How to Turn Off Windows Update in Windows 10 Safely

You cannot permanently turn off Windows Update through Windows 10’s Settings. Microsoft allows a temporary pause, while administrators can change automatic-update behavior so Windows notifies you, downloads without installing, schedules installation, or leaves downloading and installation to you manually. Registry editing can enforce similar policies but carries a real risk of damaging the operating system.

For most people, pause updates or schedule a restart. Use Group Policy when you administer a device and need predictable maintenance windows. Treat registry changes as an advanced, reversible last resort—and remember that standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Can you permanently turn off Windows Update in Windows 10?

No. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says updates cannot be stopped entirely because they are required to keep a device safe and secure; updates will eventually need to be downloaded and installed regardless of the settings you choose. Windows 10 therefore offers a temporary pause in Settings rather than a permanent consumer “off” switch.

There are three different goals that are often confused:

  • Suppress automatic behavior until you change it: an administrator can use the documented registry policy, with a backup and rollback plan.

None of these removes the responsibility to maintain a supported, patched system. Standard Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so disabling update activity is not a way to avoid an ongoing stream of ordinary supported releases.

How do I pause Windows 10 updates?

The Settings app provides the lowest-risk way to stop update activity for a short period. It changes the current Windows Update setting for the device without editing system policy or the registry.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Pause updates for 7 days.
  3. For a later resume date, open Advanced options and choose the date on which updates should resume.

The pause is temporary. When the pause limit is reached, Windows requires the latest updates to be installed before you can select another pause. Plan the resume date around a maintenance window rather than treating the control as a permanent switch.

If your real problem is an unexpected reboot, pausing delivery is usually unnecessary. Use the Windows Update page’s restart scheduling control, and configure active hours so Windows knows when the computer is normally in use. This allows updates to arrive while reducing the chance of a restart interrupting a game, stream, or other work.

How do I control automatic updates with Group Policy?

Administrators can use the documented Configure Automatic Updates policy to choose how Windows obtains and installs updates. Open the policy editor and go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Configure Automatic Updates.

The policy’s choices are modes of automatic behavior, not a promise that the operating system will never need updating:

Policy setting What Windows does Useful when
2 — Notify for download and auto install Notifies users that updates are ready to download; the user then downloads and installs them from Windows Update. You need approval before update files are downloaded.
3 — Auto download and notify for install Downloads updates in the background and notifies users when they are ready to install. You want downloads completed before choosing an installation time.
4 — Auto download and schedule the install Downloads updates automatically; an administrator supplies the installation schedule. You operate a planned maintenance window.
Disabled Available updates must be downloaded and installed manually from Windows Update. You need explicit manual control over each update cycle.

After selecting a mode, apply the policy and keep a written record of the choice. A policy that requires manual installation shifts the scheduling and security work to the administrator; it does not eliminate that work. Check Windows Update deliberately and install appropriate updates during each maintenance window.

Which Group Policy mode is the least disruptive?

Mode 3 is a practical compromise for many managed PCs: Windows obtains the files in the background, but installation remains a deliberate action. Mode 4 is better when a fixed schedule is essential. Mode 2 minimizes unsolicited downloads but requires someone to respond to the notification. Choosing Disabled gives the most manual control and also creates the greatest risk of forgetting maintenance.

How do I use the registry to disable automatic updates?

Registry policy is an advanced administrative method. Microsoft warns that “serious problems might occur” if the registry is modified incorrectly, and says the resulting problems might require reinstalling Windows. Use this approach only when you understand the recovery plan and can restore the original policy.

Prepare a backup before editing

  • Sign in with an administrator account.
  • Record the existing values in the Windows Update policy area before changing them.
  • In Registry Editor, export the relevant key so the original configuration can be restored. Keep the export in a location available even if Windows Update behavior changes.
  • Decide when you will return the device to a maintained update policy; do not leave an indefinite change without an owner.

Change the documented policy values

  1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdateAU.
  2. Locate or create the documented REG_DWORD values. NoAutoUpdate set to 1 disables Automatic Updates; set to 0 to enable them.
  3. If you need graduated behavior instead of a complete automatic-update disablement, set AUOptions to the mode you require: 2 for notification of download and installation, 3 for automatic download with installation notification, or 4 for automatic download with scheduled installation.
  4. Close Registry Editor and allow the policy to take effect. Check Windows Update to confirm that the displayed behavior matches the mode you selected.

Do not use both values casually. Decide whether you want NoAutoUpdate=1 or one of the graduated AUOptions modes, document the intended result, and keep the exported key and original values for recovery.

How do I roll the registry policy back?

Return to the same key, restore the values you recorded, or import the backup you created before editing. A value of NoAutoUpdate=0 enables Automatic Updates again; removing an administrative value can also return control to the normal Windows Update configuration when that is appropriate for the device. Reopen Windows Update and check for updates manually after restoring the policy.

Does a metered connection stop Windows Update?

No. Marking a network connection as metered can reduce data use because Microsoft says some Windows updates will not be installed automatically over a metered connection. It is a bandwidth-management measure, not a complete shutdown.

Use it when a cellular or capped connection makes large downloads inconvenient, but do not rely on it as an update policy. Microsoft separately states that updates cannot be stopped entirely. When the device returns to a normal connection, review Windows Update and install the updates appropriate for your maintenance plan.

How do I stop Windows Update from restarting my PC?

Control the restart rather than suppressing update delivery. From Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, use the option to schedule the restart for a convenient time. Configure active hours to identify the period when the computer is normally being used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This approach addresses the interruption directly: updates can remain available, while the restart is moved outside your active period. It is safer than disabling automatic behavior merely because a reboot would be inconvenient.

Which Windows 10 update-control method should you choose?

The right choice depends on how long you need control, whether you administer the whole device, and how much manual maintenance you can reliably perform.

Method Duration Scope Control Risk and maintenance
Settings pause Up to the selected seven-day pause or the chosen resume date Current Windows 10 device setting Temporarily delays updates Low risk; the latest updates are required before another pause can be selected
Configure Automatic Updates policy Until an administrator changes the policy Device-wide administrative policy Notify, download and notify, schedule installation, or require manual installation Managed and reversible, but someone must continue maintenance
Registry policy Until the registry values are changed or restored Device-wide policy key NoAutoUpdate or the documented AUOptions modes Advanced; an incorrect edit can cause serious problems and might require reinstalling Windows
Metered connection While the connection is treated as metered Network-dependent behavior Some updates are not installed automatically Reduces data use but does not disable Windows Update

For a short delay, use Settings. For a managed maintenance window, use Group Policy. Reserve the registry for administrators who need policy-level control and have documented recovery steps. If the only symptom is an untimely reboot, active hours and restart scheduling are more targeted than any of these suppression methods.

What does Windows 10’s end of support change?

Microsoft Support states that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. For standard Windows 10, Microsoft says technical assistance, feature updates, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Microsoft directs eligible users toward Windows 11 or the Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Learn identifies version 22H2 as the final general-availability Windows 10 version. That version label does not extend standard support beyond the retirement date. Devices enrolled in an eligible Extended Security Updates program have a different support situation, so verify enrollment rather than assuming ordinary Windows Update coverage.

Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) releases follow separate lifecycle policies. An LTSC device should be evaluated against the lifecycle for its specific release; do not apply the standard Windows 10 date automatically to every LTSC installation.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

This lifecycle context changes the practical decision. On a standard Windows 10 PC, disabling update behavior can leave the device without current security servicing rather than merely postponing a routine patch. Consider Windows 11 compatibility or an eligible security-update path before making a persistent policy change.

What can go wrong, and how do you recover?

  • The pause button is unavailable: a device policy may already control Windows Update. Review the Configure Automatic Updates policy and any registry values before making another change.
  • Updates resume after the pause: that is expected. The pause is time-limited, and Windows requires the latest updates before another pause can be chosen.
  • Updates download but do not install: check whether policy mode 3 is selected; that mode downloads in the background and waits for an installation notification or action.
  • A scheduled installation occurs at an unwanted time: review policy mode 4 and its administrator-defined schedule, then adjust the maintenance window.
  • Windows Update behaves unpredictably after a registry edit: stop making additional changes, restore the exported key or the original values, and verify the policy in Windows Update. If Windows becomes unusable, the registry warning’s possibility of requiring a Windows reinstall is real.
  • You forgot to maintain a manually controlled PC: return to a supported automatic or scheduled policy, then check Windows Update and install the current updates appropriate to the device’s support status.

What should you check before turning off automatic behavior?

  • Confirm whether the device is standard Windows 10, enrolled in Consumer Extended Security Updates, or running an LTSC release.
  • Choose a specific maintenance date and an owner for manual update checks.
  • Prefer the Settings pause for a short interruption or restart scheduling for a reboot problem.
  • If using Group Policy, write down the selected mode and schedule.
  • If using the registry, export the AU key, record the original values, and document the rollback procedure before changing anything.
  • After the maintenance window, verify Windows Update and restore a policy that keeps the device appropriately maintained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Windows 10 version 22H2 still covered by normal Microsoft support?

No. Version 22H2 is the final general-availability Windows 10 release, but standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A device needs an eligible Extended Security Updates arrangement or a different supported operating system for continued security servicing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the October 14, 2025 date apply to every Windows 10 installation?

It applies to standard Windows 10 support. LTSC editions follow separate lifecycle policies, so their support dates must be checked for the specific LTSC release installed.

Which setting is best if I only need to avoid a reboot during a gaming session?

Keep update delivery enabled and use active hours plus the restart-scheduling control on the Windows Update page. Those settings target the interruption without creating a long-term manual patching obligation.

What is the practical difference between a seven-day pause and an administrative policy?

A pause is a short, user-facing delay that ends on a limit or selected resume date. A policy remains in force until an administrator changes it, so it requires a documented maintenance routine and a clear rollback plan.
