In Windows 11, change the sound for a Focus session in the Clock app, not in Settings > System > Focus. Open Clock > Settings, expand End of session sound, and switch the control on or off. When it is on, choose a chime from the Alarm sound menu. The break-ending alert has its own control under End of break sound.
Microsoft documents that a Focus session produces a notification when it ends, while the detailed sound picker is documented by Windows 11 tutorials. Because Clock is updated separately from Windows, the wording or available sounds can differ by installed app version.

Use the Clock app’s settings. The complete Windows 11 path is Clock > Settings > End of session sound; the switch there controls the chime that plays when a Focus session finishes.
- Open Clock. Select Start, type Clock, and open the Clock app from the results. You can also find it through Windows Search.
- Open Clock settings. In Clock, select Settings. This is the app’s own settings page, not the Windows Settings page for Focus.
- Expand the session-sound section. Find End of session sound and expand it if its options are collapsed.
- Choose on or off. Turn the control off to silence the session-ending chime. Turn it on if you want an audible alert.
- Pick a sound when enabled. With the control on, open the Alarm sound drop-down and select the available chime you want.
- Handle breaks separately. If the sound you hear is at the end of a break rather than at the end of the work session, adjust End of break sound instead.
The switch affects the Focus session-end sound; it does not replace the separate notification that Windows associates with the end of a Focus session. Microsoft’s support wording is, “You’ll receive a notification when your focus session ends.”

What should I see after changing the switch?
The setting should remain in the Clock app for later Focus sessions. Selecting a different item in Alarm sound changes the selected chime, while switching End of session sound off removes that chime. If you only changed the break setting, the session-ending sound is unchanged.
How can I change the sound when a Focus session ends?
First enable End of session sound, then use its Alarm sound menu. The tutorial evidence for Windows 11 identifies Tap as the default in the version it describes, but that should not be treated as a universal default for every Clock release.

- Open Clock and select Settings.
- Expand End of session sound.
- Turn the sound control on if it is disabled.
- Open Alarm sound and select another listed sound.
There is no need to change the Focus duration, timer display, taskbar behavior, or Do not disturb options merely to select a chime. Those controls belong to the broader Focus configuration; the sound selector is located in Clock’s settings.
Why the menu may look different
Clock is an app, and labels can vary with the installed Clock app version. A tutorial’s reported default is therefore a useful reference, not a promise that every Windows 11 computer will show the same default or the same list in the same order. If your headings differ slightly, look for the session-ending sound section in Clock settings rather than relying on an exact visual match.
How do I change the sound that plays when a Focus break ends?
Use the separate End of break sound control in Clock settings. A break-ending alert is not governed by End of session sound, so changing one does not change the other.

- Open Clock > Settings.
- Find and expand End of break sound.

They are two independent Clock controls distinguished by when the alert occurs. Use the session control for the end of a Focus work period and the break control for the end of a scheduled break.
| Alert timing | Clock setting | Reported tutorial default | What changing it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus session finishes | End of session sound and its Alarm sound menu | Tap in the cited Windows 11 tutorial; not established as universal | Turns the session chime on or off and selects its sound |
| Focus break finishes | End of break sound | Descending in the cited Windows 11 tutorial; not established as universal | Turns the break chime on or off and controls the break alert |
This distinction explains why changing a setting can appear to have no effect: a sound heard at a break boundary is controlled by the break section, even if the session sound was configured correctly.
Why can’t I find a sound picker in Windows Settings?
Microsoft’s Focus settings page describes Focus behavior but does not place the sound picker there. It lists options such as session duration, showing the timer in Clock, hiding taskbar badges and flashing, and enabling Do not disturb; the detailed Windows 11 tutorials place the sound controls in the Clock app instead.
Do not send yourself to Settings > System > Focus to choose the chime. That page can configure how Focus behaves, but the sound switch and Alarm sound menu are under Clock > Settings. Microsoft confirms the end-of-session notification, but its support page does not specify a sound-selection path.

Notification versus sound
A notification at the end of a session and an audible chime are related but not identical concepts. Windows can report that the session ended, while the Clock sound control determines whether the dedicated session chime is enabled and which sound is selected. This is why Microsoft’s general Focus documentation and the Clock tutorial describe different parts of the experience.
Do these sound controls work the same way in Windows 10?
The official Focus documentation covers both Windows 11 and Windows 10 at a high level, including the fact that a Focus session ends with a notification. The detailed click path for End of session sound, Alarm sound, and End of break sound is specifically documented for Windows 11 in the available tutorial evidence.
Do not assume that a Windows 10 installation has identical labels, defaults, or menus. If you are on Windows 10, open Clock and inspect its settings; if the named sections are absent, the evidence does not establish an equivalent picker for your installed version. The same caution applies to future Windows 11 Clock releases.
What should I check if the Focus sound is not the one I expected?
Most apparent failures come from using the wrong control or looking in the wrong app. Check the following in order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm the event. Decide whether the sound occurs when the Focus work session ends or when a break ends. Use End of session sound for the former and End of break sound for the latter.
- Confirm the switch. An Alarm sound choice matters only when its corresponding sound control is enabled.
- Confirm the app. Reopen Clock > Settings; the picker is not documented under Windows Settings > System > Focus.
- Check the selected menu item. The sound list and its default can differ by Clock app version, so compare the currently selected item with the sound you intended to use.
- Separate Focus from ordinary Clock features. Focus session sounds are not the same controls as ordinary alarms and timers. Changing an alarm or timer sound does not configure the Focus session chime.
If the section names or options are missing entirely, that is a version or edition difference that the available documentation does not resolve. Avoid treating a tutorial screenshot as proof that every Clock build exposes identical controls.

Should I mute the sound or choose a different chime?
Mute the session sound when you want the end notification without an audible cue. Leave it on and select a different Alarm sound when you need to recognize the session ending by ear, such as when you are away from the screen.
Use separate choices for work and breaks
Because the controls are independent, you can keep a session-ending sound enabled while silencing break alerts, or do the reverse. This lets you distinguish the two events without changing the length or scheduling of the Focus session.
Keep the setting tied to the event you care about
If you are trying to avoid interruptions during a break, change the break control rather than disabling the session sound. If you need a cue to stop working, change the session control rather than an ordinary alarm. Naming the event first prevents an otherwise correct setting from appearing ineffective.
Does changing Focus sound affect ordinary alarms and timers?
No separate evidence identifies Focus sound controls as replacements for ordinary Clock alarms or timers. Treat Focus session and break sounds as their own feature within Clock. Configure ordinary alarms and timers through their respective Clock controls instead of using the Focus sections.
What exactly happens when a Focus session ends?
Microsoft states that you receive a notification when the Focus session ends. In Windows 11 Clock, the documented session-sound switch determines whether the additional session chime is enabled, and the Alarm sound menu selects that chime when enabled.

The notification statement does not guarantee that every Windows version, Clock build, or device will play a sound by default. The safest way to control the audible part is to inspect the two sound sections in your installed Clock app and set the one that matches the event you want to hear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set a different Focus sound for each individual session?
The documented Clock interface provides a general session sound setting and a selected item in the Alarm sound menu. It does not document per-session sound profiles, so changing the menu selection should be understood as changing the setting used by subsequent sessions rather than creating a one-time exception.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does Windows still show a Focus notification after I turn the sound off?
The sound switch controls the audible chime, while Microsoft separately describes a notification when a session ends. Silencing the chime therefore does not imply that the end notification itself will disappear.
Is the “Tap” sound guaranteed to be the default on every PC?
No. Tap is the default reported by one Windows 11 tutorial for the version it covers. Clock app versions can vary, so check the selected item in your own Alarm sound menu.
Can I silence break alerts without silencing session-end alerts?
Yes. The two events use separate controls: End of break sound handles the break boundary, while End of session sound handles the end of the Focus work period. Change only the section for the event you want to mute.
