filter Keys keeps turning on?
Disable the eight-second Right Shift activation option, then verify the main switch. This addresses the common situation in which the feature is useful when deliberately enabled but keeps appearing because the shortcut is being triggered unintentionally.
- Confirm whether Use Filter Keys is on or off.
- Clear Turn on Filter Keys when the right SHIFT is pressed for 8 seconds if accidental activation is the problem.
- Apply the change and test the keyboard with normal typing.
- If the behavior continues with the feature disabled, investigate keyboard, connection and driver causes instead of treating every missed keystroke as an accessibility-setting problem.
Disabling the shortcut is reversible. You can return to the same setup options later if you want the Right Shift gesture available again.

Is Windows 10 Filter Keys the same as Keyboard Filter?
No. The everyday Filter Keys switch is an Ease of Access setting for keyboard sensitivity. Keyboard Filter is a separate Microsoft feature for managed, dedicated-purpose devices.
| Characteristic | Filter Keys | Keyboard Filter |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Windows 10 Ease of Access keyboard settings | Microsoft’s Keyboard Filter feature for supported editions |
| Primary purpose | Ignore brief or repeated keystrokes for accessibility | Suppress specified key presses or key combinations on a controlled device |
| Typical audience | Individual Windows users who need keyboard-sensitivity assistance | Administrators configuring dedicated-purpose systems |
| Windows editions identified by Microsoft | Windows 10 accessibility settings | Windows 10 and Windows 11 Enterprise, Education and IoT editions |
| Restart requirement | No restart step is stated for the normal Ease of Access switch | Enabling or disabling can require a restart |
Do not search for the enterprise Keyboard Filter controls when your goal is simply to stop a Windows 10 keyboard from filtering short or repeated input. The two features solve different problems and have different configuration scopes.
Can Filter Keys fix a broken keyboard?
No. Filter Keys only changes the way Windows interprets keystrokes. It cannot repair a failed switch, liquid damage, a broken cable, a loose wireless connection or a faulty driver.
If turning the setting off restores normal typing, the change explains the immediate behavior. If it does not, treat the remaining issue as a general keyboard problem and continue with connection, device and driver checks. The available support descriptions do not justify declaring a hardware failure solely from clicking sounds or missed input.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A quick decision path for Windows 10 users
- Input is being ignored or delayed: check Use Filter Keys first.
- The feature is on and you do not need it: clear the switch and retest.
- A popup appears after holding Right Shift: clear the eight-second activation option.
- The on-screen keyboard works but the physical keyboard does not: check Filter Keys, then move to connection and driver troubleshooting if the setting is off.
- You are configuring a locked-down Enterprise, Education or IoT device: verify that you are dealing with Microsoft’s separate Keyboard Filter feature, not the Ease of Access switch.
Keeping those paths separate prevents a common mistake: changing an enterprise lockdown feature when the actual issue is an accidentally enabled accessibility setting, or blaming Filter Keys after it has already been disabled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Filter Keys affect keyboard input in games?
Filter Keys operates at the Windows keyboard-input level, so a game that receives filtered keystrokes may not see very brief or repeated presses in the same way. If controls feel delayed or repeated inputs are missing, check the Windows setting before changing in-game key bindings.
Why does the shortcut use the right Shift key?
Windows documents the eight-second gesture specifically for Right Shift. The available guidance does not identify an equivalent Left Shift gesture, so holding Left Shift alone should not be treated as the documented toggle.
Do I need to restart Windows after changing the normal Filter Keys switch?
The standard Ease of Access procedure describes changing the switch and applying the dialog, with no restart step. Restart language belongs to the separate enterprise Keyboard Filter feature, where enabling or disabling a configuration can require one.
Can I keep Filter Keys available without allowing accidental activation?
Yes. Leave the main feature available, but clear the option that activates it when Right Shift is held for eight seconds. You can then change the setting deliberately from the Keyboard accessibility page.
