Choose the control that matches your goal: Apple Screen Time can block in-app purchases completely; Apple Ask to Buy can require a parent to approve a child’s eligible purchases; and Google Play can require approval for a child’s in-app purchases or authentication for an individual Android account. These controls mainly cover transactions processed through Apple or Google billing, so web checkout and other billing systems may need separate restrictions.
Choose the right control first
“Turn off in-app purchases” and “require approval” are different outcomes. Blocking rejects the transaction without a review request. Approval keeps purchasing available but pauses it until the parent or account holder authorizes it. Authentication protects an account by requiring its password, screen lock, or biometric method; it is not the same as a parent-managed child approval workflow.

Identify which account actually owns the app and payment method. A restriction on a child’s Apple Account does not automatically govern another Apple Account signed in on the same device, and a Google Play approval scope is assigned to the selected family member rather than to every account on every Android device. If a child uses more than one device, check each device and account that can reach the store.

Decide whether you need a hard stop or a review queue. A hard stop is easier to explain: no in-app purchase can complete from that store on the restricted device. A review queue is better when you sometimes want to allow a purchase, but it requires the approving adult to notice and respond to requests. For either approach, make sure the adult’s account, family relationship, and payment method are the ones you intend to use.
After changing the setting, test the result with the account and store that normally process the transaction. Do not assume that an app’s purchase button proves which billing system will be used; some apps open a browser or use a separate payment service.
Block in-app purchases on an iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Screen Time restriction is the direct choice when no in-app spending should be possible from the device. Screen Time must be enabled before the purchase restriction can be changed.

Turn on the restriction
- Open Settings.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Open Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn the restrictions on.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Tap In-app Purchases.
- Choose Don’t Allow. On some current Apple support screens, the equivalent choice is labeled Blocked.
After this setting is active, an in-app purchase attempt on that iPhone or iPad is blocked rather than sent to a parent for review. This is the appropriate setting for a device that should have no in-app spending at all.
Protect the setting with a Screen Time passcode
Create a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know. Without a separate passcode, anyone who can unlock the device may be able to change the restriction. Store the passcode privately and do not reuse a code the child already knows.
Apple also provides a password requirement for future purchases. That is a separate control: it adds authentication at purchase time, while Don’t Allow or Blocked removes the permitted purchase action altogether. If the objective is a complete block, leave the in-app-purchase restriction set to the blocking value.
Check the result
- Confirm that Content & Privacy Restrictions remains on.
- Reopen iTunes & App Store Purchases and verify that In-app Purchases still shows Don’t Allow or Blocked.
- Make sure the child does not know the Screen Time passcode.
Require approval for a child’s iPhone or iPad purchases
Use Apple’s Ask to Buy when a parent wants to decide case by case instead of banning every purchase. The child can request an eligible app download or in-app purchase, and the organizer or designated parent or guardian decides whether it proceeds.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Family.
- Select the child’s name.
- Choose Apps & Websites.
- Tap Restrictions.
- Open Ask to Buy.
- Turn on Require Purchase Approval.
The adult managing the setting must be the Family Sharing organizer or a parent/guardian designated in the family group. Apple recommends keeping the software current across the devices used for Family Sharing management.

What happens when the child asks
When the child attempts to download an eligible app or make an in-app purchase, the adult receives a request. Approving it allows the transaction or download to complete and adds the item to the child’s Apple Account. Declining it prevents the transaction or download.
Ask to Buy applies to eligible app downloads and in-app purchases. Apple states that a child needs permission to download or purchase an app or make an in-app purchase regardless of the app’s age rating. Age, country, and region can affect Ask to Buy defaults and availability, so the exact behavior may not be identical for every family account.
Ask to Buy versus a complete block
- Ask to Buy: the child can submit a request, and the parent reviews it.
- Screen Time Don’t Allow or Blocked: in-app purchases are stopped on the device without an approval workflow.
Do not use both controls as a substitute for choosing a policy. If every in-app purchase must fail, use Screen Time’s blocking value. If occasional purchases are acceptable after review, use Ask to Buy.
Require approval for in-app purchases on Android
Google Play family groups provide approval scopes for a selected family member. The setting applies to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system.
Set approval for only in-app purchases
- Open Google Play.
- Tap the profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Family.
- Tap Manage family members.
- Select the family member whose purchases you want to control.
- Tap Purchase approvals.
- Choose Only in-app purchases.
With that scope selected, an in-app purchase processed through Google Play requires the family approval process. The parent reviews the request and enters the Google Account password to approve it. Google says the family manager receives an email receipt when a purchase is completed.
Choose a broader or narrower approval scope

Select Only in-app purchases for the narrow goal in this article. Select All purchases that use the family payment method when purchases beyond in-app items must also wait for approval.
Confirm the family relationship
If Purchase approvals is missing, check that the Google Account is in the intended family group and that the person changing the setting has the family-manager or appropriate parent relationship. The selected family member must be the account whose purchases are being controlled; changing a setting on the parent’s account does not impose it on a child’s account.

Turn on purchase verification for an individual Android account
If the Android device belongs to the account owner and the concern is accidental or unauthorized tapping, use Google Play’s purchase verification rather than creating a child approval workflow. Verification asks for the account’s configured authentication method when a purchase is made.

Enable verification
- Open Google Play.
- Tap the profile picture.
- Choose Payments & subscriptions.
- Tap Purchase verification.
- Open Verification requirement or Verification frequency.
- Choose the desired option and confirm.
Google describes purchase verification as a way to help prevent accidental or unauthorized purchases on the device. Keep the Google Account password, screen-lock code, and biometric credential private from anyone who should not be able to authorize a transaction.
Verification is not child approval
Purchase verification protects one Google Play account. It does not send a request to a parent, create a family-manager decision, or distinguish a child’s request from the owner’s request. Use the family-group Purchase approvals setting when an adult must review a child’s purchase before it is completed.
Know what these controls do not cover
Apple purchases outside Apple billing
Apple’s in-app-purchase restriction is tied to Apple’s distribution and billing ecosystem. Apple warns that restricting in-app purchases may not prevent a transaction made in an app installed from an alternative app marketplace or a purchase completed on an external website. If an app opens a web checkout, apply restrictions through that service, payment account, or website as well.
Android purchases outside Google Play billing
Google’s family approval settings apply to purchases made through Google Play billing. A developer’s separate billing system or an external web checkout may not generate a Google Play approval request. For those transactions, review the service’s own parental controls and the payment account used to fund the purchase.
Different stores and accounts can bypass an otherwise correct setting
- An Apple restriction on one child’s device does not automatically control a different Apple Account or another device.
- A Google Play approval scope applies to the selected family member, not every account signed in on every Android device.
- Changing the payment method does not replace the need to configure the relevant purchase control.
Troubleshoot a missing setting or an unexpected purchase
The Apple in-app-purchase option is missing
- Open Settings > Screen Time and confirm that Screen Time is enabled.
- Open Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn restrictions on.
- Return to iTunes & App Store Purchases and look for In-app Purchases.
- Check for the alternate label Blocked if Don’t Allow is not shown.
If the restriction can be changed by the child, reset the Screen Time passcode and use one the child does not know.
Ask to Buy does not appear or no request arrives
- Verify that the adult is the Family Sharing organizer or a designated parent/guardian.
- Confirm that the child is selected under Settings > Family on the adult’s device.
- Check the full path: Apps & Websites > Restrictions > Ask to Buy.
- Update the software on the Family Sharing devices, as Apple recommends current software for managing child controls.
- Consider age, country, and region differences, which can affect Ask to Buy defaults and availability.
Google Play approval is not requested
- Open Google Play > profile picture > Settings > Family > Manage family members.
- Select the correct family member and inspect Purchase approvals.
- Confirm that the scope is not No approval required.
- Check that the transaction is being processed through Google Play billing.
- Verify that the person managing the setting has the correct family-manager or parent relationship.
If the purchase uses another billing system or an external website, Google Play may not issue an approval request even when the family setting is correct.
Android asks for verification when you expected parent approval
Check which Google Account is signed in and whether the device is using individual Purchase verification or a family member’s Purchase approvals. Verification authenticates the account at checkout; family approval sends the request to the family’s approving adult. They are separate controls and can produce different prompts.

- Decide whether the policy is a complete block, case-by-case approval, or authentication for the account owner.
- On Apple devices, use Screen Time’s Don’t Allow or Blocked value for a complete block.
- On Apple devices in Family Sharing, enable Require Purchase Approval for a review workflow.
- On Android family accounts, choose Only in-app purchases for the narrowest approval scope.
- Choose All purchases that use the family payment method or All content only when the broader scope is intentional.
- On an individual Android account, configure Purchase verification and keep the verification method private.
- Test the setting with the account and store actually used for the purchase.
- Review apps that open web checkout or use another billing system, because Apple and Google controls may not cover those transactions.
Which setting should you use?
Use a complete block when spending is never allowed
Set Apple Screen Time in-app purchases to Don’t Allow or Blocked, protect Screen Time with a private passcode, and separately examine any external checkout used by the app.

Use approval when purchases may be allowed after review
Turn on Apple Ask to Buy for a child in Family Sharing, or set the child’s Google Play family approval scope to Only in-app purchases. The adult can then approve legitimate requests while declining the rest.
Use authentication for the owner’s own account
Enable Google Play Purchase verification when the goal is to stop accidental taps on an adult’s Android account. On Apple, use the available purchase-password requirement as an additional authentication gate, while remembering that it does not replace Screen Time’s complete block.

Does Screen Time send a request to a parent?
No. Setting Apple’s in-app purchases value to Don’t Allow or Blocked rejects the purchase on that device. It does not create an approval notification. Use Family Sharing’s Ask to Buy and Require Purchase Approval when you want the child to submit a request for a decision.
Will Ask to Buy cover an in-app purchase regardless of the app’s age rating?
Apple says a child needs permission to download or purchase an app or make an in-app purchase regardless of the app’s age rating. Availability and default behavior can still vary with the child’s age, country, and region.
Which adult can approve an Apple request?

You may be using individual Purchase verification rather than a supervised family member’s Purchase approvals. Verification asks the account owner for the configured password, screen lock, or biometric method. Family approval routes the request to the approving adult.

Can I use Apple’s purchase-password setting as a complete block?
No. A password requirement is an authentication gate: someone who knows or can supply the credential may still complete the purchase. For a complete block, use Screen Time’s Don’t Allow or Blocked value and protect the Screen Time passcode.
What should I do after an unexpected purchase?
First identify whether it was processed by Apple, Google Play, an alternative marketplace, or an external website. Then check the relevant account, family member, approval scope, and billing system. A correct Apple or Google setting cannot retroactively govern a transaction that used a different store or payment path.
