To change Shift Lock in Roblox, open the in-experience menu, go to Settings, turn on Shift Lock Switch, then press Shift on your keyboard. It works only when the experience allows players to switch camera modes.
How to turn on Shift Lock
- Join the Roblox experience.
- Open the Roblox menu and select Settings.
- Find Shift Lock Switch and turn it on.
- Return to the experience and press Shift to toggle the camera mode.
Roblox Support describes the setting this way: “Shift Lock Switch enables you to toggle between camera modes by pressing the Shift key on your keyboard.” Roblox Support: In-experience Settings and Help
What changes when you toggle it?
Shift Lock switches between camera modes; it does not change your character or unlock a camera option that an experience has restricted. Roblox describes Classic as a camera that stays fixed until you adjust it manually, while Follow rotates with your avatar as it moves left or right.
Why Shift Lock may not work
- The switch is missing or unavailable: The experience creator may have disabled mouse lock or locked the camera mode. Roblox says switching between Classic and Follow is available only when the developer has not locked the camera mode. Creator documentation also includes an
StarterPlayer.EnableMouseLockOptionsetting that controls whether players can use mouse lock. Roblox Creator Hub: StarterPlayer - Pressing Shift does nothing: Check that Shift Lock Switch is enabled in the in-experience Settings menu. If it is enabled but still has no effect, the experience may restrict camera switching.
- You are playing on a phone or tablet: Roblox documents Shift as the keyboard toggle. Touch controls allow camera movement by dragging the screen, but Roblox’s general instructions do not establish a universal mobile Shift Lock toggle. Can you change Shift Lock from Roblox Studio?
The steps above are for players using an experience. Roblox Creator Hub documentation includes developer settings and camera-control APIs, but those are not player-facing ways to turn on Shift Lock; you do not need to edit scripts or Studio settings to use the in-experience switch.
