On Windows 10, the normal way to stop the Game Mode message is Start > Settings > Gaming > Game Mode, then clear Get Game Mode notifications. If that checkbox is not present on your build, set the per-user registry value HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftGameBarShowGameModeNotifications to the DWORD value 0.
That setting controls the Game Mode notification itself. Xbox Game Bar tips, capture confirmations, social alerts, and notifications from other apps use separate controls. The sections below show how to identify the alert and silence only what you do not want.

Which Windows 10 gaming notification are you trying to remove?
The wording and appearance of the alert usually identify the right setting. A Game Mode confirmation is different from a Game Bar tip or a notification generated by another sender.
Game Mode confirmation or tip
This is the notification controlled by Get Game Mode notifications on the Game Mode settings page. If the checkbox is available, clearing it is the narrowest fix because it targets that message rather than every Windows notification.

Xbox Game Bar tips, social alerts, or capture messages
Messages about the Game Bar, friends, clips, screenshots, or recording are handled inside the Game Bar overlay. A “game clip recorded” message is generally a capture-related Game Bar notification, not the legacy Game Mode checkbox.
Every notification during a game
If the goal is a quiet screen while playing, use Focus assist’s automatic rules. This filters eligible notifications during a game or while an app is full screen, without permanently disabling notifications for the rest of Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOne app or sender everywhere
For a persistent alert from a particular app, use Windows 10’s sender-level notification controls. This is broader than silencing one Game Mode message, but it does not affect unrelated senders.
How do I turn off Game Mode notifications in Windows 10 Settings?
On legacy Windows 10 builds that still expose the control, the setting takes only a few clicks.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Gaming.
- Open Game Mode in the left pane.
- Clear Get Game Mode notifications.
Close Settings and launch a game to check the result. This changes the Game Mode notification preference for the signed-in Windows user; it does not turn Game Mode off. If the checkbox is missing, do not assume you opened the wrong page. Microsoft has changed or removed some legacy controls across Windows 10 builds, so use the registry fallback below.

What should I do if “Get Game Mode notifications” is missing?
The per-user registry value is the fallback for builds where the graphical checkbox is absent. Registry Editor changes apply to the current Windows account, so edit the account that receives the alert.
Recommended Free Tools
Before editing the registry
- Sign in to the Windows account that shows the notification.
- Make the change only if you are comfortable editing the registry. An incorrect edit can affect Windows behavior, so avoid changing neighboring values.
- If you want a recovery point, export the relevant key from Registry Editor before changing it.
Set the notification value to zero
- Press Windows+R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftGameBar. - Find the DWORD value
ShowGameModeNotifications. - Open it and set its value data to
0. The value0disables Game Mode notifications;1enables them. - Close Registry Editor and test the game notification again.
If ShowGameModeNotifications does not exist, the legacy control may not be implemented on that installation, or the alert may come from another component. Do not create unrelated registry values as a guess. First identify whether the message is from Game Bar or another Windows sender.
How do I restore the notification?
Return to the same registry path and change ShowGameModeNotifications to 1. If you exported the key before editing, you can also restore that backup. The registry path begins with HKEY_CURRENT_USER, abbreviated as HKCU; it is not a machine-wide setting under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
How do I stop Xbox Game Bar tips and capture alerts?
Game Bar notifications have their own controls. Use the overlay rather than the Game Mode page when the message mentions tips, recording, clips, screenshots, friends, or social activity.
- Start a game or press Windows+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Select the Settings gear in the Game Bar.
- Open Notifications.
- Turn off Show me tips.
- Disable any unwanted notification categories, such as social or capture-related alerts.
These switches affect Game Bar’s own alerts. They do not necessarily stop standard Windows toast notifications from other apps. If a recording confirmation continues after tips are disabled, return to the same Notifications panel and check the capture-related category rather than changing the Game Mode registry value.

How can I hide notifications only when I am playing?
Use Focus assist when you want normal notifications at other times but less interruption during games or full-screen applications. Microsoft has described Windows notifications as hidden by default while a full-screen game is running, but automatic-rule behavior depends on the Windows 10 build and your Focus assist configuration.
- Open Start > Settings > System.
- Select Focus assist.
- Under automatic rules, enable When I’m playing a game.
- Enable When I’m using an app in full screen mode if you also want the rule to apply to other full-screen software.
- Choose the notification level you want. Select Alarms only for the strictest built-in option, or use the available priority setting if you need selected alerts.
Focus assist filters notifications for the qualifying session; it does not remove the Game Mode preference or change Game Bar’s own settings. A game running in a window, or a borderless mode that Windows does not classify as full screen, may not trigger the full-screen rule. The “When I’m playing a game” rule is therefore the more relevant option for supported games.
How do I block one sender in Windows 10?
When the same app keeps appearing in the lower-right corner, turn that sender off in Windows notification settings.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications & actions.
- Scroll to the list of senders.
- Select the app or sender producing the alert.
- Switch its notifications to Off, or open its detailed options and disable only the notification types you do not want.
This setting is broader than the Game Mode checkbox: it applies to that sender throughout Windows, not only during games. Use it when the notification is clearly attributed to a particular app and you want it gone in every context.

Why does Game Bar keep popping up after I changed Game Mode?
Changing Game Mode does not control every overlay message. Work through the alert source in this order.
- Read the wording and identify the source. A Game Mode message points to the Game Mode checkbox or registry value. Tips, recording, clips, and social messages point to Game Bar Notifications.
- Check Game Bar’s tip switch and categories. Press Windows+G, open Settings, choose Notifications, and review both Show me tips and the individual categories.
- Decide whether you want session-only quiet. If notifications are acceptable outside games, configure Focus assist instead of disabling a sender permanently.
- Find the sender in Notifications & actions. A notification generated by another app will continue until that sender is disabled or filtered.
- Recheck the per-user registry value. If the Game Mode checkbox is absent and the alert is genuinely a Game Mode alert, confirm that
HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftGameBarShowGameModeNotificationsis set to DWORD0for the account receiving it.
If none of these controls matches the message, capture its exact text and the icon shown in the notification. Windows 10 builds can label the same category differently, and a similarly worded toast may come from Game Bar, a game publisher’s launcher, or another Windows sender.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Windows 10 still support these settings?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for the operating system. An installed Windows 10 PC can still expose the Game Mode, Game Bar, Focus assist, and Notifications & actions controls, but their labels and availability vary by build.
That support status explains why a current installation may not match older screenshots or instructions. The legacy checkbox can be missing even when Game Mode itself is present; in that case, the per-user registry value is the documented fallback for the specific Game Mode notification.
What is the safest way to test the change?
Change one control at a time and trigger the same action that produced the alert. For example, if recording a clip generated the message, leave Game Mode unchanged while testing Game Bar’s capture notification category. If you disable several systems at once, it becomes difficult to tell which setting affected the result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Game Mode notifications disable Game Mode itself?
No. The checkbox and the ShowGameModeNotifications value control whether Windows displays that message; they do not switch the Game Mode feature off. You can therefore keep the feature enabled while hiding its confirmation.
Is the registry setting shared by every Windows account on the PC?
No. The path starts with HKEY_CURRENT_USER, so the value belongs to the account that edited it. Other Windows accounts can retain a different setting and may need their own change.
Why do notifications still appear in a borderless or windowed game?
Focus assist’s full-screen rule depends on how Windows classifies the application. A borderless or windowed game may not satisfy the full-screen condition, so enable the separate “When I’m playing a game” rule or adjust the sender’s notification setting.
Can I keep some Game Bar alerts while removing only the recording message?
Yes. Game Bar’s Notifications page separates tips and other categories, allowing you to disable the capture-related category while leaving categories you still want enabled. Test a single category at a time so the source of each remaining alert is clear.
